It's no secret that ever since it burst onto the scene back in June, the GamePro offices have fallen madly in love with Red Faction: Guerrilla. In all honestly, THQ could have swapped out the sledgehammers for rubber mallets and the sprawling mining colonies with Barbie Dream Houses; as long as it all blew up the same, you wouldn't find us complaining. Loaded with all of the content from the incendiary original release, not to mention some exemplary PC exclusives, Volition has struck gold with the definitive edition of the most explosive title of 2008.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is an in your face, balls to the wall, destroy everything in your path treat. With a ton of missions to complete, an entire planet to destroy, and online modes that will have you sitting in front of your television for hours upon hours, this game has it all. I know this has been said a ton of times before, but it holds true for this game; if Red Faction: Guerrilla doesn't get your blood pumping, check your pulse. Red Faction: Guerrilla should not be overlooked by anyone, period.

I can't recommend Red Faction Guerrilla highly enough and I haven't even touched on the excellent multiplayer part of the game. If you're looking for a fun game that allows you to blow stuff up in cool ways then there's not a better game than Red Faction Guerrilla. It's a fantastic game that raises the bar for the entire industry and well worth your $60.

Regardless of those shortcomings, Red Faction: Guerrilla is an essential game to play if only to see Volition's exemplary game design in action. Failing that, the sheer amount of fun derived from taking on an entire military yourself with some of the most over the top weaponry ever to find itself into a game should seal the deal.

It's become a rare thing for me to actually stop playing a game to call one of my friends and gush about something amazing that happened, or how much they need to play it when it comes out, but I did this countless times while playing Guerrilla (and probably annoyed quite a few people along the way). The game isn't perfect, but what it does right it does insanely well and it's easy to forgive some of its minor issues in favor of enjoying the hell out of the rollercoaster ride of maniacal action found within.

Final Thought? THQ and Volition should be commended for an outstanding game that not only compliments the series, however goes beyond its predecessors. With next generation graphics, brilliant gameplay and a story that actually makes you care, Red Faction: Guerrilla is an almost perfect game that takes us back to those classic games of the 90’s, however with modern soul and essence. Brilliantly addictive!

If Red Faction: Guerrilla was merely a war game, or if it was merely a demolition game, it probably wouldn’t be this great, but the seamless blending of both elements into the massive futuristic landscape of Mars with loads of vehicles and weapons, sinister enemy AI, territory acquisition, and morale balancing, makes this one of the most inventive, addictive, and guilt pleasures on my PlayStation 3 this year. For an explosive good time, join the Red Faction and help liberate Mars from the EDF…Guerrilla style.

Mars without Arnie in sight is a breath of fresh air and RFG delivers action, story, destruction and fantastic multiplayer with insane goals and addictive experience tallying in one smoothly done package. Geo Mod 2.0 is the best thing to happen to gaming, sandbox or otherwise and whilst there are sure to be imitators, you’ll never look at another so-called physics based shooter again in the same way. I highly recommend this game to everyone, no matter what the platform, 360, PS3 or PC.

Volition has re-branded the Red Faction franchise in a big way with Guerrilla, changing the series from a first person shooter, to one of the most enjoyable sandbox games on next-gen consoles today. Full of eye-blistering visuals, mind boggling destruction and a lengthy single player; it's one of the best surprises this year. I'm just waiting to get a hold of the ostrich hammer for some "foul play" online.

THQ and Volition have truly outdone themselves with Red Faction: Guerrilla. They have effectively “mined” the eight-year-old franchise and struck gaming gold, combining several recent yet tried–and-true gameplay mechanics with a spectacular physics engine, top-notch production values and a great story, resulting in a worthy (and easily the best ) sequel to the franchise as well as a highly original product in its own right. How often does that happen? For action-adventure and shooter fans looking for a fresh, solid and fun title to last them well into the summer, this is a day one, “must buy” purchase.

Without a doubt, Red Faction: Guerrilla is one of the best games that will hit this year. It's the complete package, and has enough calls back to the first game that it feels like a proper sequel, unlike the last game. Go buy it. Now.

After playing Red Faction: Guerilla I'm still not sure just what makes the EDF (Earth Defense Force) so evil, other than they like to shoot rebel Martian miners. And as Alec Mason, both my character and I seemed to quickly forget that we reluctantly joined the rebel Red Faction after witnessing the death of Mason's brother at the hands of the EDF. But you know what? It didn't really matter to me. I had so much fun destroying the EDF's outposts, intercepting convoys, and running amuck through EDF bases in tanks and construction mechs, that all I needed to know was that the EDF were the bad guys and the Red Faction the good guys. And did I mention the thrill of crushing a roadside checkpoint bunker under the weight of an enormous ore hauler?

