When I first saw news of this game. Being the typical hard-core console gamer. I was amazed, as months went by I followed the progress of Red Faction, and when the day came, I was broke, no money whatsoever. Luckily for me, my birthday was just around the corner. It was on that very day some very nice co-workers surprised me with a copy of Red Faction, This game has forever changed the way I look at First Person Shooters, no longer do I see them as the typical murder simulator (cough&likely change the way you look at them to. I highly recommend this A+ title. So what are you waiting for? Join the Revolution!

THQ?s Red Faction gives action gamers one of the most thrilling rides yet on the PS2. With its innovative Geo-Mod technology that allows players to blast away the environments as well as enemies, and an awesome (and lengthy) storyline, this game packs in plenty of thrills. Including visual stylings from recent sci-fi classics like Aliens, The Abyss, and Total Recall, and varied gameplay featuring multiple vehicles to pilot, timed tasks, and some tricky stealth maneuvers.

Red Faction is the PS2 GoldenEye. Not in the sense that the game is modeled exactly the same, but rather, it’s THE FPS gamers will fall head over heels in love with. Whether it be the single-player game or the multiplayer modes, Red Faction delivers the goods. The story is interwoven seamlessly with the action, and the highly touted Geo-Mod engine delivers the highest level of destruction possible. Whether it be a thin windowpane or a mile-long rock wall, if you have the tools, you can blow through it. I was also thoroughly impressed with the AI. The computer opponents flee, seek cover, and even try to trick you by saying, “I’m unharmed!” With the power Red Faction delivers, the game does suffer from extensive loading. Other than this subtle annoyance, however, Red Faction lives up to the hype as an innovative, compelling, and completely immersive FPS.

I have been excited about this game since day one, and I'm so glad it's turned out well. When I first touched the controller and blew up giant walls, vehicles and whatnot, it just flipped a switch in me. Red Faction is very solid piece of code that, despite some control issues, is extremely fun. The tension of this game builds and builds as it becomes harder and harder, and each time you feel that it's about to end, another set of tasks throw you into more turmoil. The end part of the game is definitely hard (I played on the medium level of difficulty), but in the vein of old-school style of games, you truly earn the ending.

If you have any interest at all in upcoming titles for PlayStation 2, it's a sure bet you've encountered a healthy share of hype regarding Red Faction. Its Geo-Mod engine promised to give players the heretofore unavailable ability to absolutely obliterate objects in the environment – be it windows, walls, or whatever. Both anticipation and expectation for the game have been unbelievably high. So let's get the big question out of the way first. Does Red Faction live up to the hype? Yes.

In the end Red Faction is among the many Playstation 2 titles that deserves a look. It's got a great 'A-movie' story, with excellent voice acting and interesting dialogue, an amazingly innovative GEO-MOD feature that lets the gamer destroy any part of the environment, and on top of that a single-player mode that lasts damn near 20 hours! I highly suggest purchasing Red Faction for the good of your soul, you'll be extremely glad you did, because this game turned out to be one of the best FPS titles available. Even though Volition started off the PS2 journey rough (*ahem* Summoner *ahem*), they delivered one fine piece of software that no PS2 owner should be without.

Overall Red Faction is a really solid game with smooth control, an engrossing story, incredible atmosphere and action that moves along at a good pace. It has a very strong single-player mode and is a really fun multiplayer game. The minor flaws here and there do little to drag it from the top of the heap of story-driven console first-person shooters and it is a shining example of how to combine a whole pile of essential ingredients to make a really outstanding and enjoyable finished product. Time to go out and sample it for yourself!

So we're left with a remarkably fun game whose technical, story, and to some extent weapon and vehicle potential aren't implemented to the fullest. All of these things, while impressive as they are, weren't designed to be taken as a game in and of themselves, but are instead compliments to the total experience. It's therefore not a physics simulation where the entire objective is to blow walls up, nor is it a story-driven quest, nor a vehicular game. It's an intense as all hell action game with a whole lot of extras. Even as a standard first person shooter, without the vehicles, Geo-Mods and such, the game would still be good because of one simple and factor, paramount above all others...Gameplay. It's all about the gameplay, and when you crank this baby to hard, or God forbid, im-freaking-possible, you'll find the gameplay to keep you going for hours piled upon days, piled upon weeks.

