This game is amazing, and I would gladly pay forty bucks for it. It almost seems wrong to enjoy a $15 title this much. Quantum Conundrum has more polish and charm than most full-price retail releases, and it plays just as well. It took me about eight hours to get through the story once, and I could easily spend another eight with it. There are collectibles scattered around, there's a leaderboard for each level so you can compete for best time and score, and you can get achievements by playing through all the levels and not dying. I don't have anything bad to say except that I wish I had more of it to play.

Quantum Conundrum isn’t of the same calibre as its inspirational predecessor at Valve, but if you’re looking for a new first-person game that doesn’t involve violence, weapons or adult themes of any kind, the low entry price seals it as a worthy addition to a genre that we hope will continue to blossom.

Quantum Conundrum is about as close as you can get to ripping off Portal without Valve contacting their lawyers. Some of the puzzles are fun, but the game ultimately devolves into nothing more than platform hopping. The moments of brilliance cannot make up for some truly awful writing and an anticlimactic ending!

With a few frustrating puzzles, some unclear solutions, and no cooperative play, Quantum Conundrum isn’t quite as polished as Portal 2 — but it’s a very close homage at a fraction of the price. If you’ve been aching for more drops from Valve, this game will satisfy your quandary.

Overall, I cannot recommend this game enough. The style, colorful world, and fun yet frustrating puzzles make up a wonderful summer game experience. The main game is a little bit on the short side, but there are collectables to find and target times to hit for the puzzle rooms, so there is plenty to do once you finish the core game. It has its problems, and again I hate always comparing games to similar ones, but if you had a good time with Portal, there is no reason why you shouldn’t drop the fifteen dollars and experience the fun that is Quantum Conundrum.

I think Quantum Conundrum suffers unfairly from the comparison to Portal. As a guy who has been gaming for something like 35 years, and game reviewing for about a decade, games like Portal don’t come along that often. By all means, cherish them when they do, but then don’t go holding it up like a yardstick against every other game that comes along – you’ll never be happy playing games again, and you’ll gig games that are perfectly good in their own right. Quantum Conundrum, thin plot and kind of bland atmosphere aside, has some great puzzle action to it. For the bargain price of $15, it is well worth the price of admission.

Bottom line, this game is a fine way to spend several hours for a fine price as well. The challenges will please more core gamers while the comprehensible level design will likely attract new players attracted to the art style and refreshingly different gameplay mechanics. I recommend it heartily to fans of Portal (either version) as well as gamers who may be suffering from shooter fatigue. The more quirky little games like this that we can support with our dollars, the better the ecosystem will become.

I recommend it to anyone passionate about spatial puzzles that require switching dimensions (and more). Some of its shortcomings, like the platforming sequences, could be regarded as relative, because some people will be better than others at appreciating distances and the moments at which they need to react. What’s more, Quantum Conundrum is one of those games that you can enjoy with the entire family and can be shown to all the relatives and teachers who still believe that video games are only comprised of explosions and violence. And if you can ignore, as much as possible, how much it has in common with… that other game, it will only get better.

The ambition is worthwhile on the whole, however, and if you'll frequently throw down the pad in fury, you'll just as frequently snatch it up again for another try. Beyond the wonky platforming, the only thing which holds Quantum Conundrum short of its inspiration's status is a too-comfortable script. There's none of Portal's black-hearted intertwining of premise and design principles, and while he's sharp enough to puncture preconceptions about kid-friendly content, the Professor is no GLaDOS. You'll forgive that shortage of wit, however, once the furniture starts to fly.

Quantum Conundrum is the king of puzzles. Sadly, some of the controls keep it from being king of the genre.

Fluffy is everything!

Quantum Conundrum's inventive puzzles put your brain to satisfying work. Everything surrounding the challenges feels a little empty and could use some of the rest of the game’s ingenuity. But a disappointing ending and lack of visual detail shouldn't keep you from the thrill of inter-dimensional puzzle solving. The foundation has been laid, and I hope to be cracking many more Quantum Conundrums in the future.

