Gamers' Temple, The
Yeah. Patapon is all that and more than deserving of the first perfect score I've ever given in a game review. Patapon's only drawback is that there aren't enough hours in a day to play as much as you'll want to, and we certainly can't blame Sony for that… or can we?

Gaming Age
If it wasn't obvious from the rest of the review, Patapon is a must own PSP title. For under $20, you get what amounts to a huge adventure, and easily one of the most original games of the year - on any platform. Pata-pata-pata-portable perfection.

Patapon is charming, the art style is great, and the soundtrack melds into the gameplay superbly. The patapons themselves are so cute that not only will you want to win the stage but you'll want to keep as many warriors alive as possible. It's not that you can't make more; it's that it's depressing when the cute things die. The whole experience is light-hearted and smile-inducing - particularly the patapons' singing while they work, hunt, and take down giant bosses. If you like rhythm games then picking up Patapon is a no-brainer. Just watch out; once that song is stuck in your head it may never leave.

Patapon is a wonderful experience. It’s a rare novel idea that only comes along so often and shows the potential of the PSP. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you own a PSP and don’t check out the game. Even better, the game is available for a mere $20.
95
JustPressPlay
If you’re tired of shooters and action fests with little personality then give Patapon a try. These little creatures can melt the coldest of hearts and appeal to anybody. This more or less qualifies as a Killer App so if you have a PSP buy it and if you don’t have a PSP then get a PSP.

Play.tm
While the squishy and squashy invention of the PSP's award-winning LocoRoco perhaps comes closest to Patapon in terms of creativity and originality, the genre-straddling ingenuity and intrinsic simplicity of Pyramid/Japan Studios' horrendously addictive rhythm-based, all-action, resource management God game successfully lifts Patapon head and shoulders above most of today's videogames - PSP or otherwise.
93
GameZone
Yes, it is a rhythm-based game, but it is also one of the more engaging and wonderfully unique titles to grace the PSP. It is addictive, it is delightful and it is a lot of fun to play.
92
Cheat Code Central
Patapon is very revolutionary and inventive; it's a one-of-a-kind game no one should miss. Even people who don't usually play RPGs and RTSs will find this game to be a gem. Also, the more than acceptable price point of $20 makes it an unregretful purchase (unless you broke your sister's piggy bank to go buy it!). There isn't much to lose if you decide to jump into the game, except for the terribly catchy army chants, which are tough to get rid of once they stick in your head! Play Patapon, and see by yourself!
92
IGN
While LocoRoco appeared to have the cuteness crown with enjoyable play for the PSP, it looks like it will have to move over – the time for Patapon has come. If you own a PSP, make sure you go to the stores and you get a copy of this game. Your game collection will thank you, and you won't be disappointed.

Game Over Online
Patapon has marched its way onto my list of all-time favorite PSP games. Its simple rhythm based gameplay is complemented brilliantly with elements of strategy and role-playing. It’s fun, vibrant, challenging, charming and rewarding. And the best part, it only costs $20. Now that’s value. Pata-pata-pata-PON!
92
Extreme Gamer
Patapon is true blending of genres creating a unique and special game exclusively on the PSP. The mixture of gameplay elements from strategy action elements to rhythm based music gaming will have your foot tapping as you explore the dangerous lands within Patapon. I could go on forever, praising this achievement of Patapon because it’s nothing short of brilliant. Patapon will surely have you beating the magical drum digging up a one of kind Patapon army, and the best part is that it’s listed at the low price tag of $20. Patapon is must have for anyone looking for a refreshing original game.
92
Jolt (UK)
Patapon is far more than just a unique new mix of genres – it’s just so damn charming it could tell you kill a puppy and you would. Once you’ve seen and heard the game in action, you’ll never be able to get that ‘Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon’ sound out of your head. It’s almost primal the way the game combines beautifully simplistic and stylised visuals and musical beats, and it will dig itself deep into your mind until you don’t want to let it go. It’s as mad as games get, and every bit as enjoyable, unique and rewarding as a game should be.
91
UGO (UnderGroundOnline)
The rhythm-meets-RPG-meets-RTS play style won't be for everybody, but it's surprisingly addictive once you get the hang of it. And we challenge anyone who plays Patapon to walk away without that infectious "Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon" beat stuck in their head.

GamingExcellence
You’ll likely relish every second of this unique and fun adventure, whether your tastes are more Final Fantasy Tactics or Guitar Hero. If you happen to like both, then you are in for a real treat. At only twenty dollars, this is likely the greatest gaming value of the year and one of the best PSP games to date. What are you waiting for? Pon-Pon-Pata-Pon!