Welcome to Mars, where violence has erupted at a corporate mining colony outside the jurisdiction of the Earth government. This lawless environment is the setting of Volition's Red Faction, a first-person shooter from a company known most recently for Summoner, an innovative 3D role-playing game for the PlayStation 2 and PC. In Red Faction, Volition attempts to combine the best elements from notable first-person shooters such as Valve's Half-Life, Rare's Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007, and Raven's Soldier of Fortune into one game. It's heavy on story, has a wide variety of tasks for you to accomplish, and involves combat that's visceral and strategic at the same time. Although Red Faction rarely outstrips the games it draws inspiration from, the fact that there are times when it shows them up at all is pretty impressive.

Overall, this game is wonderfully constructed from beginning to end, and in spite of some long load times, a game that isn't terribly long, and some anemic multiplayer options, you are getting one very nice game and one that should have an even better sequel. With such potential, there is little doubt in my mind.

Den fråga som alla kommer att vilja ha svar på är naturligtvis: Är det bättre än Half-Life? Nej, det är det inte. Det är lite nyhetens behag att kunna skjuta sönder väggarna och deformera allt du ser omkring dig, men efter ett tag tänker man knappt på det. Det finns väldigt få passager som man verkligen måste spränga sig igenom väggen för att kunna komma vidare. Och utöver detta så är det inte så mycket som vi inte sett förut. Missförstå mig rätt, Red Faction är kanonbra och jag rekommenderar er alla att köpa det, men det är inget nytt Half-Life. Half-Life var så revolutionerande när det kom att det lär dröja innan en shooter får samma mottagande. Kanske krävs det ett Unreal 2 eller Doom 3 innan vi ser samma reaktion? Slutbetyget blir i alla fall väl godkänt och man kan inte låta bli att längta lite efter moddarna som förhoppningsvis dyker upp snart.

Но при этом завязка Red Faction ничем исключительным не выделяется, разве что близким родством сюжетам верхувеновского “Вспомнить все” и старого доброго Crusader: No Regret. Некая корпорация, на которую мы имеем честь гнуть спину, тщательно скрывает тот факт, что в процессе горных разработок на Марсе массово гибнут люди. Точнее — мутируют и мрут. В самом начале рабочего дня вы становитесь свидетелем стычки между охранником и шахтером. Шахтер взял верх, и все остальные охранники открыли пальбу. “А-а-а! Наших бьют!” — завопили все. Вот так и началась революция. Гляжу на логотип игры, и вместо кирки мне чудится там молот... Это все воздействие красного фона, наверное.

Red Faction is a great game that takes the time tested first person shooter formula and spices it up using the fantastic new Geo-Mod engine. There really is nothing quite like shooting the ground out from underneath your opponent. This is a solid game that easily overcomes its few flaws.

Another plus is that Red Faction ships with a powerful editor called the RED Editor. You can bet that once the mod community gets ahold of this, they’ll be cranking out some spectacular user-created levels. Red Faction isn’t god’s gift to the first-person-shooter genre, but it’s got more tricks up its sleeve than a three-card monte dealer. And it sure beats just sitting around your goddamn jail cell waiting for Half-Life 2.

Would I buy Red Faction for myself or a friend as a Christmas present this year? Sure. Would I love it as a multiplayer game? You don’t have to ask. I already do. But as a single-player game and story, it could stand some improvement in a few parts.

