There is some flicker and slowdown in the graphics, but nothing objectionable. This classic shooter belongs in every gamer's collection.

It'll take hours of play learning all the strategic moves essential for surviving the different problem areas, which is why the game is so damned addictive. You will need the old matchsticks to keep your eyes open through the too-short hours of night if you're going to get anywhere near level eight.

In the early 21st century, the people of Earth realised that they must preserve their planet. For many decades, they have been keeping the atmosphere clean, conserving fuels and maintaining a healthy environment. Unfortunately, when such a healthy planet exists, alien forces become jealous…

I did have my doubts about the Spectrum version of R-Type, but Electric Dreams has coped admirably, and the end result is fantastic!

ZX SpectrumCrash!
So it's arrived. The Spectrum conversion of one of the arcade's best looking coin-ops. Well it was bound to be disappointment wasn't it? But wait a minute, what's this? Colourful, well-drawn sprites in an absolute orgy of violent action, that's what! Okay, so there's quite a bit of colour clash, and sometimes it's hard to see what's happening, but all the same R-Type is amazingly playable and deviously addictive. The stunning range of weapons featured on the coin-op is available here too, preserving the coin-op's strategic aspects. After collecting a few extra weapons, your ship becomes an absolute fortress of weaponry with heat-seeking rockets, lasers and plasma bolts. And believe me you need all the armaments you can get to combat the constant barrage of varied, multi-coloured enemies. As for the massive, end-of-level monsters... All these features go to make R-Type a truly excellent and challenging shoot-'em-up.

SEGA Master SystemMean Machines
The lack of good shoot ‘em ups on the Master System was redressed when this was released; it’s one of the best blasters around on any system. Like Julian, I find the slowness of the game a little irritating, but that doesn’t really detract from the high quality of challenge here. The range and variety of the power ups gives this extra oomph, and I’m happy to recommend this to any Sega owner. Watch out for the end-of-level guardians though!

TurboGrafx-16The Video Game Critic
The stages are your typical space stations and slimy caverns, but the enemies and bosses are quite disgusting. R-Type is not for the faint of heart, and less skilled gamers are bound to get frustrated. Certain stages force you to move in certain predetermined patterns to survive, and even when you know the pattern it's hard to stay alive. For dyed-in-the-wool shooter fans however, R-Type is hard to beat.

SEGA Master SystemIMPLANTgames
Overall, R-Type is a fantastic game. The graphics push Sega’s 8-bit wonder system to it’s limit, and often to it’s knees. The soundtrack is excellent, rivaling many 16-bit games. The game play and level design are truly head and shoulders above other games of the era. Hardcore shmup fans and newbies a like will appreciate this game. This is a no brainer.

SEGA Master SystemDefunct Games
R-Type is the kind of shooter that is fun to play no matter what system it's on and this Master System version is no exception. This is a fantastic game filled will imaginative bosses, diverse levels, and a whole bunch of enemies to shoot up. While some of the unique game play devices may seem tired, it's hard to argue with the game that created many of the cliches. If you're looking for a great shooter for your Sega Master System you can't go wrong with R-Type.

TurboGrafx-16Defunct Games
It's not an exaggeration to say that this is one of the hardest games of all time, something that will take you months of constant plays before you beat it (if you ever do beat the ultra-difficult last boss). But it's worth it, and it's easy to see why the game is regarded as such a classic when you start playing it. Regardless of whether or not you end up beating the final boss, chances are good you'll have a good time getting there and that's all that matters.

ZX SpectrumThe Games Machine (UK)
Making excellent use of the host machine, this version is a sight to see with its incredible use of colour, minimal attribute clash, masses of aliens to blast and frantic gameplay. A small point for complaint is the slow scrolling - hardly noticeable as you are too busy killing and avoiding. This game blows away almost other shoot-'em-up on the Spectrum to date.

Arcade addicts may find the squat screen does marginally limit manoeuvring space, but the game's all the more challenging as a result of it. If fault can be found (and you'd be hard to pushed) then maybe the sound could have been better; as the tunes stand they are good but they don't push the Amiga. This is a superior and very slick blast-'em-up.

R-Type is by far the best blast available on the Sega, so it goes without saying that no shoot 'em up fan should be without it.

