Psychonauts remained in the public's conscience as the game that could have been the one. It was amazingly well received by reviewers, but had lousy sales. Nonetheless, it remains a game that needs to be played, so users must know what to look for in future adventures.

Clocking in at around ten hours, the game is short enough that it keeps the entertainment value throughout. Since players are unlikely to find everything in a single play through, the game also features good replayability. With spot-on controls and side-splitting humor, Psychonauts is an easy recommendation.

There's a contingent in the gaming community that spends a lot of time complaining about a lack of originality in today's titles, or how big franchises and licensed properties have come to dominate the industry in such a way that innovation and eccentricity in design are no longer possible or feasible. If Psychonauts, the latest effort from the creator of Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, does not do well at the cash register, I'm going to track these people down and force them to eat their own shoes. Just as in the aforementioned classics, Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine have given us a game that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but rather puts its own unique spin on the standards of a genre and dresses it up so creatively that it all feels new. Psychonauts is a genuinely fun platformer/adventure that's chock-full of quirky ideas, creative level design and colorful characters, and anyone who's looking for a breath of fresh air in gaming should definitely check it out.

Overall, Psychonauts is just a hair’s breadth from perfection. The only real flaw comes in the form of the difficult to locate figments littering the levels. Everything else was incredible. The gameplay was smooth and responsive, the audio presentation was beyond impressive, and the visuals display a rare artistic value not seen in many games these days. I am willing to go so far and declare Psychonauts as being a strong contender to this years Game of the Year, and do so with great confidence that it can win. Psychonauts is a game all gamers who like having fun should pick up and play.

Despite its minor shortcomings, Psychonauts is a gem of a game, and publisher Majesco's crowning achievement to date. It's unique, fresh, endearing, yet cynical all at the same time. The Xbox doesn't have an abundance of quality platformers in its catalogue, save for Voodoo Vince and a handful of other lesser-known titles. Psychonauts fills that gap nicely and is worth a rental, if not a purchase.

Although the gameplay mechanics stay firmly rooted in the tried-and-true, Psychonauts is really set apart by its narrative and environment. This is a rather bold statement, but I find Psychonauts to be the most fun traditional 3D platform game I have played on the current generation of consoles. This game just exuberates personality and character like I've never seen. If you own a PS2 (or Xbox or PC), you owe it to yourself to play this game.

As if you aren't already getting your shoes on to run to the store and get this game, let me finish you off with a swift kick in the pants: go on and get this game. Between the fun gameplay, the varied and creative environments, the great story, imaginative cast of characters, and, of course, the trademark Schafer sense of humor, there is very little that can go wrong here. Unless, of course, your brain has already been stolen by an evil member of the medical profession. In which case you need to run to the store that much faster.

For two years Voodoo Vince reigned supreme on Xbox as the system’s best action platformer. With its undeniable character, witty dialogue, creative level design and great graphics, Voodoo Vince seemed destined to hold that title on the current Xbox system forever. Then a game called Psychonauts sauntered in. With just as much character, equally witty dialogue and amazing graphics, all it needed to equal my beloved Vince was creative level design. And lo and behold, it blew Vince’s level design out of the water. Don’t worry Vince, I still love you. But Rasputin and his Psychonaut friends are now tops on the Xbox platformer list.

Deep down inside, every gamer enjoys a good platformer. Platforming, to a lesser degree, is a skill used in nearly every action game on the market. You have to jump up on ledges in most every FPS, don’t you? The problem with many platformers is that they are specifically designed around the tiny-tots, which usually leaves the elder gamers yearning for a bit larger challenge. Well stop the presses and prepare for the more mature platformer that you’ve secretly desired for your Xbox. Psychonauts combines adult, Cartoon Network-style animation with a more maturely designed gameplay than most platformers. Is Psychonauts the perfect Xbox platformer? Read on mental marshal, read on…

Psychonauts gehört in jede Spielesammlung.

What truly makes this game so enjoyable is the fact that it is incredibly clever and witty, with a gallery of fantastic (as well as bizarre) characters and some intelligently conceived details (Sounds like Actiontrip.com -Ed.). The level design is superb, and solving puzzles is fun because each one offers a unique experience. While this game may not exactly be a trendsetter, it offers an interesting and coherent story, with a plot that actually makes sense (however insane it may be), and many hours of quality game play. Potential boredom caused by having to run from one game section to another has been eliminated by introducing the underground train and a teleportation system for means of faster transport.

Rather than the simple, carefree summer camp you would expect it to be, Psychonauts is all about developing your abilities to become a psychic warrior. You play as Raz, and your first mission is to complete a basic training course that's located inside the mind of Coach Morrie Oleander. You learn about the basics: figments, emotional baggage, jumping and double-jumping, climbing up ropes and poles, sliding on railings, shimmying, and lastly, how to use your standard attack, the punch. For me, a successful game is one that is both nicely put together and enjoyable, and Psychonauts delivers on both counts.

