I truly wish everyone could have had the same experience that I had with the game, and how it really did change my life. I played this game more than any game past or present. Many newbies might call me 86 and outdated, but so be it. Just remember youngin's, when you play your fancy new FPS, you would never have it without the birth of Quake.

If Quake were a painting, it would be the Mona Lisa. If it were a car, it would be a Rolls-Royce. Or, to put it in the terms of modern parlance, Quake rocks!

Will it have the same impact Doom had? Nope: its impact will be greater, influencing every future online and multiplayer game. With lord knows how many Quake servers spawning across the globe, all linked in a web of death and mayhem, this game should stay in the public's eye for years to come.

Doom is for duellists, grudge matches, head-to-head. Quake is not. Quake is a multi-player game. Just when you hit Doom's four-player ceiling, Quake kicks in. Five-player is gory, seven-player is frantic. Ten-player becomes a massacre. Twelve-player is insane. Sixteen-player is beyond anything you'll ever play in the whole wide world. Quake is about wading in. Quake is about kicking arse, and kicking arse, over and over again until some-body blows your leg off. Quake is about dousing the level in pineapples. About farting about in low gravity, pummelling orbiting players with rockets. It's about fighting your way to the quad power, getting it, and then being immediately shot.

The arrival of Quake is a real bonus for the Amiga. It is the most technically advanced game the platform has ever seen, and it has an enormous amount to offer the player. Some people will complain that the system requirements are too high, but on the highest spec machine available – Zorro 3 graphics card and 66 Mhz '060 – it runs very nicely, and that is the power tha PC owners had to upgrade from, not to, to play Quake. Quake is a jaw dropping game. It is utterly engrossing and enormous in extent, thanks in large part to the range of add ons. Quake totally dominated the PC games world from the day it was released to the day Quake 2 was released, and it deserved to. Nintendo 64 and Playstation owners are howling for this game, but we've got it first and we also have the Internet and QuakeC facilities the console versions can't touch. Quake is the king of games – buy it.

Oh boy. All we’ve ever had are clones on the Amiga - Testament, Nemac IV and a handful of the others have been good games in their own rights but it’s obvious they’re Doom clones. Good Doom clones though, because although they look pretty shoddy in parts (some of the monsters in Testament are very 1988), they were great fun to actually play. But for one, and possibly the biggest genre, the day of making do with clones are over. Make way for Quake. The heavy metallic clang, clang, clang of a grenade bouncing before exploding in a shower of light and destructive energy is a marvellous thing and something that’s hard to grow weary of. You’ll experience this many times in Quake as you fight your way through the many levels of the game’s three episodes.

Much more could be said of Quake, but I'll leave the rest for you to discover. The hype surounding this game has been almost unbearable, but in the end, Quake deserves every bit of advance - and until now, unverifiable - praise it has received. If you're into action games, and even if you're not, you should be playing Quake right now - it's as good as PC gaming gets.

Quake is fun. Quake is cool. Quake is the best game of its type I have ever seen. Quake won't let me sleep at night. However, Quake could be better. As I played it, I couldn't help but think, 'Wow, imagine what this place will look like when they are done!' With all its gee-whiz features and kick-butt style, Quake is still, in my opinion, a work in progress. Quake is more than the Doom III that some people have labeled it to be. However, it is also not the leap ahead that Doom was to Castle Wolfenstein. It just promises that there will be such a leap.

Quake is not just another 3D shoot-em-up game. It's a whole new level of gaming. The amazing performance and features of Quake are the future of gaming. Whether you are new to this type of game or you are an old Doom hack, you will fall in love with Quake. Grab yourself a copy and come play me on the 'net.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
The graphics, sound, and intelligence factors combine to make a game that will scare the hell out of you! The main problem that Quake seems to have is a lack of identity. It wants to combine DOOM elements with Hexen elements which creates a mish-mash effect.

What else is there to say about a game this good? If you enjoy first-person 3D shooters, you're in for a treat. No parts of the game are anemically easy: you'll have to scratch and claw for everything you get. It's darker than the light-hearted Duke Nukem 3D and provides unmatched graphics to boot. A few years from now, when Mac gamers are at the point where they can't even consider playing a non-3D game, we'll all look back at Quake and say, "Yep, that's the game that made me first lust after a 3D card."

DOSJust Games Retro
Quake's great fun and the forefather of modern 3D shooters. At the time, it maintained enough FPS conventions to be familiar, but also showed off its new effects well enough to herald the start of a new era. Looking back at it, there's still enjoyment to be had, but the lack of a story or absolutely breathtaking levels leaves just the standard "shoot everything that moves" gameplay that's little different and less advanced than today's shooters. Its step backward in color and level detail also gave "2.5-D" games like Duke 3D a brief chance to hold on, but the 3D revolution was coming, and Quake certainly deserved to lead the way.

