Despite being a bigger adventure, the gameplay follows the same winning formula as the original, with thoughtful puzzles and intense monster encounters. As a terrific sequel that remains true to the original formula, many fans consider Resident Evil 2 to be the pinnacle of the series.

In short, Capcom has written the book on how to make a sequel once again. RE2 is an absolute winner and represents the pinnacle of the survival horror genre on Sony's 32-bit machine and the PC. Games like RE2 come along at most once a year. When they do, adventure and horror fans alike owe it to themselves to be in line. The horror has just begun.

Resident Evil 2 is a sequel that not only meets expectations, but easily surpasses them with ease. Once you begin this game, you're hooked. Once you finish, you'll drool for more. Resident Evil 2 is frighteningly good.

Ännu bättre och ännu läskigare än föregångaren.

Besides that, nothing really has changed from the now traditional RE style of gameplay. The puzzles are a dominant factor, and while some are extremely obscure/weird, Capcom covers their tracks by introducing you to the police chief (and wannabe mayor), which you learn is a very…interesting man with a few…strange hobbies, making the weird puzzles fit in because of the sick-minded chief. For RE veterans, the puzzles aren’t really earth shattering, but I get an impression that’s the point – to keep the story moving. What’s neat is both characters will have different puzzles to solve at given times – each of their scenario’s are different in minor ways, like the original RE was. A few of the puzzles are frustrating trial-and error sorts, but usually they don’t give you too much trouble as long as you know how to think.

The overall gameplay structure is enriched by a second quest that is linked to the original, and it explains everything that the first quest didn't. The second quest might be a little tougher at first, but that changes quickly enough and you are on the same wavelength as before. The final boss is too easy, but that doesn't mean you're gonna get it that easily. The other bosses in the game are at least a little tougher and should be able to keep you ready and alert. It is good to be scare.

A lot of really wonderful things can and will be said by reviewers about Resident Evil 2. It's a good sequel, it's a superb game in it's own right and it will consume your life for hours, but it's not a quantum leap forward in the evolution of the game or the genre. With fourth wave titles like Metal Gear Solid on the way, Resident Evil 2 just isn't quite the ground breaker that the first one was. That said, it's going to be the game that's spinning in my PlayStation for the next few weeks.

Now, I hear what you're saying: "This Zombie is chewing on my foot, it deserves to be shot." But that's just the response that society has conditioned you to have. So even though this is a great game with good graphics, terrific sound, riveting action, and puzzles that will keep you entertained for hours... As a favor to our Zombie friends, do not buy this game.

So it turns out I’ve probably told you everything you already know. It’s hard NOT to like a game like this, one that is obviously a labor of love to a great team of talented designers. It’s certain to be one of the "ten best" of the year. Playstation owners "must have" Resident Evil 2, by gosh.

But in the end, Resident Evil 2 is one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. With its unique camera angles, storyline, graphics, sound effects, and music, Resident Evil 2 seems more like a product out of Hollywood than the video game industry. Resident Evil 2 surpasses its predecessor in nearly every aspect of gameplay, and in short, Capcom has outdone itself.

In the end of the day, you wouldn't play RE2 for the graphics in today's world, but a game can't be judged solely on presentation or on modern-day standards. Of course, for 1998, RE2 was a huge improvement over the original and was a first-class fright-fest. Now that new PS One's are nearly extinct, RE2 can be picked up for an extremely reasonable price; you have absolutely no excuse for not picking this up.

Overall, it is impossible to expect the game.com version of RE2 to be the same kind of experience as the other versions. All things considered, it is an excellent translation of the game that will keep you busy for a long time. The frustration factor because of the display and save issues is worth considering, but if you're a fan of RE2 you should be able to get over it. If you already have a game.com, this might be an especially interesting title, but if you're looking for a game to begin your collection, go with the arcade hits.

Expect frustration galore in this partially faithful port that looks like Resident Evil 2, sounds like Resident Evil 2, but lacks the captivating qualities of the Capcom adventure series. Give it a look if you're a huge fan of the horror game genre, but remember that the scariest thing in this game are the controls.