It's true, some of you will. And some of you platform gamers won't find much in here that hasn't been done before. SLAP! Have we had a Tim Schafer platform game before? Innovation takes on many guises; this isn't this generation's Super Mario 64 in terms of reinvention, but given its comprehensiveness and attention to detail, you might liken its impact on us to that of Yoshi's Island. Except, you know, this is funnier.

Psychonauts made me laugh, shiver, furrow my brow in bafflement, and then laugh some more. I lost hours playing late into the night, eager to get just a little further. Like its psychic protagonist, this game will get into your head in the best possible way.

That creativity is what makes Psychonauts such a great game to play. It's not just the clever level designs, excellent voice acting, or stylized graphics, it's the way everything feeds into everything else, the way the gameplay concepts tie in to Psychonauts' world. Though gameplay is king, all the other story elements support it in ways that enhance the whole experience. Psychonauts is an amazingly fun, funny, head-trip of a game, and shouldn't be missed by anyone with a console to play it on.

Psychonauts is my favorite of its genre in years and years: the genre, of course, being story-driven, puzzle-focused graphical adventures for which its creator, Tim Schafer, is famous. Granted, it might look like a 3D platformer, but then, Deus Ex looked like a first-person shooter when it was really an RPG, and Phantom Dust looks like a melee action game when it's really about cards.

When it was announced that Microsoft Game Studios was ending its publishing agreement with Tim Schafer's Double Fine Productions, Xbox gamers everywhere felt like they were getting robbed. As the man behind the beloved PC titles like LucasArts'Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, Schafer's first game as the head of Double Fine looked like it was going to be one of the freshest, most original titles ever to hit the Xbox. Maybe, gamers thought, the game was overrated, and Microsoft was cutting their losses while they still had time. Once you pop Majesco's Psychonauts into your drive, however, you'll quickly see that Microsoft dropped the ball on this one. It's one of the best platformers the system has seen, mostly thanks to its amazing visuals and downright hilarious dialogue.

I suspect Psychonauts is going to kill on the consoles, and ordinarily I might suggest you buy a console version, especially if you don’t have a gamepad for your PC—in general, games like this simply play better on a console. But I’m not going to suggest that. Psychonauts is, for once, a well-done PC platformer— so well done and so very good looking, it’s worth buying a gamepad for it.

None of those minor issues, however, should dissuade anyone from running out and purchasing a copy of Psychonauts. In a world where one of the most common gamer laments is there's no originality in gaming anymore, Psychonauts is an incredibly enjoyable breath of fresh air. That's par for the course for Tim Schafer, though. I just hope this game doesn't meet the commercial fate of too many of his previous ones. He deserves better -- and gamers deserve more titles like Psychonauts.

Do dreams come true? At this stage in my life I'd say yes, but I'll have to get back to you in 20 years to give a final answer. For Raz, a troubled boy with psychic powers, dreams are not necessarily what he hopes will come true. His home life is really messed up. Damaged by a curse, his living family lives in fear, hoping the curse isn't real, hoping that it dies a myth.

Psychonauts is a quirky, offbeat game set in a special summer camp for clairvoyant kids, in which a group of psychic children end up in a wacky adventure filled with brain-stealing hijinks, psychic secret agents, and a little romance on top of everything else. It's rooted in the sorts of 3D platforming sensibilities we've all come to know over the years. But there's a spin to the game--its psychic theme--which adds some cool puzzle-solving to the usual platform-jumping and swinging associated with the genre. Psychonauts also bears the unmistakable mark of designer Tim Schafer (known for classic adventure games Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and Day of the Tentacle), thanks to a hilarious array of peculiar characters and a story that never fails to entertain. Psychonauts doesn't reinvent the platformer, but it still delivers an experience that feels wholly original in every aspect of its execution.

Still, those that stick with the adventure will be rewarded. As Raz learns new mental powers like telekinesis and clairvoyance, the traditional platforming controls open up to reveal deeper and more novel gameplay. I can tell you this: I was always motivated to continue my travels in the twisted world of Psychonauts, if only to see what bizarre sights I would witness next. Few titles have ever inspired in me this genuine sense of discovery.

Tim Schafer has a loyal legion of fanboys for good reason. The creator of PC classics Full Throttle and Grim Fandango is one of the most innovative game designers in the industry. Previously, Schafer worked at LucasArts, but left the company a half-decade ago to start his own company, Double Fine Productions. After a long journey that involved multiple publishers and a slow development process, Psychonauts has finally landed on story shelves.

It also helps that the game has more to it than just a lot of jumping around. There are puzzles to be solved in Psychonauts, as well as battles to be fought, and both require use of Raz's list of crazy psychic powers. You start out only with a basic melee attack at your disposal, but as you play and collect items scattered about both the real world and mental worlds, you'll be able to upgrade Raz's rank and earn new powers, like telekinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation, invisibility, and clairvoyance. The best part is that there will be crazy situations constantly thrown at you where you'll have to change your powers regularly (as you can only have three assigned at one time).