A very solid single player offering, expansive multiplayer modes, and an offline party game that’s accessible to anyone, Red Faction: Guerrilla is an early candidate for one of the top games of the year. The destruction engine is a marvelous technical achievement, and really sets it apart from other games in the genre, and the diverse multiplayer offer up significant replay value. For anyone with an appetite for destruction, Red Faction: Guerrilla comes highly recommended.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
It is safe to say that Red Faction: Guerrilla has exceeded our expectations in almost every regard. While it is not a perfect game, it breaks a tremendous amount of new ground from a technical perspective and bundles in an enjoyable single-player experience with a solid multiplayer component. Red Faction: Guerrilla may not have the name recognition of Halo or Call of Duty, but it has enough depth of play to hold its own against any contenders.

In all, one of Red Faction: Guerrilla’s biggest strengths is that it’s simply a lot of fun to play. Smart design decisions such as the minimal impact of death (which will happen) are of great benefit in achieving this goal. As well, some of the larger structures will have you reloading and destroying it again and again, just to see how many ways you can bring a bridge or building to its knees. At the centre of it all, the games success revolves around simply how much fun it is. When playing, it always remains a pleasure and hours can be easily sunk without any trouble. The replayability aspect is heightened due to the opportunity to embark upon a mindless destruction rampage, which, ignoring the story, could keep you entertained for a good while. As the pace of the story is dictated at the player's own pace the game's lifespan is difficult to quantify, but if you go through it too quickly you will probably find yourself replaying, for the simple thrill of knocking down a monolithic tower with just a sledgehammer and what must be some incredibly beefy biceps.

By delivering a solid campaign mode, an incredibly vast open world, destructible environments and addictive multiplayer modes, THQ and Volition brings you a high quality game that you can’t miss. Bringing the Red Faction franchise to next-generation consoles might have took three years but the final result is astounding. There’s no doubt that THQ and Volition have put all their knowledge, energies and hearts into this project not only to please Red Faction fans who were disappointed by Red Faction II but also to captivate a whole new audience looking for the next great game. Red Faction Guerrilla’s unabashed destruction is so much fun that the lengthy load screens gave me an unfamiliar feeling of anxiety. I desperately wanted to move on to the next area and come up with a cool, entertaining way to execute a mission. But not because I cared about my dead brother or what he was fighting for. Forget vengeance. Forget liberty. The cheesy action movie story is background noise to the sound of 12 bombs crippling a skyscraper, tires tearing across a craggy Mars, and a sledgehammer smashing the skull of EDF infantry. Good times.

PlayStation 31UP
Guerrilla isn't a terribly deep game, but as a "summer blockbuster," it works just right. It doesn't expect you to get lost in a deep, engaging sci-fi world -- you're on a mission to Mars to watch stuff explode. A deeper story might have made it more enjoyable in some respects, but it might also have killed the momentum of the demolition action. As a view of a Martian colony rebellion, the experience feels lot more like something starring Arnold Schwarzenegger than a story penned by Heinlein, but sometimes, that's all you need.
90
Xbox 360GameSpy
Despite its lackluster storytelling, Red Faction: Guerrilla is a whole lot of fun to play, thanks to its meaty campaign and well-rounded multiplayer offerings. The game makes sure you have a good time blowing stuff up, and in this case, that's more than enough.

PlayStation 3Blend Games
I really wish the single-player campaign had been complete enough to measure up to the online offering. Still, even in the single-player, there's something about Guerrilla that turns me back to my ant-burning prepubescent phase. It's so much damn fun to bashing a building with a sledgehammer until it falls over, even if there's no reward whatsoever for doing so. The reasons that the game is enjoyable are basic but undeniable. It offers gleeful destruction with a minimum of technical issues and it's tough not to recommend it to a fan of the genre. In a crowded shooter market filled with bald-faced imitation, Guerrilla succeeds in setting itself apart.

Other than feeling a bit repetitive at times, Red Faction: Guerrilla does little wrong: the shooting and driving are good fun and I don’t have any complaints about the controls. Containing building destruction on a scale never seen before, this Mars is a fun place to be, and, if you like blowing things up, it’s unlikely that you’ll get bored with Volition’s impressive game any time soon.

