With rewards such as an extra turn for linking four or five gems together or the warm feeling of doing double damage to your enemy because of a well-planned chain incorporating themselves into the tactical side of a game like Bejeweled, players will find themselves playing to master the game as best as they can -and that's not a bad thing. Before you know it, you'll be playing Puzzle Quest in your sleep.

This title does have a few elements that are unpolished. Those looking for intriguing dialogue or an original story will be disappointed, but the one that's there does provide enough framework to have it make sense. The game's four classes beg for four save slots, and the two available are somewhat limiting. The sound is repetitive, and the AI seems to almost always make the right moves.

Alas, what keeps Puzzle Quest from being a nearly perfect game for the PSP version are a couple of pretty bad bugs. One keeps you from benefiting from the buffs that traveling companions are supposed to bestow on your character; and another blocks you from accessing certain spells that you learn from enemies. It’s a shame for any of the richness of this game experience to be compromised, but neither bug is a show-stopper.

The story feature is unusual but welcome in a genre with limited opportunities to enjoy dialogue or interesting art. If all puzzle games could move more in this direction and RPGs could become more a bit more cerebral, we'd be all set. Until that day, just go get a copy of Puzzle Quest and enjoy yourself.

Even though Puzzle Quest hits every technical aspect out of the park, it won’t appeal to everyone as the RPG elements might be too heavy. Still, Puzzle Quest gives a huge shot in the arm for the puzzle genre and I’m looking forward to seeing what is in store next for this franchise.

Puzzle Quest is now my personal favorite puzzle game of all time. It takes the idea of Bejewled and increased the amplitude by making it a battle between gamers and AI then throwing in all the trimmings of a RPG. The innovation in Puzzle Quest is second to none, any doubts need to be put to rest. I want to know how this game escaped my radar for so long because it is a classic game that will be remembered.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a great puzzle and RPG game that successfully combines the two genres to create a fun and challenging game. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is so far possibly the biggest surprise of 2007. Based on its uniqueness alone, it would be outrageous for this game to be overlooked as best puzzle game of the year. If it were up to me, I'd even put it in the running for best DS game of the year. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is an original, fun and incredibly addicting adventure that should not be missed by any DS owner.

If you're one of those gamers who didn't pick the game up on one of the two portable systems earlier in the year, then this Xbox Live Arcade version is a must-buy. And I'll be honest with you, even if you do already own the game on the DS or the PSP, this still may be worth it for the achievement points and online multiplayer. Either way, this is easily one of the best puzzle games of all time, and (at least for the time being) my favorite game of the year.

Throw in a nice selection of Achievements for you Gamerscore junkies, and you have a nice little package, very attractive for the price. Alternatively, you can take a look at the portable versions on both PSP and DS, or the console versions on the Wii and the PS2. Definitely worth a look for all.

You can repeat certain side quests for added experience, which turned out quite handy when I found myself feeling a bit outclassed approaching a main quest battle - just went back and spent time repeating a lucrative mission until I'd leveled up a couple of times and was ready to keep going with the story. And that is the beauty of Puzzle Quest - it keeps solid puzzle action in your face at all times yet never lets you forget that it is a deep and engaging role-playing game.

Nintendo DSGamers' Temple, The
About the only true negative aspect of the game is the touchpad sensitivity, as the game has a nasty habit of occasionally missing your taps by a jewel. This is promptly followed by an “illegal move” message and the loss of your turn, which is often enough to turn the tide of battle against you.
90
Nintendo DSGamerDad
Unfortunately, since the battle mode has the player taking turns with an opponent, true puzzle purists may become frustrated as the game is then less controlled than one without an opponent. It is much harder to set-up long matching chains, as a good setup will typically be preempted by one's opponent. Despite this minor "purist" drawback, the rest of the game shines and is perfect for almost any age or demeanor.