Nieder mit den Ausbeutern, fairer Lohn für freie Arbeiter! Red Faction hat es mit seiner tollen Story tatsächlich geschafft, mich in einen flammenden PC-Kämpfer für die Sache der Unterdrückten zu machen. Die revolutionäre Stimmung kommt überraschend gut rüber und bügelt die Schwächen bei Grafikeffekten, Gegnervielfalt und Spieldauer weitgehend aus. Der Actionpart ist grundsolide: Die Waffen erlauben vielfältige Vorgehensweisen, die KI der Herrschenden ist herausfordernd. Vor allem sind die Levels interessant aufgebaut. Deutlich mehr habe ich von der Geo-Mod-Technik erwartet. Anfangs ist es noch spaßig, sich durchs Erdreich zu sprengen oder nach heftigen Kämpfen in Ruinen zu stehen – aber Ersteres wird schnell langweilig, Letzteres gibt’s viel zu selten. Inhaltlich bedeutet Red Faction zwar nicht den Umsturz im Genre – eine echte Empfehlung für Freunde unkomplizierter und vor allem spannender Ballerorgien ist es allemal.

Red Faction, in spite of its flaws, is a well-executed and entertaining First Person Shooter. Not too long, not too short, there’s plenty of material to destroy, with a few puzzles intermixed along the way to keep the storyline interesting. The storyline itself isn’t the greatest, but it is very well done compared to what this genre of game usually sees and the high quality graphics back that story up very well.

The gameplay is pretty standard, but there are a few innovations that make Red Faction unique. You can often preview upcoming areas using video monitors, and an excellent "auto-aiming" feature makes it much easier to pick off bad guys. Also, I really like how the game is NOT broken up into individual missions, but instead feels like one continuous journey. The audio is first-rate, with pulse-pounding music and official-sounding announcements over the intercoms. Enemy guards call for backup, and beg for mercy when shot. You can save your place at any time. There's a much-ballyhooed multiplayer mode, but I didn't find it to be anything special. Overall, I wouldn't call Red Faction revolutionary, but it's very solid all around.

Red Faction is a great game that could have benefited from more polish. The PC version of Red Faction will inevitably receive add-ons and customizable player maps, skins, and deathmatch arenas that the PS2 will never see, so players may want to wait for the best version available. Make no mistake, this title is still very fun to play, but it could have been even better. The potential is certainly there and the developers came so close to fully realizing it that it's upsetting. It's like when you're watching your favorite basketball team play an important game -- you feel about 100 times worse if they lose by 1 to 2 points than if they lose by 15 to 30. The same can be said about Red Faction.

Ju mer jag spelar Red Faction, desto mer tycker jag om det. Spelet förnyar sig hela tiden med nya miljöer, nya vapen och nya utmaningar. Det blir helt enkelt aldrig tråkigt, och det är ett betyg så gott som något.

So as we draw to the inevitable conclusion what can we surmise on Red Faction? Firstly, it's fun. A lot of fun in fact, though nothing too deep and nothing too innovative. The Geo-Mod technology will keep players amused for a time, though the plot is weaker than it should be and the underlying technology underused. Fans of the genre will no doubt find many hours of gameplay in it however, just don't expect this to be the 'next level'.

Red Faction ist kein Spiel, das Innovationspreise erhält. Auch die Geo-Mod Engine ändert daran nichts, da man diese sinnvoller hätte einbauen können. Spaß macht die Hatz über den Mars und durch die Minen aber schon, gerade weil alles so unkompliziert ist und man richtig die Sau rauslassen kann. Rücksicht muss man auf nichts und niemanden nennen, kleinere Fahrzeug- und Rätseleinlagen lockern das Geschehen zusätzlich noch auf.

While Red Faction flourished on the PlayStation 2, it faces a bigger challenge on the PC, due to the amount of competition in the first-person shooter genre. As a result, it doesn’t fair as well. That’s not to say that Red Faction isn’t a solid game, it most certainly is, but besides the Geo-Mod engine and vehicular combat, Red Faction doesn’t present enough ingenuity to warrant a higher grade or a Gamers Choice Award. A couple of years ago, Red Faction would have been a stellar title but now, it’s simply a very good one.

En somme voici un FPS des plus sympathiques même si en dehors de l'excellente campagne qu'il propose, le mode multijoueur s'avère quant à lui assez décevant. Le moteur de Volition offre bien entendu un grand intérêt à ce shooter et lui permet de mettre en avant un aspect assez novateur dont personne ne se plaindra. Un titre que l'on sera tenté de dévorer d'une seule traite tant son univers se veut soigné et palpitant.