Red Faction: Guerrilla's Martian sandbox might be a touch barren in places and the story and characters may border on the bland, but when there're so many different activities vying for your attention and so much to annihilate, it's impossible not to love it for all its unpretentious bombast. This is explosive, balls-to-the-wall action that makes no concessions in delivering the ultimate playground in which to wreak havoc. The almost limitless potential for reckless mayhem is what makes Guerrilla such an unashamedly fun game to play, which is why this is without a doubt the biggest summer blockbuster so far this year and consequently an essential purchase. Now go on, get your ass to Mars.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is fantastic. From the traditional rocket launcher to the old world sledgehammer to the sci-fi nano rifle, it’s action of a variety and level largely unseen. Unlike the previous Red Faction titles, there weren’t specific spots that were destructible; nearly everything is. Think of blocking pathways with rubble, ambushing a convey with lightning and landmines, or going a more traditional route of utilizing the cover system for some classic gunfights – there is plenty to do, and a lot to do it with. It is far from perfect – the missions could be more focused, the AI more varied, habitats more realistic – but to say I found myself seriously turned away by those things would be an exaggeration. There is way too much to enjoy here to pass it up. Highly recommended.

As you may have guessed we quite like Red Faction: Guerrilla. It is explosive fun throughout, but ultimately it is a one-trick pony. You ache for more regular and emotionally engaging cut-scenes that sink you deeper into the plight on Mars. You wonder what other cool mission tangents could have existed in the corners of the Red Planet where there isn’t something to blow up. And how finely tuned car-physics and a strong audio catalogue would have improved the experience. These elements are the ‘X’ factor which Red Faction lacks, but of which Volition seem to show little concern. This developer just wants you to have a planet-load of fun, and Red Faction: Guerrilla most certainly delivers on that.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a top game. A real departure from the previous entries in the series. The game attempts to meld the 3rd person action genre with a GTA style gameplay mechanic. It looks good, sounds good and is great fun to play. Sure the reduced draw distance is a shame and the clipping issues cause the odd jar but all in all the game is a technical marvel. So much destruction and freedom to enjoy. I have not enjoyed a Volition title so much since the second Red Faction title so this is complete double thumbs up from us here at Brutal Gamer. Go grab your copy now and feel the power of destruction!

Had Red Faction Guerrilla's campaign been at a consistent high throughout we might have had a real game of the year contender on our hands. Even with some flaws, though, Guerrilla is a great game that comes highly recommended, in no small part to some superb multiplayer game modes that should see the game gain quite a following. More importantly, blowing things up is cool, and no game lets you see the destruction caused better than Volition's latest.

It’s very difficult to say anything negative at all about Red Faction Guerrilla. Occasionally there’s pop up in the background, and missions that can get a little repetitive, but if that’s the kind of thing to put you off a game that’s chock-full of such delightful experiences, then you really don’t have a soul. From smacking your first wall with the sledge hammer, to running full speed through a military complex in a giant mech, like some kind of demented toddler at Lego Land, Red Faction: Guerrilla never ceases to excite or satisfy. It constantly rewards players throughout the single player campaign and always manages to introduce something new to change the way the game is played. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable adventure in an original and believable (if not exactly realistic) setting, and sets a totally new benchmark for technical achievement in a video game. Now go and blow something up already.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is the complete package – bombastic action, oodles of variety, heavy firepower, destruction on an immense scale and an open sandbox world that places no restrictions on where you can go or how you approach your objectives. The story, characters and location may lack the depth and detail of say GTA IV’s, but then this is an altogether different animal. This is videogaming popcorn; the equivalent of a massive summer blockbuster and by far the biggest one you’ll play this year. For sheer unpretentious, balls-out, action-packed entertainment you need look no further. Red Faction: Guerrilla is the game for anyone that loves to blow stuff up, which should be any human being with a pulse. So go on, what are you waiting for? Get your ass to Mars.

Red Faction: Guerrilla doesn't have a great narrative to drive the gameplay along, but when you're having as much as this it really isn't a major issue. What it does offer, in abundance, is the chance to have a lot of fun playing around with its brilliant destruction-based gameplay. Fans of the original will have been waiting for the glorious triumphant return of Red Faction, and in many ways it will surpass their expectations. Not only does it thrill and excite in a way that only pioneering games can, it sets the benchmark for any other developer who dares to say that their latest game features destructible environments. Before they dare do that, they ought to check out Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Its story might be a little lacking, but that shouldn't be enough to deter anyone from picking up Red Faction: Guerrilla. It flew under the radar for most gamers, but is an experience that shouldn't be missed. Releasing in a strange spot between inFamous and Prototype, it's going to be easy to forget about Guerrilla.

