Resident Evil 2: Dual Shock Version

In short, Capcom has written the book on how to make a sequel once again. RE2 is an absolute winner and represents the pinnacle of the survival horror genre on Sony's 32-bit machine and the PC. Games like RE2 come along at most once a year. When they do, adventure and horror fans alike owe it to themselves to be in line. The horror has just begun.

The overall gameplay structure is enriched by a second quest that is linked to the original, and it explains everything that the first quest didn't. The second quest might be a little tougher at first, but that changes quickly enough and you are on the same wavelength as before. The final boss is too easy, but that doesn't mean you're gonna get it that easily. The other bosses in the game are at least a little tougher and should be able to keep you ready and alert. It is good to be scared.

Hardcore Resident Evil fans have more than a few reasons to check out the Nintendo 64 version of the game and, for those of you who have never played it for PlayStation or PC, it's a must-have. So what are you waiting for? The zombies are getting restless.

But at the end of the day there are two things you should ask yourself before rushing out to buy this wickedly essential game. Firstly: have you played the PlayStation version through already? Secondly: are you a poof when it comes to a bit of blood and guts? If the answer to either is 'yes', you should give Resident Evil 2 a miss. If, on the other hand, you appreciate quality adventure games, like a good scare and don't mind spilling a bit of claret along the way, this is the game for you. Buy it and scream.

Resident Evil 2 is a masterpiece and will definitely make you pee in your pants more than once, but you wont get much replay after everything is seen and done. I DEFINITLY recommend renting this game, if not buying it just because of the fantastic experience that you will get from playing it through with each character and letting the story unfold before your eyes. All in all, the most scary and fantastic single player game for the N64.

Au final, Resident Evil 2 sur N64 reste une simple adaptation de sa version PSX. Rien de plus et rien de moins... Cependant, adapter un tel chef d'oeuvre sur une console qui ne s'y prêtait vraiment pas, cela mérite vraiment un grand bravo et on passera sur le scénario trop ressemblant au premier ou les petits problèmes de maniabilité.

But even with those few detractions, Resident Evil 2 is still as much an experience as it is a game. A huge improvement over the first title, RE2 succeeds in making you feel as though you're in the middle of a horror film - one in which you'll jump many, many times. If you've already played the PlayStation or PC versions of RE2, there's really no reason to buy this game, but for N64 owners who haven't tried yet, it's an absolute must-have.

Aside from the controls, RE2 doesn't have many problems. It is a must buy, or at least a good rental if you dislike playing video games for the N64 targeted for a younger audience. Here is to Capcom and the intelligent thinking when they picked up a 512MB cart for this game!

As with the initial Resident Evil, RE2 offers action, adventure, and a hell of a lot of zombies. With a fairly good computer, with at least 4mb of video memory, you should be able to enjoy this title to its fullest, and the short learning curve and completion time make this game great for novice players too.

After all these years Resident Evil 2 still is a great gaming experience. It still stands as the epitome of the Resident Evil franchise, despite all the sequels, prequels, and remakes. If you’ve never played RE 2 in the past, then it might be a good idea to pick it up for your GameCube, to complete the collection.

Resident Evil was a big hit on PSX, and made quite an impression with the PC release too. This type of game normally does not appeal to me but I thought I'd check it out, see what the fuss was about I am glad I did because I've just played it for about 7 to 8 hours in 3 sittings, and after this I'll go back for more!

If however you've never liked Resident Evil, this re-release is hardly going to change your mind. Of course, Code Veronica may well do so, but we reckon $50 is a little too pricey for an hour of sheer enjoyment [Ed's note: "We" do not reckon anything. Matt is obviously not a gamer.]. At the end of the day, what you're getting here is a lot of game, but if it's not your cup of tea, you'd be best to wait. Speaking on behalf of myself though, it should be clear to you by now that I've loved every minute of it. Afterall, it includes a taster of what could save the Dreamcast in Japan, which makes this package something very special indeed.

På det hela taget är Resident Evil 2 en märkligt beroendeframkallande upplevelse. Det ligger en stor njutning i att köra igenom spelet som Leon, Claire eller båda, trots skönhetsfläckarna och på grund av att spelets problem ändras lite beroende av vem du spelar, vilket ger bra möjligheter att spela om det.

Un jeu à la fois passionnant et angoissant. Une réalisation magistrale, digne d'un film. On retrouve avec plaisir tous les composants qui ont fait le succès du premier volet, mais avec une réalisation nettement plus aboutie. En plus, les programmeurs ont fait un gros effort pour que le jeu tire bien partie de toutes les configurations possibles, ce qui donne en plus un jeu très stable. Certainement, l'un des hits de cette année.

Podsumowując chciałbym zauważyć, że pomimo kilku niedociągnięć, najnowszy produkt VIRGIN jest grą dobrą. Za tym stwierdzeniem przemawia trzymająca w napięciu akcja i fabuła rodem z najlepszych filmów grozy. Inni mogą potraktować ten tytuł z dużą rezerwą, ale rasowi fani horrorów z pewnością spędzą przy nim niejedną ekscytującą noc.

För hardcorefantatikerna finns det tillräckligt med inslag för att de ska bli intresserade av den här versionen. För andra inte helt insatta, är Resident Evil 2 ett självklart alternativ. Det har alla de kvaliteter som ett spel i den här genren ska ha. Och med sina två intensiva grunduppdrag och allt annat smått och gott lär det inte göra någon besviken.

