This is worth checking out, nevermind the very low score this game is getting from some outlets. Give it a rental -- I had my doubts too, but it's a really fun game, although it's short and it has some issues.

As the E3 2009 RTS Award Winner from a couple of sites, you would have expected this game to rival what else was shown and there were some amazing games shown. Now we get to finally play the final game and it fails to even come close to greatness. Yes, the Real Time Strategy side of things is great and should be a game by itself, either released as a budget title or XBLA game, but with the downright horrible First Person Shooter elements bringing down this game to a level of gaming dullness we gamers should never have to experience.

Raven Squad is not terrible but it ticks just about every box on the way to being decidedly average. Experienced gamers will romp through the story and only the co-op mode provides any real fun. At a budget price you get what you pay for and this game may well pass a few hours, sadly though, it is a very poor clone of GRAW that has arrived a number of years too late.

Raven Squad is a hard game to review for me because I really like the idea, I really want to like the game, and I did manage to stay entertained long enough to finish it. Of course it only lasts about five hours, I am a sucker for action games, and I love the idea of something that breaks the mold. I recommend renting the game if you have even the slightest interest in either genre or if you find it at around the $30 mark then don't hesitate to indulge. However, don't expect it to change the way you play either type of game.

But no matter what we have said about Raven Squad, let it be known that it tried (which is more then what can be said for a lot of games), and for that, our hats go off to the team at Atomic Motion. Putting them back on however, it is imperative that the grim reality is hit home: Raven Squad is not a good game. To clarify, it’s not a game that you should spend your money on quite yet. Maybe, after the passage of time, when you can find it cheap or even for free, it will be worth a cursory glance. For the moment however, it’s best to skip this one out.

Those who buy the game instead of renting it will be irritated that there's only four or five hours' worth of campaigning to do here, and no real reason save a few lame unlockables to replay anything. Maybe the powers that be thought a $10 break (Raven Squad costs $50 instead of the usual $60) was a real favor to consumers, but that still goes far beyond what four hours of even a good game are worth. When it comes right down to it, Raven Squad starts with a brilliant concept and doesn't bother to flesh it out into a fun or compelling game. It's practically a gift to competing developers. In that regard all it lacks is a note reading, "Here's a template for a hybrid FPS-RTS; do something useful with it, because we don't feel like it."

Raven Squad sounded great on paper, and in many regards you could have forgiven poor graphics and dodgy sound if there was some flair and fun to be had with the gameplay. Sadly there is not. Poor controls, horrible AI, inane story and an overall lack of polish let the game down below an already low bar. You might get some enjoyment from the game if you like punishing yourself, but to be frank, there are so many better shooters on the market that it's incredibly hard to recommend such an unfulfilled game. Buy or rent at your own peril.

It’s a shame because we can see the promise in Raven Squad – it’s a concept with great possibilities and oddly compelling. Perhaps if it had been a dedicated PC title with a bigger budget it could have worked. As it is, it’s a half-baked mess and a sad example of just how not to mix your genres.

Raven Squad is one of those games that could have been innovative and great, but falls way short of the mark. The combination of real time strategy and first person shooting works well…in theory, but Raven Squad lacks the execution to make it a good game. The FPS half of Raven Squad is generic action we’ve seen in any shooter; add in an obtuse default control scheme (Q to switch weapons? really?) meant for a console controller, and nothing there impresses. The strategy portion of Raven Squad is severely underdeveloped: the fact that you are restricted to context-sensitive, one-button commands says a lot. The AI is so incompetent that you simply cannot play the entire game from the overhead view: units will rarely engage enemy units unless specifically told to do so. Really, the RTS mode is only for scouting enemy locations (and, since the view shows everything, it makes the game extraordinarily easy). The linear level designs leave nothing to the imagination.

Raven Squad is a monotonous, short and somewhat ugly FPS that is hard to recommend to anyone that isn’t looking for the interactive equivalent of a Steven Seagal flick.

Raven Squad is a good idea gone bad. It doesn't help that the story is hopelessly weak and cliché with wooden voice acting to bring down the excitement level of any enemy encounter. The FPS/RTS blending is an idea worth exploring again but maybe not best served as another Raven Squad game.

It feels like two terrible games stapled together. Like a game developed by two teams, each slacking off in the hope that the other would make something decent enough to prop them up. Raven Squad is less a genre-blend than a genre car-crash. But even then, car crashes are generally more interesting to watch.

Just another ruined idea to throw on the ever-increasing pile. Not even the fact that one of the lines includes the term, "Satan's little piss-pot," could save this.

You could finish Raven Squad in around four hours. If you want to share the pain, you can ask a friend to join you in missions online, in which case each player controls a single squad. Cooperative play doesn't improve the action, but it all but removes the shallow RTS elements, since you only need to worry about your own squad when playing with others. It's also buggy. At one point, a squadmate clipped into a building and couldn't move; in another, the controls stopped responding and the mission objective pointer disappeared. Misery loves company, as they say, but it's better just to avoid misery altogether. To this end, don't bother with Raven Squad.

If you're about to fall asleep playing the game you can attempt to play a LIVE game where you can play through the missions again with a fellow LIVE gamer. The reason I say attempt is because that's all you'll be doing. No-one for the love of god seems to play this game online and I don't blame them. There are far better and more enjoyable games on the market at the moment and it's to no surprise that this is the outcome. If you do have 2 Xbox 360's you can play via System Link, but then you have to buy two copies of the game and that would be scandalous. In summary I suggest you avoid Raven Squad like the plague. That is all.

If you are looking for a tactical military shooter, I recommend picking up either of the Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter games, as they are legitimate products of this generation in video games. I think I'll go play them right now just to wash away the vile taste of Raven Squad.

There's a good idea behind all the mess, but no amount of digging will uncover it. I hope Atomic Motion can find the experience to capitalise on their ideas, but they have done themselves no justice here.

Evitadlo a toda costa.

Don’t play this game. The idea of blending a first-person shooter with a real-time strategy game isn’t a bad one, but the execution was a complete failure. I’ll look back fondly at my time reviewing Raven Squad -- all three hours of it -- but only because I couldn’t stop laughing at the fact that this game exists.

Raven Squad started off as a really promising game: movie-like opening scenes, good music, smooth controls and view switching and a very interesting concept blending FPS and RTS. Unfortunately, good intentions alone are not enough to make a good game. Plagued by poor and outdated graphics, horrid voice acting and some of the dumbest AI of the year, the potential hit quickly turned into another bitter miss. Too bad.