Red Faction: Guerrilla takes the franchise to a while new level with some of the most entertaining gameplay we've encountered in some time. Sure the graphics and audio aren't the best we've seen on the PS3, and the storyline is a little thin as well, but as a game this gets top marks. The single player campaign is a good length (around 15 hours give or take) but the multi-player could have you playing for that amount of time several times over. This is one for action fans to add to their collection.

PlayStation 3PSX Extreme
To conclude, we liked Red Faction: Guerrilla quite a bit. It's the Martian equivalent to inFamous and that's a surprise to us. Guerrilla's gameplay is solid and enjoyable, boasting fun mechanics that really draw you into the game, especially with the amount of destruction you're capable of. It's also got an extremely impressive physics engine that calculates your destruction in a way we've yet to see. The mission structure may be a bit repetitive, but that's to be expected in open-ended games such as this, so it's a flaw that comes with the territory. Our biggest complaints are the lack of a decent story, not enough character and vehicle variety, and not enough diversity in the gameplay. We'd say they're small complaints, and that Red Faction: Guerrilla is surely worth a purchase.

Was soll ich groß sagen?

A seemingly generic third person shooter that is suddenly lifted up to greatness by the superb destructibility and explosive nature of the gameplay. You can forget guns when you have detonators and rockets to play with instead and the feeling of satisfaction when a mighty edifice comes crashing down is second to none. The online may suffer from being a bit shallow but as a package this game ticks all the right boxes and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a long term challenge or a few short term thrills. Stand back and watch this game go.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a great game. Volition did many things right, but they came up short in some areas such as the subpar story, mediocre visuals, and the less than memorable characters. Even though Red Faction has plenty of flaws, most are over shadowed by a good and lengthy single-player experience, great multiplayer options, and the environment’s destructibility. Summers are usually slow in the gaming business, but once in a while we get a great game. Red Faction: Guerrilla is one of those games, so don’t miss your chance to stay inside and enjoy your summer!

You'll end up hearing that "thunk" a lot in Red Faction: Guerrilla, but you'll never get tired of it because its deep, crunchy sound is tied so intrinsically to the satisfying visual destruction you see. Guerrilla's gameplay is similar--many of the missions may feel like they're at the same, loud, all-out pace, but when devastation is this well presented, it's difficult not to get swept along by its primal energy. Red Faction: Guerrilla mixes a long and involving single-player campaign with a fun and satisfying online segment, with both adding up to a game that proves that a little chaos (or in this case, a lot) can be a positive thing.

While it’s true some of the tasks open to you in Red Faction: Guerrilla can feel a little repetitious, even laborious, they’re vastly outweighed by the sheer fun you can have taking the land and EDF apart. The story’s cliché but frankly anything that gives a guy like Mason the excuse to blow up almost the entire infrastructure of a planet in the name of ‘freedom’ can’t be a bad thing, and luckily it isn’t as long as you weren’t expecting an Oscar nominated script. Red Faction has come a long way from those miner tunnels from the original adventure, and the Geo-Mod engine has matured in a spectacular fashion. Red Faction: Guerrilla is non-stop destruction when things heat up; visually and in the action itself. For fans of the sandbox world who really enjoy a toolset of mayhem, you’d best acquaint yourself with the nearest Red Faction recruiter you can find.

Red Faction Guerrilla is a refreshing and very enjoyable sandbox game that offers an alternative to the Saints Rows, GTAs and Godfathers out there. Don't expect anywhere near the insight and polish found in GTA IV, but do expect a rollicking good time.

The open world gameplay best resembles Mercenaries 2, but Red Faction overcomes the many technical hurdles that kept that game in mediocrity with sound gunplay and a polished experience. The only detriments holding Guerrilla back are the repetitive mission types, unimaginative art direction, and a detached story — the side missions could have benefited from tangential narratives. Regardless, the grand scale of destruction makes the thrill of laying waste to everything on the planet a must-play experience.

There's more than enough content to get your money's worth, especially if you don't need to be told by a game what to do, and can create fun and mayhem in a sandbox world by yourself.

