Red Dead Revolver escapes the hangman and lives on as a topnotch action/adventure set against the Old West.
Once in development by Capcom and then put on death row, Red Dead Revolver has been saved from the hangman by Rockstar Games. Not only has Red escaped the rope, but it has also evolved into a brilliant third-person action game loaded with style, technique, and clever homages to the Wild West.

The gun targeting system is generally well implemented, but frustrating at times - particularly with fast moving opponents. But if the old west strikes your fancy, I reckon you'd be a coot not to pony up the cash and take a shot at Red Dead Revolver.

I really enjoyed the time I spent with this title, yet walked away wishing that it had a little bit more meat on its bones. If you find satisfaction in mindless action games in the tradition of Max Payne, you'll surely get your fill with Red Dead Revolver.

Red Dead Revolver is a perfect flashback to simpler era in the game industry. Sure it's in 3-D and the controls are a bit more complicated, but the game certainly owes a lot to the action shooters of the past. Anyone who grew up on games like Contra or the above mentioned Sunset Riders will certainly have a blast here throughout the entire game. Those people who have never played these games will still have fun as well. This is, at the very least, an absolute rental if not an outright purchase.

Red Dead Revolver is a solid action game set in the old west. This game is definitely worth a rental or purchase. The lack of multiplayer and short story mode are the only drawbacks in otherwise an excellent game.

The story behind the development of Red Dead Revolver is nearly more interesting than the in-game story. Originally, the title was being developed by Angel Studios as a zany arcade shooter for Capcom. Rockstar acquired the development house along with the rights to the game, and after a swift renaming of the studio to Rockstar San Diego, it set about converting the title into far grittier and authentic fare. Well, it does have a hard-man reputation to uphold.

As far as anyone can remember, Western-style shooters of some kind have graced the videogame area. Whether it was Custard's Last Stand, Desperado, Freddie Farkas, Gunsmoke, Sunset Riders, Mad Dog McCree, or even Lethal Enforcers 2, the good old Western has been a staple gamers' could rely on, until recently, that is. When Surreal Games and Activision demoed Gunslinger at E3 in 2000, the fever for the dusty, relentless Western rose once again, only to be cut brutally short. Now, after acquiring Capcom Entertainment's once promising Red Dead Revolver from a sure hanging, the master of all things mafia, guns and style is giving us its take on the Western, revitalizing not only the game, but the shooter theme along with it.

At its core, Red Dead Revolver is a tribute to the Western film genre. The simplistic gameplay does reasonably represent the development of the majority of Western films however that doesn’t excuse it as a shortcoming in the game. Along these lines, it is inexcusable that the multiplayer mode is so underdeveloped. It is as if Rockstar came up with a nice innovation for a multiplayer mode and forgot (or simply didn’t care) to complete the programming of it. This flaw is further magnified as a result of the large onus placed on you to unlock new characters and levels for the multiplayer game. However, while these things are frustrating, they are somewhat numbed due to the aforementioned impressive presentation as well as the well composed soundtrack. Adding all of these elements together yields an action game that offers nothing less than a fun gaming experience that ultimately leaves you wanting more after a rather short period of time.

Rockstar's Western-themed shooter has some great style and enough fun moments to justify the rough edges. So, there's been this sentiment in the world of film for years now that the Western, one of the few wholly American storytelling genres, is all but dead. Save for occasional flashes of inspiration, like Unforgiven, by and large, it's hard to argue against the fact that the Western seems to be less and less culturally relevant with each passing year. Rockstar's Red Dead Revolver, which takes heaping helpings of inspiration from staple Westerns like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Wild Bunch, and even a little Bonanza, stakes its claim against this trend. There's some great atmosphere in this new shooter, and, for fans of the genre, it's great to see a Western game with some care put into it. Unfortunately, much of the game lacks focus, and the experience suffers for it.

Its heart is in the right place, but Red Dead Revolver tries to go in too many directions at once. There are too many different playable characters and too many unique gameplay elements that just don't gel. And though the story is well told, there's just not enough focus on Red. If you can forgive Red Dead Revolver for its hubris, you'll find a game with some great style and enough fun moments to justify the rough edges. It may not have what it takes to bring about a full-fledged Western revival in the world of video games, but it's an honest try.