Voor wie op zoek is naar een nieuwe shooter of gewoon een degelijke titel in het genre zoekt, is Red Faction zeker een aanrader.

Red Faction is an accomplished shooter--it deserves a look from fans of the genre, as well as from those who've been impressed with Volition's other achievements.

Mit der Geo-Mod-Engine hätte man eine Menge anstellen können - in Red Faction ist sie oft nur Selbstzweck. Was soll ich mit den tollsten Kratern und Löchern, wenn sich der spielerische Nutzen in engen Grenzen hält? Von einem gelegentlichen Geheimraum einmal abgesehen, resultiert die große Zerstörungsorgie in Munitionsmangel und sonst gar nichts. Die Gegner jedenfalls kümmert es herzlich wenig. Das geht sogar so weit, dass ich einen Wachturm genüsslich in seine Bestandteile zerbombe und der darin stationierte Soldat aus dem Trümmerhaufen munter weiter auf mich ballert. Wenn die Aufmachung nicht ganz so spartanisch wäre und wenn die Gegner wenigstens den Ansatz von Vielfalt erkennen ließen, könnte man darüber ja noch hinwegsehen. So aber bleibt Red Faction "nur" ein konventioneller Shooter, dem der gewisse Tick Originalität fehlt. Action-Fans dürfen dennoch die spielbare Demo auf der Heft-CD/DVD ausprobieren, Wunderdinge sollten Sie von der roten Fraktion aber nicht erwarten.

It's not often I fall in love with a game at first sight (I think Street Fighter II Champion Edition was the last one), but when I saw this on demo at CompUSA a few months ago, I just knew I had to have it. On the surface it looked just like another run of the mill Doom or Quake clone, but underneath it was so much more than that. With an immersive story line, intelligent AI, cool weapons, and some new gaming technology called the Geo-mod engine, I soon would find myself hopelessly addicted to this new entity called Red Faction.

Red Faction is a montage of innovation and disappointment. It brings to the table a mixed feast generously laced with Geo-Mod fun and decent gameplay, but the difficult control and platform jumping makes it harder to swallow. Still, this is one of few genuinely fun and exhilarating shooters out for the PS2 and is worth a good look.

Ultimately, Red Faction for the PC is a fine FPS with plenty of action and intense gameplay, even if it is derivative, too short and a tad uninspired. As an avid FPS fan, I recommend it to anybody who has a taste for fast-paced, gun-based warfare.

Red Faction delivers one of the most satisfying single and multiplayer gaming experiences on the N-Gage to date in addition to being one of the most impressive first-person-shooters made portable. The only thing holding it back from being a must-buy is its touchy controls, and slightly steep learning curve. Those looking for some intense action, and are not afraid of a little challenge owe it to themselves to check out this memorable game.

Över lag är Red Faction ett lyckat actionspel. Grafiken och ljudet gör vad de ska för att förmedla upplevelsen och historien är tillräcklig för att hålla spelet levande. Däremot saknas botar i flerspelarläget, vilket är oursäktligt och dessutom konstigt eftersom det fanns i PlayStation2-versionen. Även om vi sett det mestaförut är det fartfyllt, vanebildande och roligt.

Quand certains arborent une faucille et un marteau, d’autres se pavanent fièrement avec une pioche. Il en faudrait peu pour trouver la chose risible, mais il est des sujets avec lesquels on ne doit pas rire, surtout quand la victime se trouve être attendue comme une révolution (prolétaire) après que Volition, heureux papa de la faction rouge, ait promis aux joueurs monts et merveilles avec un nom un seul : Geomod. C’est l’heure de la lutte finale pour Red Faction, l’heure de rendre des comptes, alors faut-il ou pas rejoindre la révolte ?

Red Faction for N-Gage plays a little like the early PSone shooters. It's got similar graphics (polygon characters, pixelated backgrounds, etc.), similar quality music and typical first-person shooter sound effects. The controls are efficient at first but quickly fall apart when anything exciting happens. Not your best bet for the N-Gage. Wait for something superior to get your first-person shooter fix.