I know this review makes it sound like Quantum Conundrum is a bad game, despite my attempt to put a lot of positive points and disclaimers in to counter the primary issues. I just hope people understand what I mean— It’s by no means a bad game and in fact, it has all the earmarks of a fantastic game, simply because it’s so similar to the godly Portal. But the latter titles were never frustrating, and you felt more pride than relief upon finishing one of the puzzles. Here, glimpses of that brilliance are evident, but we lose sight of them far too often.

But, it is a very, very good series of puzzles. And, (I suppose we can’t avoid the elephant in the room any longer) if you’ve been looking for the smaller, cheaper, nephew to Professor Portal, without the co-op play, the polished presentation, or the laughs, Quantum Conundrum is it. It’s frustrating in that very good puzzler way and there are collectables and time challenges to get you returning for more. And, the game’s just so smart that every time you play your IQ will go up at least ten points, or you’ll have to go for a lie down in a dark room because your brain hurts.

But the occasional frustration that results from these weaker moments isn't enough to derail Quantum Conundrum. The rewarding sense of experimentation and problem-solving that dominates this quest makes putting up with its foibles worthwhile, and the twisting, puzzling halls of Quadwrangle Manor are substantial enough to justify the 1200-point ($15) price of admission. It doesn't always play to its strengths, but the clever ideas and confounding brainteasers of Quantum Conundrum make it a mostly enjoyable journey into the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh dimensions.

If you’re one for puzzle games and enjoyed Portal, Quantum Conundrum will be right up your alley, but the complexity of the puzzles later on in the game may deter the average gamer. This said, whichever category you fit into, Quantum Conundrum will surely entertain you for its 1200 MSP price tag and if you’re stuck to find something to play, it is well worth the pickup.

If you’ve already played both Portal games to death and are dying to sink your teeth into another mind-bending puzzler, look no further, for Quantum Conundrum will undoubtedly satiate that craving. Just don’t expect it to blow you away like jumping through portals for the first time.

Some of the puzzles, particularly once the time-slowing dimension has been introduced, are glorious pieces of game design that deserve to be applauded. The issue is that this has set itself up to be compared to two of PS3’s finest games, and comes up short in some key areas. And while we heartily recommend Quantum Conundrum’s downloadable dimension-hopping, we were thinking with portals the whole time.

I'm aware of the fact that it's not entirely fair to compare Quantum Conundrum to Portal -- they have mostly different creative teams behind the scenes, different budgets, etc. But with a high-profile developer like Kim Swift at the helm, and a major publisher like Square-Enix backing the project, it's near-impossible not to. There's no disputing that Quantum Conundrum has some great ideas here, and perhaps it's even something this creative team can build upon. I just hope they dial back the amount of first-person platforming involved to solve these puzzles the next time around, and create a more-compelling world that I actually want to explore.

I played Quantum Conundrum via the PSN version of the game, and found that the controller set-up seemed to work just fine for the game, and felt pretty natural despite being introduced on PC first. On the technical side of things there were some framerate hiccups that occurred, and a bit of texture pop-in, both of which are more noticeable when the game loads in new areas which it tries to mask behind sliding doors. But overall the game performs on the PS3 without much issue. It’s not the best looking game on the market, but I enjoyed the brightly hued color of the stages, despite some of the more repetitious environments that divide the rooms.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
Taken in small doses, any given level in Quantum Conundrum can be a fun diversion. As a whole, it fails to become more than a sum of its parts. The concept may be inspired and ambitious, but the repetitive puzzle rooms and twitchy platform controls make Quantum Conundrum feel rough around the edges.

Quantum Conundrum is a competent title with a questionable focus on platforming over puzzles. Valve needs to re-hire Kim and these devs, and they need to work together again. Portal was great due to the sum of their work; individually, their “dream” projects veer off with bad design choices. As for what you should do with your money? Try the demo. It will only get harder, but I’m inclined to recommend an original, faulty product over a safe, boring AAA title you’ve played before – any time, any place, any dimension.

Quantum Conundrum, if judged by its own merits, feels like an unexceptional puzzle game that’ll leave those craving an intellectual challenge wanting. It has some interesting ideas, but it can’t quite figure out what to do with them or how to create truly engaging puzzles. Too easy for older gamers, and a little over the heads of younger gamers, Quantum Conundrum finds itself in a sort of purgatory between the two, and like a younger brother it can’t help but live in the shadow of its older sibling’s success.