Above all, strategy fans should particularly enjoy the many ways that Puzzle Quest makes you think about the complex interactions among your character, the opponent, and the puzzle board. Ironically, the only audience who may be lost in this adventure is the casual sector, i.e. the very people who turn off their brains for hours to play the original Bejeweled. For anyone else, I can't recommend Puzzle Quest highly enough. It's a refreshing blend of genres, perfectly suited for handheld play, and almost impossible to put down.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords ist ein wunderbares Spiel.

While 1200 points seems like a hefty price for an Xbox Live Arcade release, this is actually the cheapest version (PC, DS, PSP) of Puzzle Quest: CotW in existence. The single player campaign is challenging, interesting, and provides a bevy of choices to modify your playstyle. While the multiplayer doesn’t offer a huge amount of replay value, it does offer an occasional breath of life when you revisit this title from time to time. If you are a fan of classic role playing games and puzzles, you shouldn’t have any second thoughts about snatching up Puzzle Quest: CotW. It’s the deepest arcade title currently on Xbox Live and will surely offer hours upon hours of entertainment for all that purchase it.

Puzzle Quest may very well be one of the best games on Xbox Live arcade. It is both highly accessible and truly addictive. Leveling up your character is rewarding, and the story, while somewhat thin, poses just enough motivation to continue on. But the real draw is the character development. Getting stronger through combat or by getting a new weapon is just a lot of fun, and taking your leveled character online can often be a blast. If you like puzzle games, then you should definitely check out Puzzle Quest. It is a puzzle game with a purpose, and that small detail helps make it one of the best of the genre.

Puzzle Quest is one of the most original handheld games to come out for quite some time. It's the perfect combination of the RPG and puzzle genres that fans of both will find incredibly addicting. The aesthetics may be somewhat limited but there is enough personality and creativity put into the game to keep you playing through many battery recharges. The PSP needs more titles like this and quite honestly I think this is the most "fun" I have ever had with the system.

Spruced up from the PSP and offered for 10 quid, it's probably the best release on Microsoft's clever little service all year. Buy it, and wish you had thought of it first. And wish for another one where they come up with even more brilliant ideas.

The appeal of Puzzle Quest for fans of either RPGs or puzzle games is quite obvious, but what's most remarkable about Puzzle Quest is how a simple change of context turns some tired genre conventions into something suitable for just about anyone, regardless of your interest in the components. Despite coming out on XBLA a good half a year after the original DS and PSP releases, Puzzle Quest still feels incredibly fresh and vital, and the changes made in between make it even easier to recommend.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is easily one of the strongest single-player games of the year. It's the type of game that almost anybody can get into, and best of all you can play the entire game with only one hand. If you set out to complete every mission and max out your characters skills, then chances are you'll be involved with this game for hundreds of hours. And even after you've seen and done everything, you'll want to go back and do it all over again ... the game is that addictive. It may have a silly name, but Puzzle Quest is one of those games that everybody should own. Even if you're not into puzzlers or role-playing games, this is definitely one game you can't let slip by.

Both versions of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords come highly recommended, and even in light of the annoying bugs, the PSP version is the better choice and deserving of our Editor's Choice recommendation. Mind you, this impression hinges on a comparison across the two versions of the game. If you only have a Nintendo DS, then you'll find that the game still functions quite well and is plenty of fun. It's not nearly as visually attractive, however, and the interface issues we encountered were a common annoyance. Regardless of which handheld you prefer, make sure to buy this game and recommend it to your friends. It also can't hurt to hope for a sequel with online multiplayer support. Just remember to stop leveling once in a while to get some sleep. After a few more sleepless nights, maybe I'll be able to take my own advice.

Puzzle Quest certainly caught us by surprise. Initially, it seemed like this marriage of RPG-inspired stat management and casual puzzle gaming was doomed to failure. However, Puzzle Quest managed to combine the best aspects of both genres into one nice little package. We went into this game expecting very little, and came away with a whole lot. Puzzle Quest's addictive mixture of role-playing stat progression, and casual gem-matching has resulted in one of the most captivating PSP games this year. The graphical and aural enhancements in the PSP version make it the definitive version of a game that is quickly becoming one of our handheld favorites.

