I keep hearing that NIN produced the music for Quake I.
I've never heard music on Quake 1. What music are people talking about? Well, according to the DOS credits, yes, Trent Reznor was responsible for the music in Quake. That's interesting, I never heard of that before. "MobyGames, learn something new everyday"...
As far as I know, the music was stored on the CD as audio tracks. Therefore, you need to play with the disc in the drive to hear the music. I have played Quake with music, but hat was ages ago ... So, it's just a guess on my side.
Yeah, it has Redbook Audio as a tech-spec. Also, Last.fm has 30" previews for the songs in the soundtrack CD to anyone who wants to listen.
Nice. I always remember how unusual it felt with the games' music in RedBook format. You hear a very crappy voiceover and then a crystal clear music would start. That was a pretty neat effect. It's a shame, that Reznor left the Doom 3 production. The game was released with no music at all as a result. ![]() St. Martyne Wrote:

Tomb Raider, and StarCraft did it best. ![]() Pseudo_Intellectual Wrote: To tell the truth, I never played Quake seriously (and by that I mean more than 2 stages). This is one of those games I should post about on those "classics you've never played" threads we have here. I remember it being a dark and boring shooter. But it seems OK, since it came out more or less at the same time as Duke3D, which I played a whole lot back in the day. Yes, the music is only on CD releases as Redbook tracks. Most recently sold copies of the game are downloads which don't have them, and the game doesn't require the CD to run, so people who pirated the game probably never heard the music. It's basically ambient music, not in NIN's usual style (at least not what I know of NIN). Together with Quake's drab color palette, it makes for a really interesting atmosphere. I was always a bit confused as to how Quake's soundtrack could be called 'music' - It was composed by Reznor but it's just ambient tracks (apart from the short music track on the main menu, IIRC). Gotta say, Chirinea, I agree with you: I was a big DOOM fan but never really got into Quake - It was okay for deathmatches but the single-player was very dull. Some kick-ass music tracks might've helped ;)

If you own the original CDs, you can rip the audio and use a source port to play the games with the music playing in the background. :) I think a lot of people was disappointed because they expected some kind of NIN-style industrial rock soundtrack. But I like the tracks, gives the game a nice atmosphere, but usually I put on Fat of the Land by The Prodigy instead.