Charm and originality waft through the air like the rhythmic beats of its fantastic gameplay - Patapon is as close as you can get to portable pleasure without an 'adults only' rating.

NZGamer
After all, the rewards you reap are entirely worth it and make a big difference to the core game. However, you may not feel the need to go back to the game once you're done, but should you pick it up a few months down the track, the range of game modes would help make it a lasting purchase.

Gameplanet
Quirky, genre-bending titles such as Patapon often don’t get the exposure or acknowledgment they deserve. Rather than simply running with the pack and sticking with tried and true formulas, these tall poppies should be applauded for bravely offering up something truly different for gamers to try. We’re glad we did; Patapon is a true gaming gem and a most worthy addition to your PSP library.
90
Boomtown
It’s heartening to see Sony persistently giving space to titles of this vision and calibre, despite inevitably poor sales figures. While far from faultless, this is one game PSP owners cannot afford to miss, and hopefully one that will capture the hearts and minds of developers for years to come.
90
Gaming Target
However, sometimes their chanting changes ever so slightly (especially when fever mode kicks into gear and new sounds start to emanate), throwing your rhythm off balance and breaking your combo at the worst possible time. Singing the rhythm yourself and tapping it out with your foot when your minions let you down demonstrates how hard it is to be a god and how into this game you can become.
90
Kombo.com
The parallels between LocoRoco and Patapon are present. However, Patapon stands on its own as a completely fresh and exciting experience. With the endearing characters complete with hilarious personality, unforgettable gameplay, depth, style and the all important "X" factor, Patapon only delights.
90
GameSpot
There's never been a game quite like Patapon before. Its combination of light real-time strategy and rhythm is as superb as it is surprising. Anyone with access to a PSP would do well to check it out.
90
Worth Playing
It isn't a flawless game, and the slight focus on grinding up your Patapons and sometimes difficult-to-understand objectives may turn off some gamers, but if you actually find yourself enjoying Patapon, those will be incredibly minor issues. At the surprising budget price of only $20, Patapon is the sort of game that all PSP owners owe it to themselves to at least try.
90
PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
Patapon reminds us that there is still room for originality in gaming. Easily one of the must-have titles on the PSP.
90
Deeko
Overall the game manages to cram all these different game play elements into a single title and makes it work. If you haven't sold off your PSP yet, I strongly advise you to pick this one up, especially for the very respectable price. And if you're not smiling after a few levels of this one, well, then you must be dead inside.
90
TotalPlayStation
The storyline, such as it is, is just interesting enough to keep you going until the RPG-lite elements sink their teeth in. At only $20, the game is positioned to be one of the biggest hits for the PSP this year, and if there's any justice in the world, it'll be one of the biggest sellers on any platform. Go buy it. Now.
90
Project COE
Patapon is an excellent game that’s hard not to recommend. With solid gameplay and hours of entertainment, it’s an amazing value having debuted at a mere $20 asking price. Few console games can compete with that. Not to mention the majority of the levels can be completed in less than ten minutes, making Patapon still relevant as a portable title. The game has so much going for it with style, gameplay, and an excellent value. There isn't anything quite like it on the market. PSP owners should definitely not pass it up.
90
Video Games Daily
On its own, Patapon isn't a 'system seller' or whatever you want to call it these days. But when combined with the fantastic array of other exclusive titles on the PSP it really is. Taking the game as an individual and ignoring the bigger picture though, it is a wonderful game, full of happy happy joy joy from start to finish. If you don't smile at it then you're an idiot, frankly.
90
GamePro (US)
Because making it through all 30 missions, many of them more than once, rests largely in your ability to enter an almost hypnotic state where finger-tap timing and flat-land tactics blend together, not everyone will be taken in by Patapon's unique blend of rhythm-based combat and RPG loot lust. But those who are willing to buy into the game's inherent charms will be rewarded with a memorable gaming experience that will stay with them for a long time to come. Just try and get the catchy "pata-pata-pata-PON!" chant out of your head once you've given this game a try. You won't be able to do it.
90
Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Patapon poses a serious challenge over its 15 hours (some arcane objectives and explanations don't help), but the understated depth, astounding rewards (both literal and whimsical), and elegant difficulty curve stick with you to the end. Along with a beat you'll take to your grave....