Every court case has two winners – the solicitors. R-type is the result of another case where the losers won. Factor 5, a German software house wrote a scrolling shoot ‘em up called Katakis. Katakis looked too much like R-Type, a licence Activision guarded with zeal, as you would if you had paid Irem, the Japanese originators, lots and lots of Yen. US Gold had Katakis modified to look less like R-Type and called the result Denaris. So Factor 5 wrote two games which looked pretty similar. But the best was yet to come. Katakis was such a good R-Type rip-off that the Germans were chosen to produce the official version.

The thrills and spills of the coin-op have been successfully reproduced, and consequently the game is fiendishly addictive - there are huge rips in the office carpet where I was dragged away to write this review.

Atari STACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
The superb Irem classic makes it onto the ST at last, but a little disappointingly. The graphics are colourful and the gameplay's good but it's just not as remarkable as you'd expect after seeing the excellent Speccy version. Still a great shoot-em-up though.

Commodore 64ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
The classic Irem coin-op turned out to be a superb Spectrum shoot-em-up, with all the gameplay intact and some surprisingly good graphics. The C64 version is pretty good too, but not quite up to the Speccy standard. Still well worth a look at, though, if you're a blasting fan.

Atari STThe Games Machine (UK)
R-Type shows what Software Studios can do when they get down to business. The inevitably jerky scrolling is present but sufficiently low-key to not be noticed. Each level and enemy sprite is attractively presented and remains faithful to its origins. Although the use of colours is not subtle, and there's an absence of colour in the scrolling background, the end result proves that even a highly graphic-intensive coin-op can be converted with considerable success.

SEGA Master SystemACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
The two bad things to note about this version are that ship movement is sluggish and when there are a lot of sprites on-screen it flickers horribly. Apart from that it is just as addictive and thrilling as ever. One of the best shoot-em-ups on the Sega.

Isn’t the software industry backward? You take the hottest home computer in the UK (PC Engine and 386 PC excluded), capable of beating the competitors hands down, and what happens? It takes months for software to appear on it. Take the case of R-Type. All these poor Amiga owners are sat about looking lost when the 64 owners are saying how bad R-Type is, and ST owners are sat about saying how bad R-Type is. Mr Commodore Amiga is sat there saying how he wishes R-Type would come out on the Amiga so he could say how bad it was…
Now, months later, it has appeared and Mr Amiga can run out into the streets saying how good Amiga R-Type is, but nobody wants to listen. R-Type is old news. Everybody is talking about the Pamella Bordes licence now, and consequently he loses all his friends and starts listening to heavy metal, because he is no longer fit to join society.

WiiIGN
R-Type's the first game to break the established VC pricing structure – it costs 800 Wii Points, 200 more than other TurboGrafx-16 titles. That's because we in the States are getting the full R-Type, including all eight levels. Japanese Wii owners have to make two separate purchases to get the full game – R-Type Part 1 and R-Type Part 2, each containing only four stages of play, and each priced at 600 Wii Points. It's a weird arrangement, but it reflects how R-Type was originally released in Japan years ago, spread across two separate game cards. Feel free to pick your perspective on the price. Either we Americans are getting a deal because the game effectively costs 400 Points less for us than in Japan, or we're getting screwed because it's the only Turbo title that's priced above the 600 level. Confused? That's Irem for ya.

There's no need to panic! It's all under control. Yes, bloodthirsty aliens from the planet BYDO are on a collision course for Earth and yes you have been elected to battle them on your own. But, you do have the R-Type all-purpose space vehicle and it is perfect for you alien-annihilating needs. You'll do fine...really.

Commodore 64Zzap!
On the whole it's not bad, the graphics are OK and it's quite an interesting blast in its own right, but it doesn't capture all the atmosphere of the arcade original. It's probably because the weapons seem a bit weedy compared to the coin-op; the whole thing just lacks that little spark to make it really good.

TurboGrafx-16Digital Press - Classic Video Games
Everything is perfect here except that even at the easiest skill level, this game is insanely difficult. It’s not so much that enemy ships and fire are coming at you from 360 degrees, it’s that once you’re hit (and only once) you have to start the level over with the lowest level of firepower. This is one of those games that you either get through on one ship or you die so many times you’ll want to crack the durable little card in half. Fortunately, the card is very durable or mine would, in fact, be cracked in half.