The game isn't pretty and can be frustrating when the A.I. decides there's no bleeping way you're winning a fight, but an addictive battle system and surprisingly in-depth RPG elements will keep most players interested for a long time.

Puzzle Quest was a pleasant surprise when it was released on handhelds earlier this year, and the PC version continues its tradition of excellence. The unlikely marriage of puzzle gameplay with RPG mechanics makes for one of the most addictive experiences available to gamers today. In general I think Puzzle Quest is a puzzle game that should appeal to both RPG and puzzle fans. The game might not have enough role playing aspects to compare it to any of the Final Fantasy games, but that might have been for the best. For what the game costs, $19.99 or less, it is well worth every dime. Pick up Puzzle Quest if you can, but maybe place this title in moderations so you don't dislike it way too fast.

Barring head-scratching omissions in multiplayer and slightly iffy touch control, Puzzle Quest does a great job at taking a free game and adding enough content to make it worthwhile.

Vorsicht: Suchtgarantie!

Puzzle Quest is a very unique and refreshing take on both puzzle games and RPGs. It successfully fuses the two with plenty of strategic options on both the world map and the combat screen. The story won't win any awards, but you can always skip it and just get right to the meat of the game. The controls in the DS version are frustrating in some situations, but the graphics are plenty good compared to other games on Nintendo's handheld. Wi-fi play is included, but it's only local, which is a bit of a disappointment. Still, with its great puzzle elements, this is one of the most original RPGs to be released on the DS (or on any platform, really) and I can heartily recommend it to fans of both genres.

Still it’s all in good fun, and it’s interesting to see other peoples’ strategies and compare them to your own. For either system, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a portable addiction, and while I recommend the PSP version, the DS game is almost as good. Besides, it’s not about the graphics, right? In my life, I never thought I’d end up playing this much Bejeweled. I guess that makes me a dork.

The appeal of Puzzle Quest for fans of either RPGs or puzzle games is quite obvious, as it does a great job of scratching two distinctly different types of itches simultaneously. What's most remarkable about Puzzle Quest, though, is how a simple change of context turns some tired genre conventions that have been done to death into something that's suitable for just about anyone, regardless of your interest in the components.

While Puzzle Quest HD is not a new game, and provides nothing new to veterans of the original game in the series (although the 3rd chapter of the game, which was DLC on other platforms, is included here), for newbies to the franchise, this is a great way to get acquainted with one of the best puzzle game adaptations of the last few years. If you haven’t played the game yet, and want an ingenious twist on the traditional puzzle game design, Puzzle Quest HD is well worth checking out.

Puzzle Quest bridges the gap between pick-up-and-play casual games and deeper turn-based strategy and RPG titles. And it succeeds in both areas, pushing the “just one more game” factor to new levels.

Puzzle Quest PSP does exactly what it sets out to do, masterfully combining the role-playing and puzzle genres into one game that is perfect for handheld gaming. Whilst other publishers continue to use the PSP as a home for inferior PS2 ports or graphical showpieces, D3 understands what works on the portable market and has delivered a deceptively simple game for all occasions, something that all PSP owners should be very thankful for.

In conclusion, Puzzle Quest is a seemingly horrible idea with an awful marketing campaign that is fun to play. It's right for everyone (well, not FPS enthusiasts) on some level, be it the RPG elements, Bejewled casual gameplay, or strategy. I've decided that my reviews shouldn't have scores or even letter grades given the recent controversy over them, so I'll stick with an Ebert & Roeper style recommendation. Thumbs up, I suppose.

