Quake II completists should not miss out though. Ground Zero comes highly recommended to those capable of fighting their way through the game without cheating. It may be rock hard, and in danger of eclipse from newer arrivals, but it is not to be dismissed without trial.

My final verdict, Quake II: Ground Zero is not that bad. Rogue did a pretty good job of freshening things up. Now don't expect Quake II to be reinvented, because that doesn't happen. But the new multiplayer elements and maps are cool. And the new weapons and levels keep me happy. Jeez man I almost forgot about the computer AI it is really good. Enemies are able to jump, climb, and stalk you. I found this to be really cool, and added to value of Ground Zero.

Quake II is a year old, but the new weapons and power-ups make the game interesting again. The two boss monsters are also very nice (I won't ruin them for you), as are the new monsters and enhanced AI. I don't think the single-player experience will be that compelling once Half-Life and Sin release next month, but in the meantime, you could do worse than play Ground Zero, especially with its numerous new multiplayer maps. Rogue did a good job on the mission pack, and as long as you action fans realize that this is just an expansion pack, and not a new game, you won't be disappointed.

It pretty much goes without saying, but if you just can't get enough Quake II, Ground Zero is a more than satisfying holdover. If you are looking for a brand new experience in the first-person shooter genre, than you're going to have to look elsewhere for now.

I finished this mission pack but at about the 6th level I couldn't wait for it to end. It is better than the first Mission Pack, but it is still severely limited. I wouldn't even call this addon difficult. On the normal difficulty level, I zipped through the whole game in about 4 hours and only died maybe 3 times. After playing so many Quake 2 games against real human opponents on the Internet, it was a breeze strafing around and blasting the snot out of the unwitting Q2 monsters. They are veritable morons, with just enough AI to shoot a gun at something that moves. As far as the new weapons go, none of them really impressed me with innovation.

In the end, Ground Zero simply should have offered more-more variety, and less-less of the same Quake II art and architecture we've seen for nearly a year now. More "replaced" weapons and more imaginative and different weapons and powerups. Most importantly, they should have made some strides to provide a single-player experience that was better than that of Quake II.

Look, I'll make this one simple. This was a missed opportunity. Perhaps if Rouge had shown a bit more creativity and done something cool with the Quake 2 engine (like the Malice TC for Quake) then this could have been cool. It could have been less terminally boring than Quake 2. As it is, this 104 megabyte puppy didn't stay on my hard drive for very long and I got it for free. Don't bother paying any of your hard earned/scammed/stolen cash on this one, there ain't enough meat to nuke.