UOL Jogos
"Patapon" é daquele tipo de jogo que causa estranhamento no início, mas, quando menos se espera, já dominou a sua mente com visuais encantadores e uma mecânica criativa, que une elementos de jogo musical, RPG e estratégia. Apesar de alguns pequenos lapsos de design, é um dos títulos mais originais e cativantes, de qualquer console, e que com certeza já nasce como obrigatório na coleção do PSP.

PSX Extreme
Patapon marks the beginning of a terrific 2008 for the PlayStation Portable. It is one of the most refreshing titles available for the little unit, and I highly urge everyone to give it a shot. At a mere $20, it won't break anybody's bank, and it'll certainly open your mind up to a world of gaming that you may have never considered before. On top of that, Patapon makes for a terrific handheld title, exactly what you'd want to be playing when you're on a road trip, airplane, or subway. And who knows, perhaps Patapon will emerge as your catalyst for kooky adventure games.

IGN Australia
It's not for everyone; it's a shame that Australians didn't have direct access to the demo that the US market did through some retail chains. Of course, if you like any of the gameplay elements that comprise Patapon, then chances are, the rhythm's gonna get under your skin. Pata-pata-pata-pon!

As a whole, however, Patapon is an experience not to be missed and at $20 there's little excuse to let it pass you by.

Patapon is one of those uniquely fresh titles that will never sell as well as it deserves. If you have a PSP you really should check this entertaining title out.

With any luck, this might be this year's Katamari Damacy-style sleeper hit. I hope so, since Patapon is clearly the superior title of the two.

GBase - The Gamer's Base

Patapon is a great game - one of the best on the PSP. It's an odd fusion of the rhythm and strategy genres, but it all comes together so well that players can't help but to be drawn in and strike the drums over and over...and over.