What Half Life did with the crowbar, Red Faction does with the sledgehammer making the two entwined forever. The Geo-Mod 2.0 engine is really a technical marvel to witness and gives Red Faction a fresh next-gen feeling. Figuring out new ways to make buildings fall down is most of the fun you'll have when you approach the controller and sit down with Red Faction each and every time. Red Faction had the opportunity to make a huge splash and make its mark on the open world scene, but unfortunately, the designs of the world, vehicles and characters are too bland and generic to be memorable for long. What this game will be remembered for is the ability to bring down the rain and watch buildings as they buckle from extreme destruction, all the while having a huge grin across your face.

There’s so much about Red Faction: Guerrilla that is innovative and goes above and beyond your run-of-the-mill game, it’s disappointing that this title didn’t garner a higher score. The fact is that modern gamers want an engaging story line along with their action and that just isn’t present here. The absolutely phenomenal multiplayer offerings as well as the lengthy single player experience make for an excellent experience nonetheless. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait another seven years to lead the oppressed of Mars to victory!

Faszinierend.

A nice take on some pretty standard plot elements. The game combines solid ideas in a way that is easy to understand and utilize. And the developer did a very nice job in terms of the game’s presentation and pacing. There are a few missteps here and there that can fluctuate the difficulty within a mission (the AI can be a bit iffy, and if you work through a building demolition fast enough, you can avoid much more trouble than if you dawdle), but overall, this is a game worth checking out.

Even though Red Faction: Guerrilla could have made a few changes and spiced up the game world, it is still a lot of fun to play through. With the multiplayer added into the mix you will likely get enough action out of Guerrilla until the next sandbox action game is released. I'm glad Violation returned to the Red Faction series, sci-fi open world shooters aren't too common in the marketplace. After all the super-hero styled sandboxed games, Red Faction: Guerrilla use of the red planet offers up something new for gamers to jump into. Rent, or Buy, you can't really go wrong picking up Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a solid game. I can see why my console colleagues had so many good things to say about it. The engine is excellent, and even as I wrapped up my last game, I found myself hoping that other companies would make use of what the engine has to offer. As long as you have an active Internet connection at all times, this is the game for anyone who wants to be immersed in a righteous guerrilla struggle.

The sandbox aspect of this game along with a strong story and the ability to destroy almost everything makes for a very fun game and while there are some frustrating flaws these are not enough to ruin an otherwise very fun game. So if you enjoy open games and want to be able to destroy every building and vehicle and really change things then this is well worth picking because there is a lot of things in this game that you won't find in many other games.

But, even with a somewhat listless game world, Red Faction: Guerrilla is an enjoyable game. Surprisingly, it has a lot of life to it. For a game built largely around the “blow shit up” gimmick, you’d expect it to lose steam after a few hours, but Guerrilla stays entertaining through most of the game, only tapering slightly toward the conclusion. While it has weak points, most notably taking the open world structure that many other games have utilized and failing to improve upon it in significant ways, it nonetheless succeeds because, well, it’s fun. It might not be the most original game you’ll ever play, and some of the design decisions might leave you scratching your head, but even still, Guerrilla provides an entertaining experience from start to finish.

What’s more disappointing about Volition’s effort is the rocky mission design, bland artistic style, weak plot and anemic character development, which shifts too much focus to the element of destruction to maintain a level of excitement. Its enjoyable gunplay mechanics along with the weapons and opportunity for tearing apart structures carry over into the online space, where Volition has built an impressive multiplayer suite that includes stat tracking, unlocks, and a number of game modes that focus on flattening buildings. While the game may not do everything right, it’s your best bet for free-form demolition and unpretentious entertainment.

Volition could have stuck with the same tired first person shooter format, as seen recently in the disappointing Killzone 2. Instead by taking a risk, the resulting dividend is a massive success. This is probably the most fun Gamestyle has had in such a sandbox title since the fantastic Grand Theft Auto 3.

Completing the same objectives grows repetitive and the game features drab scenery, but collecting scrap metal from destroyed objects and mining ore to purchase upgrades kept us busy for hours. In addition, an equally enjoyable 16 person multiplayer component lets everyone use jetpacks with unique abilities (super speed, invisibility, sonic blasts), as well as an offline party mode where players attempt to cause the most damage in a limited amount of time. Ultimately, the lack of mission variety cost Red Faction a higher score, but it's still an explosively fun time.

