Quantum Redshift zooms onto the Xbox. With Quantum Redshift, Microsoft floors the pedal to the metal and delivers an impressive futuristic racing game with incredible graphics and an assortment of features that effectively create a believable sense of high-speed adventure.

If you are looking for some hot racing action set in the distant future using high-tech craft, destructive weapons, with intense combat on challenging tracks then look no further. Quantum Redshift is a worthy Xbox counterpart and challenger to Wipeout Fusion on the PS2. It looks better and in many ways plays better, and while it may not be as deep or difficult it’s the most fun you can have going 900mph with your pants on.

Quantum Redshift is a joy to play. My weekend wasn't going too well (for personal reasons), but this game made me forget all about my problems. It took me away to another time and place, one that was peaceful and fun. It's exactly what I needed to get my mind off that awful thing we call "life." For that reason alone, I'd recommend this game as a rental, but it is so much more than that. Quantum Redshift is filled with non-stop, super-fast racing action that can't be found in any other Xbox game. If you've got the cash, don't hesitate to buy this classic racer.

So what's not to like about this game? Well the difficulty goes through the roof when you go from amateur to expert level, and some of the advanced tracks are very narrow and windy, requiring memorization to do well. Also, Quantum Redshift isn't very original, and you probably have a game like this in your collection already. But it's certainly a wild, exciting ride. I played it until my index finger was sore. Sounds like a recommendation to me.

Bringing proceedings to a close, despite being pretty non-progressive, Quantum Redshift is very hard to dislike, and if nothing else, is easily the fastest, toughest and most attractive Wipeout game ever, even if it never tries to be anything more sophisticated or ground-breaking. Ultimately, if the Xbox is going to crack the mass-market, like Sony in the past, then it is fun and simple arcade-style games like Quantum Redshift that are going to do it.

Whether it's worthy of purchase comes down to your tastes. It's by no means a screaming "must have" release for the simple reason that games like this have been done to death, and many veterans may feel like they're re-treading old ground. On the other hand, Quantum Redshift is easily the best game of its type. It's by far the best looking, plays brilliantly, and has huge replay value thanks to the upgrade system. It also has the now standard four player split screen multiplayer mode, which sadly has to be unlocked, (an annoying oversight), but at least it's a good incentive to play through the single player campaign.

Getting past the redshift level will be a chore in itself, requiring you to perform at almost almost untainted fashion. Multiplayer races are a lot of fun, but anything more than two players on screen makes the screen size a bit too small to effectively navigate, system link would have been a nice touch for more racers. With all the things that Quantum Redshift does right, it still somehow lacks lasting appeal in my book. Possibly the rewards could have been greater. Racing fans will without a doubt get their money’s worth, but the average gamer may only see it back in the Xbox occasional

While Quantum Redshift capably fills the vacuum of futuristic racing games for the Xbox, gamers already familiar with the Wipeout or Extreme-G games won't really find anything meaningfully different here. It's a pretty fun game on its own merits, so those who haven't grown tired of the Wipeout formula and want to see some flashy visuals should have a good time with what the game has to offer.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Quantum Redshift is like a college fling: It looks pretty enough, but lacks the substance you’d need for a long-term relationship. Many of the key elements, like the upgradeable ships and the rival system, feel half-baked, especially when compared to games that have attempted the same mechanics with much greater success. If you’re in love with speed, then Quantum Redshift gives you the best sense of fast-moving gameplay since Star Wars Racer, but it’s lacking in so many other areas that it might best be considered a rental.

GameSpy
Quantum Redshift is competently programmed, very nice to look at, and absolutely generic, mistakenly offering "replay incentive" in the form of awful storylines and unlockable characters instead of exciting races. Even the multiplayer mode is a snooze. You'll never play a more stunningly average game.

IGN
Quantum Redshift looks great and it feels like it's supposed to be great. But for all that, it really lacks a unique style, intense gameplay, or any persuasive reason to keep playing. While the rivalry system is good on paper, it's poorly executed and really has no affect on the overall feel of the game. For a new game on a new console, Quantum Redshift feels dated. Not a horrible pick-up, but really this is an incredibly standard game. If you're itching for a Wipeout experience and you don't have a PS2, then this may be the way to go for you.

Redshift is not a bad game. Its fairly enjoyable and may satisfy Wipeout fans looking to get their fix from the Xbox. But rather than lead the pack, Redshift follows the lead of older (and better) games and ends up feeling purely average. There is nothing within the gameplay to separate it from its contemporaries, and its minimalist approach to the genres most established gameplay devices leaves it as nothing more than a watered-down version of better games.
