Radiata Stories is a perfect example of many elements coming together seamlessly to create a compelling whole. it isn't about the occasionally repetitive combat or the familiar story (which isn't as predictable as you may initially think). It's about all of the pleasant surprises along the way, like funny dialogue, a great supporting cast, and Jack's slow but steady evolution into a decent human being. It's this mixture of personality and content that earns Radiata Stories a place among Square Enix's greatest adventures and certainly the best straight-up RPG so far this year.
With an enchanting story, beautiful graphics and characters, and only a few minor time management and battle flaws, Radiata Stories, in my opinion, is one of the best RPGs to be released in 2005. If you like getting through the game quickly with complex battles and extravagant CG sequences, you may want to turn another way. However, if you're into secret items, long journeys and billions of other extras, this game is right up your alley.
Radiata Stories is a gem, well worth the time of anyone looking for a quality role-playing game. It's quite re-playable, being one of those cool games where you can take some of the things you've gained from the first time through along with the second. Not only that, but you have to play it twice (or save the game before a certain junction) to truly take in the entire dynamic story. Don't ever doubt the value of a good Japanese RPG...this is the kind of offering that will allow it to continue to shine as its own genre.
Overall the game rocks and managed to keep me playing for hundreds of hours despite my having to restart and lose 50 hours of gameplay a couple times because some screwed up thing happened and I ended up completely unable to get all of the characters. I am a perfectionist, I need everything and everyone. This game seriously messes with me, and yet I still love it. Take that as you will, but only if you take it to mean "this game is really freakin' good."
But, hey, these are all rather tiny problems, and I still feel good giving this game a hearty thumbs-up. It's got oodles of personality and a great sense of humor. I think I can stomach some un-skippable cut scenes. If you're in the mood for something playful that isn't afraid to let its' hair down and be silly, well, maybe you should stop playing video games all the time and go out and meet some girls. If you're not up for that, why not take a gander at Radiata Stories. It's a super-sweet RPG that won't take no for an answer. When's the last time you got that from a girl? I know I sure haven't. God I'm so lonely...
Malgré bien des éloges, une chose manque cruellement à ce jeu afin d’en faire un titre unique : une âme. Combien de fois le joueur s’étonnera à dire « Ah tiens, j’ai déjà vu ça dans Tales of… », ou encore « Tiens, c’est pas les mêmes environnements que dans Dragon Quest VIII ? » ? Bon, c’est du repompage, certes, mais ils auraient pu choisir de pires jeux pour concevoir le leur. D’ailleurs, un joueur occasionnel ne risque pas d’apercevoir tous ces petits vols d’idées à droite et à gauche, mais une touche personnelle aurait fait beaucoup de bien au jeu, mais au lieu de ça on a parfois l’impression de joueur à plusieurs titres en même temps. A défaut d’offrir de réelles innovations, Radiata Stories propose une excellente histoire et des combats dynamiques, pour un jeu féerique qui ne manque pas de panache. Une valeur sûre !

Live the epic and unforgettable adventure of an unlikely hero who becomes the chief character of a story so magnanimous, it's etched into gamers' minds forever. That's one way of making an RPG. It's traditional, and it's worked many times over in the past. So sometimes you have to ask yourself, "Is this always the story I want to live out for the rest of my role-playing days?" Usually the answer is yes, as long as the characters, battle system, settings, and every little thing changes to a certain degree except for the type of direction the game usually flows in.
The world of Radiata Stories is, as its name implies, more storybook than reality. The kingdom of Radiata lies at the center of the world, and is the center of human power. Outlying nations in all directions are home to various humanoids collectively known as "fairy folk," whose numbers include dwarves, elves, goblins and so on.
If you’ve played Star Ocean, Star Ocean: Second Story, or Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, you are familiar with the work of tri-Ace, a development group formerly owned by Enix but now part of the merged SquareEnix family. But if you think the Star Ocean series has prepared you for Radiata Stories, you couldn’t be more wrong. While both Star Ocean and Radiata Stories are action-style RPGs, the similarities pretty much end there.
Au final, Radiata Stories se révèle être un titre surprenant. Il n’est pas question d’une aventure épique à la Star Ocean comme beaucoup, dont moi, l’attendaient, pas de scènes en CG titanesques avec des explosions toutes les heures comme dans les blockbusters Square-Enix, simplement un RPG basé avant tout sur son univers enchanteur et sa vivacité. Une petite merveille de fraîcheur qui fait plaisir à voir, et à jouer, dont il faut accepter ses quelques défauts avant de pouvoir discerner ses immenses qualités. Dans le fond, du bonheur!
