Rise of Nations is a deep and complicated game. It offers full multiplayer options, sharp AI, and a Risk-like Conquer the World campaign game instead of a story-based campaign. It's one of the finest strategy games ever made, but some fans will be overwhelmed by the complexity and depth here. Suffice it to say: Any fan of Civilization style turn based gaming and Age of Empires style complex real-time gaming, should give this a try. This is a game for the history books, one designed to stand the test of time.

WITH RISE OF NATIONS, Big Huge Games has with their first title established themselves as a rare game development company. They were willing to take risks to bring freshness to an otherwise stale genre, and along the way have created one of the best RTS games ever made.

Rise of Nations is awesome! There are no other words to describe it. The developers have created a fresh twist to this stale genre and players will enjoy it immensely. Go out to your nearest retail store and pick it up. This is one purchase you will not regret!

Rise of Nations, whilst not perfect, is probably the best strategy game I have played in a long time. It oozes quality and is a must-have for every strategy fan. And if you’re not keen on strategy, this could well be the one to change your mind – anyone that thinks "strategy-gaming fun" is an oxymoron has to pick this up. The epitome of RTS pleasure – a new benchmark in the genre has been set.

The combination of turn-based strategy for conquering the world and the real-time battles over territories is perfect and works like a charm. The use of research as a strategic resource element may not be original but is put in extremely well-balanced. The huge amount of different units is exemplary for all strategy games out there and their AI with the possibility to use them in a defensive, aggressive or even guard-mode is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Combine all this with the great multiplayer possibilities and you’ve got a winner. For me it’s simple: Rise of Nations is thé best strategy game I’ve seen in years.

Overall, Rise of Nations is top-notch. It certainly isn't perfect, but it comes close. I do have my complaints, but they are mostly minor. This game is definitely a must-have for the RTS fan and/or history buffs. You may have noticed that I made several comparisons between Rise of Nations and Age of Empires. Until now, Age of Empires has really been the RTS game to which other RTS games were measured. The time has come for Age of Empires to move over and let Rise of Nations take over as proverbial king of the mountain. Pick this one up today; you won't be disappointed.

By combining some of the concepts of Civilization with the general gameplay of Age of Empires, Big Huge Games has created a truly outstanding game.

When you take into account the versatility, longevity and downright playability of this game, you can easily see that this is going to be THE RTS game of the year and will be the game that sets the new benchmark for all others to follow.

There is so much depth in with Rise of Nations that telling you every facet would be a lengthy and eventually dull process. There is the market place element and caravanning your produce around your cities. There is the supply chain strategy needed for battle so your troops aren't left out on a limb. There are generals, spies, forts and temples all of which bring their own strengths and weaknesses to the game. While the game is so immense it what it offers it never really ever becomes over whelming. The RTS formula is still ever present and the usual tactics can still be used to win the day. The majority of the missions we played in the Conquer the World campaign involved either a quick surprise attack to defeat the enemy or a long drawn out slog.

As for me, I fully enjoyed the game, and even my criticism wouldn't be this harsh if I hadn't had overly high expectations for the game in the first place. In any case there is still room for improvement in the turn-based segment, and I sure hope the guys at Big Huge Games realize this and make Rise of Nations 2 a true classic and role model for future games.

Hiccups aside, Rise of Nations has everything it takes to be a huge success: a historical setting, a big name publisher, an easy-and-effective multiplayer setup, and a highly tweaked version of a classic design model. Classic real-time gaming simply doesn't get much better than this.

I never used to finish the RTS games that I played, but recently it’s either my maturity level or the fact that the games are getting better that I feel compelled to finish what I start. If you ask anyone who knows me, they’ll probably tell you that it’s the latter as evidenced by my continuing love for the different sounds of farts and my enduring joy of picking my nose in public. Disgusting personal habits aside, I can now chalk up Rise of Nations (RON) to my list of completed real time strategy games.

I suspect that now you can see my problem in some detail, and no, I won’t take lithium for it. I place its origins squarely at BHG’s doorstep for creating a game that borrows extensively but cautiously from the TBS genre, doing what it does extremely well but offering next to nothing which is new.

Still, RON remains a typical RTS. You build cities, collect resources, and then throw your masses at the other guy's mob until one of them gives way. The extras aren't always conducive to great gameplay, as there's often too much to handle on normal speed settings. Units and features such as commandos, spies, and flank damage are relegated to the sidelines for most players.