Puzzle Quest blends the best parts of two genres that couldn't be more different into a single well balanced and incredibly fun game. It doesn't matter if you either don't like RPGs or don't like puzzle games, there's a good chance you'll like Puzzle Quest anyway. But particularly if you enjoy both genres, there's no excuse for you not to play this game.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is an addictive, entertaining affair that takes a little bit of patience and learning to get down the basics. Once learned, however, you'll be hooked in no time flat and unwilling to turn a cold shoulder to it. Even with the notion of fighting creatures in puzzle combat sounding as silly as it is, you won't get enough of it. Trust us, kids. There’s nothing more admirable than a game that’s well polished and carefully designed, but by the same account there’s nothing more amazing than a game that’s enthralling to play despite being pretty broken. Puzzle Quest for the DS is a fantastic example of blending and merging genres. It’s a rarity to see it done so well, without one side overpowering the other. Puzzle Quest has a lot of longevity in its game play, giving it a ton of replay value. The aim of this unique game is to provide purpose to the otherwise monotonous experience of stringing together three similar icons to make them disappear, over and over again, puzzle after puzzle. And while it takes a bit of imagination to get used to the idea of puzzles supplanting battles, the role-playing shtick does provide a kind of contextual framework and grander objective to puzzle-solving that's missing from just about every other game in the genre. You'll likely find yourself propelled from one puzzle to the next not just because the puzzles are fun (which they are), but also because you feel that recognizable RPG itch to keep playing just a little longer until you level up your character one more time. And it's a good thing that added incentive exists; Puzzle Quest offers dozens of hours worth of puzzle-solving, which, even with a moderately engaging story to help drive things along, can make things a bit repetitive.

The PlayStation 2 version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords comes highly recommended, even if it's not the most attractive version available. The Xbox Live version, and even the PSP version with its annoying bugs are better looking versions of the same game, but you can't lose with any choice you make. But in the end, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a fun, fulfilling and yes, even addictive game. Better yet, at only $20, you'll definitely get your money's worth; with 150 different quests and an opportunity to endlessly repeat many of them, the play time is almost limitless. Granted, there are a few issues, but many of them are mostly subjective and the simple bottom line is that it's a nicely constructed gameplay format. The blending of RPG and puzzle elements might seem a little strange at first, but the two come together surprisingly well, and you never feel as if you're playing some ridiculous hybrid that doesn't make any sense. This one might be a little too straightforward when it comes to the actual puzzle part, but that's okay. It's fun. It's not flashy and it's not perfect, but it's fun. And in the end, isn't that what really matters?

Originally released in early 2007 on the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS, Puzzle Quest was a revelation. By taking some of the most compelling properties of puzzle and role-playing games, Infinite Interactive created something that was more than the sum of its parts. It's an RPG that can be played in short bursts, as well as a puzzle game that begs to be played in long stretches. Puzzle Quest is now available on the PlayStation 2, and though the screen layout makes the playfield smaller than would be ideal, the excellent gameplay remains undaunted.

All-in-all, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords provides an experience that despite its hybrid nature is surprising enjoyable, engaging and lengthy, if overly difficult at times. Fortunately it's something that - a few hissy tantrums and the odd parking ticket aside - the average grown-up will be able to cope with, and there's little else to stop us recommending Puzzle Quest. As to which version, the PSP is the better-looking, but reportedly suffers from a trifling bug that renders your quest companions' skills useless, so you might prefer to play it on the DS, where it looks slightly less exciting, but does offer stylus controls, which mostly work fine. Whichever you opt for, we reckon the score below fits. If you disagree, perhaps we'll see you at the usual time and the usual place, but do remember to bring Puzzle Quest, because it has excellent local wireless multiplayer, and we're out of rubber bands to flick at you.

Puzzle Quest has been one of the pleasant surprises of 2007. The unlikely marriage of puzzle gameplay with RPG mechanics makes for one of the most addictive experiences of the year. On its journey to the PS2, though, Infinite Interactive made some terrible design choices that hinder enjoyment of the game. If you haven't played Puzzle Quest, yet, this is still worth a look. It comes with a seemingly endless set of quests, different classes to try, and spells to master. The coupling of casual and hardcore gameplay is a marriage that will last -- they just had a really ugly baby.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a really engaging puzzle/RPG hybrid that is unfortunately brought down from the accolades it deserves with really unnecessary appropriateness issues. If the Medusa was not in this game, I probably would have recommended it to anyone who does not mind the fantasy setting or the mythical gods or other references and wants a great puzzle game. Instead, I am forced to not recommend it.. which is a real shame.