O grande mérito de "Radiata Stories" é ter personagens cativantes e um roteiro com bastante humor, amparados por um belo visual, que mais lembra um desenho japonês, além de dublagens seguras. Esses ingredientes fazem esquecer até mesmo um enredo cheio de clichês. O jogo em si não possui muitas novidades, mas se trata de um sistema bem feito, que deve agradar àqueles que estão achando os RPGs de hoje muito complicados. Mas mesmo quem já é veterano no assunto também poderá se divertir, pois achar 175 personagens não é tarefa das mais simples.
As a guy who liked Star Ocean: Till the End of Time more than most, Radiata Stories is a project I've been anticipating for quite some time. Developed by the same tri-Ace team responsible for the aforementioned RPG (and the very cool PSOne RPG, Valkyrie Profile), Radiata is, on the surface, what the Suikoden series might have been had Square Enix bankrolled it. While that doesn't mean that players can expect to meet the 108 Stars of Destiny or build ever-evolving fortresses, it does mean that they can anticipate a somewhat similar structure in regards to pacing, theme and the recruitment concept. At least, that's how it seems at first.
The developers of the renowned Star Ocean series punch up the interactivity with their latest action-RPG hybrid, Radiata Stories. The branching tale of Jack unfolds in a uniquely interactive experience that incorporates some of the best, and worst, elements of this blended genre. This interactivity comes from Jack's punting skills, as he must kick everything in order to uncover tasty items. Unfortunately, this quaint metaphor hardly masks that ever-present RPG cliché of searching every nook and cranny, and it doesn't take more than five booted bunk beds before all interest in the kicking aspect wanes.
Radiata Stories doesn't really bring anything new to the genre, but it's an enjoyable game simply because it delivers the humor that role-playing games so often lack.
Square-Enix has built a reputation other publishers must lust after. Fans expect high-quality games simply because these two names are printed on the package...and rarely are they disappointed. Radiata Stories, however, might throw some gamers for a loop. It packs the RPG gameplay that brand name implies, but its laid-back atmosphere and unusual ideas may result in as many yawns as thrills.
Radiata Stories is Square Enix’s (and tri-Ace’s) latest entry into the world of minor role play games powered by an imaginative storyline. It follows the tale of Jack Russell, who dreams of following his father into becoming a Radiata Knight. But first he must pass the initiate’s tourney, which he really fails to ready for and as a result he is humbled by a young lady named Ridley Silverlake.
When all is said and done, Radiata Stories isn't all that bad of a time. However, depending on how you like your RPGs, it may also not be that good of a time. It has good ideas - all of which have been attempted before - and executes them in a way that leaves the title covered in mediocrity at best. Rent it first to see whether or not it's to your tastes.
In the end, Radiata Stories is an entertaining game, but nothing above and beyond what you can already find on the market. The "remarkable" features the game boasts are actually rather stilted, the dialogue, while remaining witty and humerous, hinders the development of the overall plot, and the save points make you want to curl up and die. While I enjoyed the graphics and the overall battle system, I found the rest of the game to be rather bland overall. It's not the worst RPG I've ever played, but it's hardly the best and you might want to rent this one before you commit to purchasing it.
When all is slashed and looted, Radiata Stories is an unremarkable RPG whose stabs at innovation end up feeling rather inconsequential. It's perfectly playable and is not a bad game, but it lacks any real hook or draw. This is the same bog-standard adventure you've had dozens of times before, only prettier and ... well, prettier. If you're up for some brainless stat-building and cutscene-viewing, then Radiata might be an agreeable purchase. Those seeking something more exciting should look elsewhere.
While the level of exploration and interaction is nowhere near the quality of later games in The Legend of Zelda series, Radiata Stories offers several genuinely humorous moments, a colorful world, and a cast of characters that stick with you long after you’ve powered down the PS2. Those who plan on befriending all 177 characters should expect to invest a good 90 hours of playtime, although the main storyline can be finished in a respectable 35 hours or so. Radiata Stories’ simplistic combat, cutesy graphics (think Playmobil), and goofy dialogue (it’s not often you hear phrases like “shut it,” “far out,” and “way cool” in a fantasy setting) will likely turn off hardcore RPG fans, but if you’re in the mood for something unusual, something that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Stories is worth a spot in your library.
This is a game that had potential and is only marred by subpar voice acting and poor gameplay. The story is passable, so if the gameplay had been interesting and fun, it would have earned another few points, and who knows, those points may have trickled down to some of the other items on our review list. But sadly, this game just isn’t the quality that I’ve come to expect from Tri-Ace, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy it on faith. Rent it first, please.