I’m about to lay one giant egg of a cliché: If you’ve never played RE 2 before, the GameCube version is worth a purchase. If, on the other hand, you peed yourself with the PSone iteration, feel free to skip this port without guilt. Even though the game is five years old – and hasn’t changed – the graphics (outside of cinemas and particle effects) hold up surprisingly well. Of course, the other things that make a survival horror game good still hold true: sound, suspense, storyline, and action make RE 2 a classic on any platform.

As ever, if you're a fan of the series, but you haven't actually bought Resident Evil 2, this is certainly the best version you can buy. All the pros and cons of the series are maintained here, and the new hardware doesn't do anything to add or detract from the game. Resident Evil 2 has always been a great game, and this is no exception. It's a great game to own, especially given its low retail price, but this version is not an essential purchase.

Als je houdt van schitterende graphics en een flinke dosis koude rillingen, dan is dit een mooi tussendoortje. Maar als je denkt dat dit het niveau van bijvoorbeeld een Half Life haalt, dan moet ik je helaas teleurstellen.

Resident Evil 2's origin as a PlayStation game is apparent. The method by which you save games will infuriate PC purists, as it is not only sporadic, but requires an item of which there are a limited number. This is part of the game's design, though, and it would lose much of its suspense without it. But if such conventions annoy you, consider yourself warned. If you can brave its shortcomings, however, Resident Evil 2 is good, scary fun.

Resident Evil sera toujours Resident Evil : de la peur, de l’émotion, de l’intrigue, de l’investigation, on se prend au jeu comme on pourrait l’être dans un film d’épouvante, sauf qu’ici, le héros c’est le joueur. Là où le bas blesse, c’est au niveau de la technique : c’est du copier – coller de la version Playstation !

It may be over five years old, but Resident Evil 2 still shows why it became one of the best sequels. Blame it on the zombies. While terrorizing poor Raccoon City, they managed to make survival/horror gameplay respectable and fun for the average Leon and Claire. Now GameCube players can experience the five-plus-year-old sequel to Capcom’s truly horrifying original Resident Evil that is, if you’re not already tired of number zero and one. Sharp visuals that overshadow previous RE2 versions are certainly the highlight to this port, while the entire gameplay has remained intact.

C'est sans surprise que l'on accueille cette conversion fidèle du Resident Evil 2 sorti en 1998 sur Playstation. Au prix auquel il est proposé, ce titre ne se justifiera qu'auprès des inconditionnels de la série qui ne possèdent toujours pas cet épisode. Un titre difficile à apprécier quand on imagine ce que l'équipe responsable du remake de Resident Evil aurait pu faire avec ce second volet.

[...] Di certo nessuno dei due vale i soldi che costa; avrei potuto capire se fossero stati delle riedizioni potenziate (stile Rebirth) o se fossero stati venduti insieme o a prezzo ridotto, ma così non ci siamo proprio. Nonostante ciò, non mi sento di stroncarli completamente, perché RE2 resta sempre molto divertente da giocare (se fate finta di non avere un GameCube) e RE3 fa presa sulla mia parte più sborona e sanguinaria. Che fare con questi giochi? Se siete appassionati della saga e volete possederne tutti i capitoli, reperite le versioni per PSX o per PC di RE2 e 3, che adesso costano meno. Se non avete né una PlayStation né un computer, beh... potete ripiegare sulle versioni per GC, ma rischiate la delusione.

If you can look past the disappointment of the game not receiving a graphical facelift there is much to enjoy with Resident Evil 2. The game has plenty of replayability and there are even some mini-games in there to boot. In fact there are many gamers out there that regard Resident Evil 2 to be the best in the series and it's difficult to argue with that opinion. Sadly the cutscenes not being subtitled is a big blow for deaf gamers and this is reflected in our rating of the game. Resident Evil fans cannot afford to miss it though, particularly if you didn't experience it on any other console.

But if the next Resident Evil game doesn't break some new ground, other games that try harder could easily pass it by. The game was derivative even in its first incarnation, and although RE2 tweaks plenty of things along the way, it's still a do-things-in- the-right-order adventure game enlivened by periodic action.

The GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 is a straight port of the PlayStation game that came out in 1998, but with higher-resolution character models and a few minor voice updates. The Dreamcast (god rest its soul) received a similar port of the game during its short lifespan. When you compare the two versions, they're the exact same product, with exception of the GameCube version being on a single disc. However, in 2003, RE 2 will cost you forty dollars -- a whole twenty dollars more than the Dreamcast version. A title that is simply a port of a five-year-old game doesn't warrant such a high price tag.

Resident Evil 2 on the GameCube may be enticing for those who have never played the game, and for them it might be worth a rental. Even so, the game offers the arrange mode (which gives you unlimited ammunition and all of the powerful weapons right off the bat), so you can easily breeze through it in a few hours. As for all of the other Resident Evil fans, there's absolutely no reason for you to buy this game.

Resident Evil 2 remains one of my preferred games on last generation's PlayStation and had the title been remade as Capcom revamped RE1, it might have been a remarkable GameCube title. As it stands, though, RE2 hits Nintendo's next-generation console totally unchanged and -- five years old, just feels completely outdated. The end port is not a bad one. Purists hoping to get all of the "survival horror" titles on one console will probably satisfied, and if you've never played RE2 before it's still an enjoyable enough adventure.

Anyway, yes, the games. Resident Evil 2 is set just after the end of the original, with the sequel, once again, playable as two different characters; rookie S.T.A.R.S cop Leon S. Kennedy (on his first assignment, the poor chap), and Claire Redfield, who's looking for her brother, S.T.A.R.S member Chris Redfield. Each quest is broadly similar trawl around Racoon City (albeit with a few minor story differences), and anyone familiar with other games in the series will know what to expect.