Schafer and his team spent a characteristic amount of time and imagination on Psychonauts and it seems a bit rude not to reciprocate by spending a decent amount of time in their character’s imaginations. It’s a confused beast of a game: one second it’ll recklessly smash through the boundaries of the avant-garde, and the next it will apologise, dust off its “I Love Rules and Regulations” hat, and rigidly, blindly adhere to all the conventions of the genre whether they make sense or not. It ain’t perfect, but bugger me if it’s not trying. Gleefully, my extensive vocabulary gleaned from my Bourgeois book learning means I can sum up Psychonauts in one handy, bite size adjective: “Oftensurprisinggenerallymessyfrequentlyhilariousbutstubbornlybloodyexasperating.”

This is one can't-miss adventure. Psychonauts isn't perfect by any means (and, to be honest, even less so on PS2), but the gameplay flaws are mad up for the quality writing, great level design, and the undeniably unique experience. Between Xbox and PS2, the Sony version has more aggravating instances of the main tech problems I had on the earlier release - load times, depth perception issues, and jaggies being the most grating. Still well worth playing on PS2, but if you have a choice, go Xbox.

If the PS2 iteration will be your only opportunity to play Psychonauts, you owe it to yourself to experience this hilarious and charming adventure; despite visual issues, it's still an unforgettable game.

So, what do you want from a computer game? If you want to enjoy unusual environments, bounce around collecting figments of someone's imagination, and discover who is turning your fellow campmates into brainless morons, this is the game for you. If you want a sci-fi epic or role-playing experience, this may be a bit further from your tastes. Still, you should give it a try, as Psychonauts is an excellent platformer and one of the best games released during its year. It's just a shame it didn't arrive on the Mac sooner.

Psychonauts is a game that will probably come and go without much fanfare unfortunately. People are crying out for new styles of gameplay, which Psychonauts delivers, but we have a feeling that even if we tell you to go out and buy or at least try, most people will find themselves tempted by a more mainstream title, which is a shame.

"Psychonauts" is a game that offers a different style of adventure and puzzle while combining it with platforms. The game is not for kids-only and is more matured then you would expect. The twisted style of humour is extraordinary and you'll certainly have some laughs when playing. Not as loud like 'Grim Fandango' but still "good enough". 'Psychonauts' surprised me in the long run and I must say, it's either a game you'll like ... or just hate. But I and the whole PlayDevil crew had a blast when playing so I guess you'll too! Now waiting on Tims' new project!

Each year, there are a few games so off-the-wall and quirky that they make their own success, thanks to unique gameplay and word-of-mouth kudos from fans. Last year, Namco's Katamari Damacy was probably at the head of the pack. Though it's still relatively early in 2005, we may already have a winner in the wacky-game race: Majesco's Psychonauts.

Our giddy love of Psychonauts probably says as much about the dreadfully po-faced nature of most videogames as it does about the relative merits of Double Fine's cult classic. It's hard to think of too many other games that have ever inspired such heart-warming bursts of pure fun merely from the quality of the writing alone. It's as if critics the world over exploded in a righteous froth at the undiluted joy of being released from the harrowing shackles of reviewing intolerably beardy World War II/Sci-fi/stealth/D&D epics and actually allowed to play something that made them laugh. When you spend most of the year with a knitted brow saving the world from insane megalomaniacs, the chance to, um, save the world from an insanely funny megalomaniac has a disproportionate allure. Especially once you realise that 'Sir' Tim Schafer's one of the men behind it.

I first heard about Psychonauts a few years ago, and at first it was just the title. I imagined a futuristic sci-fi shooter with robots, jet packs, lasers and various icky aliens. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a comedic platformer starring a goggled hero named Rasputin.

Although it features some fairly standard platforming action, there haven't been many games that can match Psychonauts' originality. The team at Double Fine has managed to seamlessly combine sumptuous, mind-bending visuals and a downright funny script to create one of the most inventive games to hit the PS2. It doesn't quite measure up to the Xbox version due to the framerate and texture issues, but this isn't one of those games that's all about graphics. It's about having fun, and Psychonauts delivers on all fronts.

Also ideal für mich.

Psychonauts can be funny, quirky, and fun. It does not, however, come far enough away from its console roots to be considered a good PC game. Plus, the subject matter and the characters in the game seem to be aimed much lower than its Teen rating.

Hilarious and utterly charming in turns, this cult adventure is still well worth exploring—though some hang-ups muddle the experience a bit.

The clash of style and content might make the game appear slightly schizophrenic, certainly -the mature and twisted style of humour not being something you'd normally associate with the platform adventure genre - but the fact is, Psychonauts works. It's not revolutionary by any means, nor is it particularly long, but thanks to some clever creative control the game delivers a funny, engrossing and downright weird experience unlike most other platform adventures. A game hasn't made us laugh out so loud for a long time; so long, in fact, we'd forgotten what it felt like. Thanks, Double Fine.

Psychonauts must be credited for the craftsmanship and style that have gone into its audio visual presentation and the many little details that have been painted into its wacky world. Yet, the gameplay is a mixed bag of up and down moments. It never truly shines and is bogged down by overdrawn cinematics.