Retroage

Game Shark
Patapon is a bargain for the price. It’s a fun game that combines many genres into one package and is a great reason to dust off the PSP and start playing again – just make sure you have headphones.
83
Game Revolution
A treat that is as deliciously unique as Rez or Okami comes around once every few years. That one has appeared for the handheld and lasts well over thirty hours is a feat in itself, especially for a $20 budget title. Some of the missions can get monotonous as all you do is drum, and there’s no multiplayer or co-op play. Still, Patapon is like sitting down at an exotic, hole-in-the-wall restaurant and deciding to order an entrée that you can’t pronounce. Then finding it so delicious you end up going back every Saturday until the waiter, the chef, and the patrons roll their eyes and start throwing spears at you. But you don’t care. In fact, you wouldn't have it any other way.
82
Power Unlimited
81
Gamer 2.0
When it comes down to it, Patapon is a great game that is quirky, charming, and addictive at the same time. However, it’s an experience that will attract many gamers by its concept but will probably turn off many others because of the execution and be destined for cult hit status. It definitely doesn’t hurt that the game will only cost you $20 to buy, which is less costly than most PSP games right out of the gate. Demos are available on UMD or from the PlayStation Store to help you get an idea of what to expect while earning an exclusive weapon if you go on to buy the full game.
80
Good Game
It’s not really a kids game, it’s more of a quirky fun title that you’ll probably want to try before you buy. I loved it though, 8/10 from me.
80
80
AceGamez
Patapon is a brilliant game that deserves to be inside your PSP, especially at the price. I would go so far to say that it's one of the best games on the system. The only reason it didn't score higher is because of its ultimately repetitive nature and its lack of a multiplayer mode. I'll wrap this up with a quote from the Patapon themselves (taken slightly out of context); compared to other rhythm games, this will "smack them bottoms". It's a flawed masterpiece, but cheap as chips - so buy it now and thank me later.
80
Gamervision
The cheery music and shiny graphics may be enough to hypnotize you into having a good time and that isn’t really a bad thing. At a price of $20 it is hard for me not to recommend you purchase the title if you own a PSP, just don't expect perfection.
80
Eurogamer.net (UK)
So, to reiterate: while Patapon has got the same quirky sense of style and visual charm as its predecessor, it doesn't offer the same easy breezy gameplay. Instead, it offers an imposing amount of depth and a considerable amount of micromanagement. Which isn't necessarily a criticism - it's just that forewarned is forearmed, and if you're nuts about LocoRoco there's no guarantee that you'll go bonkers for Patapon, because it's complicated, and it can be frustrating. But then it can also be rewarding and yes, it's absolutely charming and that counts for a lot.
80
GameSpy
Patapon is like a cleverly designed trojan horse, built to sucker you in with cute graphics and then beat you down with its primal, rhythmic challenge. It's great fun, but you may find it tough to actually play the game on the go considering the amount of attention it requires.
80
G4 TV: X-Play
Patapon is manna from heaven for PSP owners. There's been a dearth of great games for Sony's portable lately. This is the innovative, exclusive game that many of the devoted have been waiting for. Unlike Loco Roco, the game is tailor made for the hardcore gamer. The only folks who go unnerved are those who balk at a game that looks or sounds too cute. While the superficial furrow their eyebrows because Patapon doesn't seem grown-up enough, the adventurous will enjoy one of the most interesting and infectious role-playing games in ages.
80
The Next Level
Given the sometimes frustratingly difficult missions, when you do down that boss by the slimmest of margins or push those Zigotons out of another area, it feels like a real accomplishment. It’s these moments when Patapon truly excels. Despite its flaws, this twenty dollar title is worth the time and effort. As they say, the beat goes on…PATA PATA PATA PON!
80
RPGFan
If you think the idea of a turn-based rhythm RPG sounds interesting, I'd encourage you to pick up this entertaining game. It is worth noting that playing through the game's demo (available free online) is simply the first few levels of the game, so it will give you a good feel for what Patapon is like. It will also net you a very nice spear for use in the real game when you buy it, and you can even continue playing right from where you left of at the end of demo, rather than having to play those levels over again.
80
GamePlasma
Patapon delivers what you would expect from a rhythm-based RPG title. With vibrant music and artwork, it is impossible to put down at times. However, I feel this title is unfortunately limited to a small demographic of gamers. If you don’t have the time to continually keep up with your patapons and continue through the missions of the Metropolis, then you may not get the full game experience. Patapon is one title, I believe, that will give you the most fun you’ve had with your 20 bucks.
80
Killer Betties
Patapon is a great game and one definitely deserving of a purchase (it's also quite cheap too). As long as you open up your mind to some new gameplay mechanics not seen before, more than likely you'll dig the game just as much as us. Sure, it has some problems, but all-in-all we still recommend the game to any PSP owner. Patapon won't sell systems, but it will round out libraries quite nicely.
80
videogamer.com
After LocoRoco I didn't think I'd see a game that would compete with it for cuteness, but Patapon comes very close. The game as a whole doesn't stand up quite as well as LocoRoco's brilliant simplicity but it's still a wonderfully original experience. It's easy to recommend Patapon to almost anyone with a PSP, especially if you've got a soft spot for catchy little tunes and don't mind annoying everyone around you while you play.
70
The Review Busters
For only $20 you might want to give this game a chance at some point. It takes awhile to get use to the gameplay, but once you get the hang of things you might find a real treasure here. If you do decide to try this game make sure you don’t quit way too fast.
70
Good Game
Infinitely cute with some samey gameplay, and very original. I also liked how the Patapons give you tips if you get stuck, or sometimes just say funny things. 7/10 from me.
70
Bordersdown
Patapon is one of the PSP’s more original and interesting titles of late. The combination of the Patapons themselves, the game’s pleasing visuals and the whole thing being a lot deeper than it first appears, means PSP owners once again have a legitimate reason to switch on their system.
70
Digital Chumps
Rhythm gamers should not miss this unique entry to the PSP's library. Any gamer for that matter will be hard pressed to find a game that employs such unique controls with the slick visuals the powerful PSP handheld can deliver. For the gamer on the go, Patapon is a welcome distraction that just might last after you've gotten home.
70
Video Game Talk
When I first read about this title before it was released, I was a bit hesitant with my enthusiasm. I feared clunky and difficult controlling through the rhythm portion of the game adding to the difficulty. However, upon playing in my very first session, any apprehension was completely removed. The game is solid and even if you struggle at many rhythm games, you will find yourself easily overcoming the learning curve as you drum your Patapon army to victory. You owe it to your PSP to rush out and become one with the Patapon.
65
Destructoid
Long story short -- Patapon is equal parts sunshine and rainclouds, laughter and tears. You'll cuddle it one minute, then batter it to pieces the next. Definitely check it out, but try and borrow before you buy or at least grab the demo. You may very well love it but you may just as easily hate it.
42
The Video Game Critic
Even when you get the basics down however, Patapon isn't particularly enjoyable. The simple button sequences are not hard to memorize individually, but switching between them can be a bit taxing on the cranium. It's especially hard to maintain your rhythm during a battle while you're trying to determine your next move. Patapon has a lot going for it, but fun gameplay is not one of them.
