Tony Hawk’s Project 8 on PSP is a faithful port of the current-generation version. It’s very impressive that Page 44 Studios managed to introduce “nail the trick” and focus mode to the PSP and make it as intuitive as possible. Because this is a port of the PS2 version, the game has the same concessions that version had over the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. If you got tired of skating around in THUG 2 Remix, you’ll definitely want to give Project 8 a whirl.

Despite my issues with the controls, I do commend Activision for making a version of Project 8 that's not a direct port of the home versions. The graphics are about as good as we'll likely get anytime soon on the PSP, and a pretty nice set of songs and the full range of levels are here. With its mostly unique set of challenges and tons of moves and combo lines to discover, the problems I find with Tony Hawk's Project 8 still aren't enough to stop me from recommending it.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the PSP isn't a smashing success due to some awkward controls and limited multiplayer functionality, but it contains enough of an experience that is unique from the console offerings to stand proudly on its own. The streamlined story and solid visuals - almost on-par with the PS2 version - as well as some new twists to the gameplay ("Nail the Trick" mode in particular) make this one a much better choice than THUG 2 Remix. Despite any missteps, Tony Hawk's Project 8 is easily one of the best games available for the PSP (which unfortunately isn't saying much) and should be considered a must-own for fans of the franchise.

In short, if you enjoy games that encourage repeated play, high-score attacking and bonus unlocking galore, then Project 8 will become an obsession. But for all the right reasons.

If you are a huge fan of the Tony Hawk series, you’ll enjoy the game presented in the PSP version of Tony Hawk's Project 8. There are plenty of options to play the game how you want to, and the objectives give a nice variety. The difficulty of the tricks and the length of time it will take to reach the Sick level ensures that there is plenty of longevity with the game. However, the commercialism of the game got old very quickly, and the game still feels a bit stale. Except for the Nail the Trick feature, there isn’t much new to the game. If you aren’t a fan of the Tony Hawk series, Tony Hawk's Project 8 really won’t do anything to turn you into one.

Project 8 is proof that the Tony Hawk series is running out of steam and that’s too bad since there’s some great skating action to be had in this game. Still, even the most faithful fans can’t help but wish there was more to this game than the poorly designed levels and uninspiring objective. Here’s hoping the next one will try something better.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 takes the series back to its roots, and feels like a way to introduce a new generation of gamers to the skating world. While longtime Tony Hawk fans may be initially turned off by the simplified controls, they'll still likely appreciate the nostalgic feel of the game. Plus, the new Nail the Trick feature gives both veterans and beginners a fun new toy to play with. All in all, while Project 8 may not be groundbreaking or revolutionary, it still pulls off the greatest skateboarding trick of all: It keeps things fun.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the PSP isn't as great a game as the console versions. How can it be? It has no real way to resemble the controls without a second analog stick, and the graphics almost feel like an afterthought. Regardless, if the PSP system is all you have, it's a suitable version for on-the-go skating, especially with the multiplayer and Nail the Trick. That should leave some of you spinning around the board in slo-mo for quite some time...until Project 9 eventually comes into play.