At the end of the day, that’s really what it comes down to for Red Faction: Guerrilla too – the fun. Sure, the story may be flimsier than a wet Weetabix and the game world is as bland as eating said cereal, but anything that results in comparisons to getting drunk with a Transformer can’t be all that bad. On the contrary; the final product is actually an awful lot of fun despite the flaws and it’s refreshing to see a third person shooter that tries to be more than just a Gears of War clone for once. We also can’t wait to take a look at the PC release when that comes out eventually.

Despite some niggles, I have had - and continue to have - a lot of fun with Red Faction Guerrilla. Volition's game is an excellent and worthwhile resurrection of an old franchise. One hopes its success results in Volition returning to an extremely well-loved space shooter series.

Violition finally did it. They delivered the ultimate destruction engine but I feel as if they’ve released a kick-ass sandbox yet forgot to build a true game one can embrace at the same time. Luckily enough, the pace is good and they introduce ‘the twist’ just at the right time which kept me going until the end still feeling rewarded. They should also have invested a bit more in a decent AI engine and some proper game flow because the missions are easy and just get repetitive, a chore and even borderline boring. However, the multiplayer alone merits the purchase of this title and will have me grabbing back to this for a long time. On to Red Faction 4 please!

Red Faction: Guerilla does what it promised: those that love bashing stuff and watching buildings collapse will have a ton of fun with this game. Mars is a large area that can be traversed with different vehicles and the destruction possibilities also offer a nice addition to the multiplayer. Although the singleplayer mode is quite long it does tend to get repetitive after a while.

Bottom line; if a decent, demolition-oriented action game is what you seek, chances are you won't be disappointed with this game. Don't expect much beyond that.

Things can become a bit repetitive early on in the game, but pushing through until you open up the Badlands and beyond is a real treat and well worth the effort. There are annoying factors to deal with such as simple AI, overwhelming odds (and a serious lack of good armour) and the daily grind from Safehouses to mission points (the play areas are really pretty big), but the fun you can have with the Geo-Mod 2.0 tools and Havok physics make up for this in a big way. A deeper storyline wouldn't have gone astray, but as it is I get to live out my Total Recall fantasies of traversing the surface of Mars without my eyes popping out of my head, so Red Faction is a winner in my book - well worth the trip to Mars.

Ultimately Guerrilla is unsatisfying, only because it doesn't take its own ideas far enough. What is there is not bad, and if there is blame that needs to be apportioned it can probably be laid at the feet of whoever was responsible for not giving Volition enough time to get where they might have been headed: to a more interesting world, to a thicker plot, to more clever AI, etc. Red Faction: Guerrilla is the game for people who are either perfectly satisfied with above-average shooters or are lovers of the might-have-been.

Indeed, Mars ultimately fails to mean a whole lot - the tale of the colonists’ struggle for independence made humdrum through limp cutscenes, seeded through the world by flatly written news reports and AI barks. And though this little diminishes the delight of knocking a cooling tower down with a singularity bomb, or watching several tons of concrete crumple into the face of an EDF lackey, it does stunt the dramatic significance these events hold. Red Faction plays its hand early, letting you blow a building to pieces in the first few minutes of the game. Though the explosions scale with progress, and the act of detonation continues to be a giddy pleasure, Mars could do with a thicker atmosphere.

For my liking, Red Faction Guerrilla has too many inconstancies to be considered grade-A material, but then maybe it was never designed to be that way. In-between the frustration of being penned into a rock face by hordes of enemy vehicles, the random nature of the AI has its charms. It leaves you entering a mission not knowing quite what will happen. Most likely you’ll just ram your way into a building, take the goods and fly back out of there, but along the way something goofy will happen that either have you thanking your lucky stars, or tearing your hair out in anger. I just don’t know whether I like it or loathe it.

But despite the series’ shift into open-world, Guerrilla is far from a revolution. Volition’s Geo-Mod 2.0 tech is leagues ahead of anything that we’ve seen previously, but you can’t help but think that Guerrilla is ultimately little more than a glorified tech demo. It’s smashing good fun – that you can’t deny – but unfortunately, it’s also a bit of a one-trick pony.

As the title indicates, Volition has shown some definite improvement in their open-world imagining since the problems that plagued Saint's Row 2. As they come to terms with the strengths and weaknesses in their new open-only policy, hopefully they are taking their time to learn from the criticisms for each title and we can expect great things from them once again into the future!

Red Faction: Guerilla has more hits than misses. Underdeveloped and flat characters, a generic story that disappears through the majority of the game and a few issues with the GPS system and enemy AI hurt the game, but its highlights like Geo-Mod 2.0, big action set pieces and satisfying weapons elevate the game.