First, the game's graphics have more depth: Its dank corridors, twisty labyrinths, and shaky bridges over lethal rivers of flame give you the uncanny feeling of being trapped in a textured, sharp-cornered nightmare, rather than in the flattened-out hallucinations of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Second, the under-your-skin sound effects and ambient music on the $50 disc were composed by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who's been known to ponder a few issues concerning sex, violence, and gruesome death. And third, on a simple cost-per-kill basis, Quake is the most cathartic experience you can legally have within the confines of your own home, as you blow away vicious dogs, brutish ogres, and armed-to-the-teeth enemy infantrymen (although, unlike Doom, you can't paste your spouse's face onto a demon's body). It may not be healthy — heck, it may not even be normal — but it is a lot of fun.

Quake Mobile is more than just a technological showpiece for a phone you probably don't have. All these years later, it's still a great game that may be a consideration next time you're ready to buy a handset. As 3D chipsets become more common on mobile handsets, games like Quake (and Quake itself) will be more widely available. If you can, get this game and get a glimpse at the near future of mobile gaming.

DOSKingdom of Desire

Nintendo 64IGN
Despite its flaws, Nintendo 64 owners looking for the Quake experience can't go wrong with this game -- if for single-player mode alone. However, seasoned Quakers looking for the ultimate multiplayer game may want to rent before they buy.

This is a good game, but not great. As far as the Quake/Duke Nukem 3D argument goes, put me down for Duke. When it comes right down to it, Duke was just more fun. The levels looked like something, some of them even recognizable somethings. The weapons were more innovative and there were offensive items as well. But I'm not reviewing Duke in this space. Bottom Line: GREAT game engine and soundtrack. Almost everything else is not quite up to the task. If you're a fan of this type of game, buy it, you'll like it. If you have to make a choice between Quake and Duke, go for Duke.

DOSShooterplanet

Nintendo 64GameSpot
Still, N64 owners are lucky that they don't have to mess around with any extra hardware to get close-to-3Dfx-quality acceleration in Quake. The Nintendo's processor is a descendant of Silicon Graphics, the company that developed the GL technology enabling incredible texturing in 3D games. Hence, Quake's masonry environments and gangly monsters seem right at home in N64 territory. This ready-packed near-GL-quality plus the quick and easy deathmatch setup are really the only advantages over the original game. If Quake is a game experience you don't want to miss, and if a Nintendo is all you have, then Quake 64 is your ticket.

WindowsComing Soon Magazine
Overall, the game is not what it should have been. There were supposed to be things like nail-gun crucifixions, offerings of dead bodies to demon-gods, in close wrestling and flips, etc..., and none of it showed up. Next time Id gets an idea, they should keep it to themselves so that consumers won't be disappointed when it doesn't show up. And make sure their on-line setup works. You'll probably buy it anyhow because everyone's playing it, but it just isn't worth it. Now where did I put my Doom II...
68
DOSComing Soon Magazine
ID certainly has come a long way from the good ole' Commander Keen days. Every product that they produce always seems to be a big step ahead of their previous releases. I'm sure that many people have heard of Castle Wolfenstein 3D, but I don't think that many people have played it. Essentially it was a much cruder version of Doom. It was one of the first games that offered high speed, real 3D like movement. They borrowed the plot from the original Castle Wolfenstein game (for the Apple IIe) and pumped up the action. All you had to do was kill everything, get ammo and get out. It was simple, but effective.
64
SEGA SaturnGameSpot
Do you like a good 3D shooter with good technology and atmosphere but no plot? Are you willing to die and die and die again to open all the secrets of a single level map just because you like the satisfaction of knowing that you've found everything to be found there? Are you very, very good with a Saturn controller? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you might just want to play Quake for the Saturn. Otherwise you're better off with some game whose name might be a little less famous but whose appeal is a little more broad.
63
Nintendo 64Nintendo Land
In a nutshell, it's Doom 64 all over again. Objectively speaking, it's not a -bad- game, and it stands a fairer fighting chance than Doom does against more modern shooters. The catch is that, when compared to any more advanced first-person shooter, Quake 64 seems so depressingly -bland-. There's nothing in there that makes it stand out, even if it has it's good moments. If the coders behind Quake 64 had taken the time to improve and modify this game before bringing it to the N64, it might have had a brighter career. As it stands, only complete Quake-junkies need apply. Anyone else can no doubt find a far better and more rewarding game to spend their pennies on.
50
Nintendo 64The Video Game Critic
When you die, you have to restart the entire level! Curses! And who says there are no load times in cartridges? It's takes about ten seconds to "build" each stage! There's a split-screen mode to accommodate two players, but its jerky frame-rate and dark environments render it practically unplayable. Like most first-person shooters, this game hasn't aged particularly well, but if you're up for a challenge and can stomach the graphics, Quake will serve up your demons medium rare.