Puzzle Quest had the potential to be a dominant title--merging two genres in a way no one had thought of before. Combining overly addictive puzzle solving with a sense of progression and accomplishment makes for a powerful experience. The role-playing elements are relatively well done, even though they fall into the same potholes of repetition that have plagued the genre for twenty years. All in all, the game manages to provide something different and wholly entertaining - even though it's nothing revolutionary, the blending of standard RPG and puzzle elements does make for an end product whose sum is greater than the value of its halves.

Sure, its story and aesthetics are so hackneyed and earnest that they make you feel like the developers were joking when they conceived them, yet there's still something engrossing about Puzzle Quest. The minute-to-minute gameplay is tried and true, and when you factor in the long-tailed character progression, well, let's just say it's a wrap. Puzzle Quest's designers are certainly onto something here.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords has become a cult favorite since it was released on handhelds earlier this year. A deep, addictive experience, it lent legitimacy to casual games like Bejewelled that so-called "hardcore gamers" often ignore. After the game's quick success, console ports were announced for just about every platform under the sun. Puzzle Quest has arrived on the Wii, but the developers have made several detrimental changes to its design. The addictive gameplay is still here, but this port is not easy on the eyes.

Originally debuting in early 2007 on the handheld platforms, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a refreshingly original mash-up that blends multiple, disparate genres beautifully. It combines the simple-to-learn yet difficult-to-master gameplay mechanics of Bejeweled with the remarkably deep character customization and Tolkienesque aesthetics of a high fantasy role-playing game, while also drawing upon the exploration and management aspects of classic turn-based strategy gaming. The result is a gaming experience unlike any other available today, and one that you absolutely shouldn't miss.

In my opinion, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is the best puzzle game of this past year. It’s fun and dangerously addictive. If you’re a fan of puzzle or role-playing games, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Having been said, the Wii is the weakest of all versions of the game. It also happens to be the most expensive. Go figure. If you can play this game on any other system, particularly the PC, Xbox Live Arcade or PS2, I would recommend you do just that. If those aren’t options for you, I suppose the Wii will do.

In theory, it’s the perfect game, but its bugs, flaws, frustration, and repetition detract from its fun factor to the point where Puzzle Quest really can't be considered much more than average. Paradoxically, the game is horribly addicting yet horribly frustrating at the same time; it's impossible to put down but often infuriating to play. The idea is amazing, though, and here's hoping that more developers will take after Puzzle Quest's example and learn from its mistakes in order to usher in a new genre of "Puzzle-RPGs."

For what it is, Puzzle Quest is mildly addictive, with a fairly long, albeit mildly boring quest. This game is worth looking into as a diversion, but anybody expecting anything more out of this will be let down; puzzle fans should look into Meteos or its Disney-flavored sequel instead.

Being unlike anything else on the market, Puzzle Quest is a groundbreaking game. Looking past the problems, the blending of puzzle games into an RPG works really well and offers a great deal to build off of in the future. The gameplay is fun, the controls are decent, and while the story could use some work, the game is still fun. With this much already there as a foundation to work with, there is much hope for this new genre blend to grow further. So, while Puzzle Quest wasn't a perfect start for this new game type, the addictiveness of Puzzle Quest does forecast a pleasant outlook for similar games.

All games are going to have repetition in them. A good game is one that can divert the effects of its repetition and give players a way to minimize the time they spend repeating the same motions. In the end, Puzzle Quest is crushed by its own tedium and repetition. While it has a fun system and passable story, it also has irritating glitches and poor or incomplete elements that make this game feel like an unfinished product. It’s an interesting cross-genre experiment, and can be addictive and fun, but fails to live up to the great potential that it has.

If you’ve played the game in any of its other iterations, be advised to stay away from this title. Sure you may think it would be fun to play it on the big TV instead of your DS or PC, but the carpel tunnel inducing controls will make you wish for your thankfully discounted price back. If you have the means to play this in one of its other forms, I highly recommend this title as a good pick up and play game – but just not on the Wii. Skip it.