A game with the hype that Red Dead Revolver had should be able to back it up on the screen. But the game falls short a little in some areas that I wouldn't say kill the game, but will cause some question marks or frustration. I'd say overall it's an ok game, but nothing more than an average execution of an above-average idea. And here's an idea for next time, how about some online play? Anyway, I would say Red Dead is a rental for sure, but nothing more than that. It's just too average a game for me.

Red Dead Revolver isn’t as quick in the draw as we’d like it to be but its action-packed moments are surprisingly thrilling. The game’s controls and visuals could have used some extra attention but it’s hard to not appreciate its finer moments, its plentiful extras and a too-hard-to-put-down multiplayer mode. If you love a good Western give this one a shot. If you’re not, this one still makes a great weekend rental.

Drinking. Gambling. Roughhousing. Damsels and drunks. Outlaws and officers. Cowboys and Indians. Robbing banks and standing your ground in a duel. Those old Western folklore's you've probably heard about certainly were wild, weren't they? This was a time that saw the progress of the first American railroads, gave birth to several historic figures such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James, and has made it possible for the tales and the legends to live on or serve as a basis for some original creations throughout cinema and video game mediums alike. Red Dead Revolver isn't based on a true story, though. But, since we haven't seen many Western-themed shooters, at least not in a while, Rockstar figured they'd grant the wishes of those who've been waiting on this previously canceled 2003 release from Capcom.

I guess the only other thing that really pissed me off is the way the game unfolds itself to you. It’s almost as if you take baby steps to the next level. Every level takes a maximum of 5-7 minutes to finish; some are way, way, way shorter. And when a level is over, you’re done. No walking around and looking for items, no hidden whatevers, nothing, poof, you’re back in the fucking town which barely ever has anything exciting going on.

It’s been a heck of a long time since being a cowboy was considered cool - I’d say at least twenty years. Surely there are readers who will reckon to argue, citing country music’s recent surge in mainstream popularity – which thanks to the likes of Garth Brooks has somehow justified cowboy attire as formal wear (egad!) – but just because an idiot throws on a ten gallon hat and boots, he ain’t no cowboy…he’s probably just balding.

PlayStation 2PSM
Stuck in limbo for some time, Red Dead has risen from it's grave, but is ultimately left half-standing, Red himself lacks the heroic resonance to compel you to fight his battle, and the gameplay - while littered with fantastic ideas - fails to achieve a cohesive Western vision due to balancing issues and surfacing execution. The seeds are in place for a magnificent series, though, so perhaps a sequel could bring the ambitious concepts introduced here to fruition.

Inexplicably delayed by several months on these shores, this Friday finally sees the PAL release of Rockstar San Diego's Western-tinged shooter Red Dead Revolver - but was it worth the wait? After the extended hiatus between its appearance in fully playable form on the Capcom stand at E3 2002 and its Take-Two rebirth, we're simultaneously glad to see it finally make it onto the shelves, but also slightly underwhelemed by what amounts to a bite-sized, repetitive Max Payne-inspired gaming experience that quick-off-the-draw types will finish in about six hours.

Lord love ‘em, the varmints at Rockstar San Diego didn’t want to let this poor Capcom castoff die. A video game with the feel and appeal of a classic Western would have been a fantastic achievement and a big seller for those of us who indiscriminately love gunslingers and/or samurai. Unfortunately, what we got was merely an average third-person shooter that happened to take place in snapshots of things I’ve already seen in a hundred Clint Eastwood or John Wayne westerns. So I, disappointed, will ride off like Shane into the sunset and chuck this game away at Boot Hill.

The Western might be dead in Hollywood, but it’s just getting started in video games. The built-in drama of the Old West seems tailor-made for game translation, from the hard-as-nails characters to the oft-imitated gunplay. Hey, the samurai gets a game almost every month, why leave his American counterpart, the outlaw cowboy, stranded in the gaming desert?

Rockstar Games has been desperately trying to develop a third pillar outside of Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne that will stick with gamers. Manhunt didn't cut it and Midnight Club just isn't popular enough. This time Rockstar sought success in the west...the old west.

Last year, the strange winds of business blew San Diego's Angel Studios into the hands of Rockstar, and the long-prophesied Red Dead Revolver was a leaf in the current. Once promised by Capcom, the game has been in what Hollywood calls "development hell" forever, where it probably had shelf space next to Kevin Costner's Open Range. Full of sagebrush and unshaven bad guys, it's a very arcade-like shooter that pits the violently orphaned Red against the dastardly varmints what killed his family.
