Renegade Legion: Interceptor

First impressions are good. Inside the box is a series of cards showing the statistics and technical readouts of all the ships. Although it is very similar to the boardgame, which I play regularly, it has lost something in its transition to silicon and plastic. It keeps all the elements of the original and handles the tedious number crunching but just doesn't have the same atmosphere as sitting down and playing with your mates. A good game, but I can only recommend it to strategy fans or people with no friends.

Ship-to-ship combat in space; sequential turns coupled with simultaneous execution make this product reminiscent of early space simulations, but it provides an enjoyable interlude.

Auf den ersten Blick läuft einem bei "Interceptor" das taktische Wässerchen aus den zuckenden Mundwinkeln. Ganz nette Grafik, und eine tolle SF-Atmosphäre machen richtig Lust auf eine strategische Auseinandersetzung. Spielt man aber erst einmal voller Vorfreude, machen sich die ersten Schwächen des Programms bemerkbar. Es ist ja wirklich nett, daß man für siegreiche Kämpfe Punkte bekommt, aber warum der Spieler diese Punkte nicht benutzen kann, um seine Schiffe zu verbessern, ist mir schleierhaft. Außerdem schlafft das Spiel später mangels Abwechslung ganz schön ab.

Senast som SSI gav sig på att göra ett science fiction-baserat rollspel, var det Buck Rogers som fick bilda underlag. Den här gången är det FASA:s Renegade Legion-serie som fått stå modell. Tidigare FASA-titlar som det gjorts datorupplagor av har faktiskt blivit mycket bra (Battletech, Mechwarrior). Tyvärr kan man knappast säga samma sak om Interceptor, ett veritabelt bottennapp för SSI (efter succén med Eye of the Beholder och allt...). Interceptor är väl i och för sig inte helt värdelöst, problemet är bara att jag inte lyckats hitta några större förtjänster med det. Det är trögjobbat, oinspirerat, långsamt och har en grafik som eventuellt hade betraktats som bra i PC:ns barndom 1981.