Au final, Red faction n' est pas vraiment la révolution annoncée, malgré quelques bonnes idées, ce jeu est un doom like solo assez classique, qui souffre d'une durée de vie vraiment trop courte (comptez 8 heures pour un manchot, et 3 pour un hardcore gamer, si tant est que les hardcore gamers aient des macs), mais qui pâtira de la déception qu'il cause. On ne manquera pas de comparer Red Faction à Star Trek: Elite Force, et ca fait forcément très mal au titre des petits gars de chez Volition. Une petite note d' espoir subsiste cependant, car des kits de développement sont sortis sur PC afin de faire des Mods pour Red Faction, et on peut esperer que quelques bonnes choses en résultent. Bref, on réflechira à deux fois avant de s'acheter Red Faction, surtout vu le tarif prohibitif des jeux en import à la Fnac.

Red Faction is an old-school shooter with a shiny new coat of paint and a few innovative features. It stays loyal to the original game, while adapting it to work within the confines of portable technology. FPS fans will definitely find some satis-Faction here.

I had fun with Red Faction. Although the story never really escapes the confines of the FPS genre, the fast pacing, the great graphics, and the intense action keep it interesting. Even better, it's devoid of the pubescent, Duke Nukem attitude most games of this type have lately. There are surprisingly few "I just killed you so now I'm going to say something clever" lines, which makes Parker feel a little more vulnerable. He doesn't enjoy all this killing. He doesn't want to be doing it, he just wants to live. He's just a man with a man's courage.

Le premier FPS du N-Gage ne fera pas date. Son gameplay replonge dans le passé obscur du doom-like (tuer, bouton, porte, tuer) mais c'est surtout sa maniabilité grossière qui fait tâche et rend le jeu peu agréable. A voir pour les amateurs de FPS qui souhaitent jouer dans le métro.

Sometimes I start playing a game and it isn’t until I’m half-done with it that I realize I just don’t like it. At that point, I have to beat the game because I’ve gotten so far in it and I would feel like I wasted my time if I didn’t. That was pretty much my entire reason for playing through Red Faction. I picked up the game used recently because I loved playing through its sequel and I was left wanting more. As you can probably guess, the experience wasn’t nearly the same.

Red Faction would probably be something of a revelatory title to a completely green fledgling gamer who's picked up the N-Gage as a first games machine, but I think we can safely say there aren't too many of them. Hardcore FPS fans looking for an engaging shooter might do well to wait and see what else turns up, but at the moment there's literally no alternative.

But the opaque environments of single player mode, along with the oddly distracting music and the regardlessly disgusting controls, cancel out most of Red Faction's high points. Combine those with the surrealistically slow mid-action loading times that crop up whenever Parker enters a new area (which occurs about every 4-7 minutes), and you have the makings of a rental at best. Head over to Blockbuster if you're curious to experience blasting through a virtual wall, or you have an urge to check out the predecessor of the recently-released Red Faction 2. Otherwise, avoid this game like its conceptual plague, for there exist far better Playstation 2 first-person shooters to play.

Red Faction isn't a bad game; it's just so derivative of other shooters (even mediocre ones) that it's hard to know which part of the game, if any, is worth recommending. As a single player game it's outdone ten times over by titles like Deus Ex and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. As a multiplayer game it's shamed by Quake III and Unreal Tournament. Even in terms of sheer game for the money, it's quickly outstripped by SiN: Gold. Graphically, Red Faction is among the best, but not quite at the top of the heap.

Red Faction is a gritty and apocalyptic first-person shooter that originally appeared on the PlayStation 2 and PC in 2001, and now, several years later, it's the first of its kind for Nokia's fledgling N-Gage. While it certainly shows off what the system is capable of, that doesn't mean that it is impressive on its own. Featuring clunky controls, choppy animation, and a subpar frame rate, this reworking of a great game isn't one that you'd want to have with you on a desert island.

Man går, rundar ett hörn, en fiende genererar en röstsampling, man dödar fienden. Och detta i fula, grå och tråkiga miljöer. Kort sagt: Red Faction till N-Gage sällar sig till en procentuellt stor familj dåliga spel till den alltmer tveksamma konsolen.
