However, any sub-company needs one whale of a game to get its presence known, from the very start...and Rise of the Dragon definitely fit the bill. It's tough-as-nails premise of a mutant drug took many Sierra fans by complete surprise, as well as the murder mystery that unfolds. Its graphics were also a unique approach, using the type of new-age cartoon style of drawing that would soon become popular in modern, macabre comic books like Spawn. The end result was a thoroughly gripping tale, far better than most of the movie/TV offerings at the time. It's even on Techtite's list of Top 50 Multimedia Classics. However, regardless of the amusing atmosphere of a futuristic metropolis, as well as the rogue character "Blade Hunter," no sequels of this game were ever made. What a shame.

Bra grafik. Men det absolut bästa i Rise of the Dragon är musiken.

Rise of the Dragon sets out to be a good-looking, friendly game that provides depth of gameplay without the brick wall that a dodgy parser can provide and that's just what you get! The game is smothered with excellence. The art - it would be insulting to call them graphics - is unsurpassed and the environment almost movie-like. Once in a while there comes a game that will appeal everyone, this is one such game.

Rise of the Dragon is without a doubt one of the best games for the Sega CD, period. The Dragon has risen!

DOSThe One
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Rise of the Dragon is that, superb audio-visual elements aside, the game system and the general design are both near faultless. Unless you are really turned off by so-called 'interactive fiction' you can't go far wrong with Dynamix's first adventure to be released through Sierra.

AmigaAmiga Format
It's not without its problems though, but they are problems that emanate from the game's ambition. Played from floppy it's slow, not crushingly so, but still slow. The game really deserves to be played from hard disk. It will however, probably be remembered for its cracking graphics and great use of sound, but it must not be forgotten that there's a toughish adventure here too.

AmigaAmiga Action
Very atmospheric, very involved, and very entertaining. Executed with style, Rise of the Dragon features gorgeously detailed graphics with appropriate background music, from finger-tapping, brain-melting groovy rhythms to the creation of suspense with deep, throbbing beats. Because you luxuriously soak into the game the more you play, the disk swapping barely becomes a hindrance. The game guarantees hours of investigative play, making the price very reasonable. As the follow-up to Heart of China, it's marginal but I'd say Dragon has the upper hand due to a stronger and more intriguing plot.

DOSACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Apart from the longevity question, Rise of the Dragon is an excellent game. It's fun to play, easy to get into and it also has some genuine pace, a factor that sets it above most adventures on the market. Sierra's next game using their new system could be a masterpiece.

AmigaASM (Aktueller Software Markt)

Rise of the Dragon is a very special game for me personally. It is one of the very few adventure-games I actually finished WITHOUT consulting a walkthrough. I admit, it almost took me two years, but hey, not everybody had the internet in those days, and with that I was just a kid: I couldn't understand half of the mature humor in the game yet. Nowadays, it seems strange to me it took me so long, because once you know what to do; you'll be able to play through the game in about 10 minutes.

SEGA CDAll Game Guide
Rise of the Dragon is not too difficult or long. Some gamers will likely finish the game within a couple of days. It is still a fun game though and one of the better Sega CD games. If you like these type of games you can also try Snatcher, a higher quality game that is not as dark.

DOSHonestGamers
Rise of the Dragon isn't perfect, but if you consider yourself a fan of graphic adventures you should be ashamed of yourself for having overlooked this one for so long. And while it's a shame that a company so closely associated with Sierra so rarely developed anything for the genre their parent made famous, they did use this same engine for another excellent entry, Heart of China.

DOSAdventure Classic Gaming
Overall, Rise of the Dragon is a truly involving sci-fi detective adventure. It features an unique mix of gameplay elements and creates an atmospheric setting with its excellent music and graphics that are also appropriate for the sci-fi backdrop. The game sets itself apart from other original Sierra On-Line games by the special mature Dynamix touch. It is a true gem for fans of the genre interested in thrilling adventure games.

Digital comics have to be my favorite genre on the Sega CD. There's just so much quality in the releases that the handful of games available alone make the add-on worth owning. From Snatcher to Secret of Monkey Island, the Sega CD knows how to show graphic adventure fans a good time. Among the top of the heap has to be Dynamix's Rise of the Dragon, which hauls you in to its dark and decayed world like few other games on the system can.

Rise of the Dragon is an above-average adventure and uses a novel interface to interact with the world. For hard drive owners, this is a must; for the rest of us, the disk-swapping and access times could make it more hassle than it's worth.

AmigaAmiga Power
If you're looking for a fresh, innovative graphic adventure, one with a twist, you'd better look elsewhere. But if you just want something big, solid and dependable to get your teeth into, and aren't too worried by the likelihood of having seen it all before, this would probably do fine.

SEGA CDGame Informer Magazine
There are a few frustrating scenes, however - like when you have to tap a videophone. The side-scrolling arcade sequences are a low point as well. If you can get past these unpleasantries, though, you're left with an entertaining adventure.

SEGA CDGame Players
But even though this Rise of the Dragon is rated MA-17, it tones down some scenes and deletes others. That's a loss, because a game that treats it's mature subject matter in a, well mature fashion would be a step in the right direction - for the growing number of adult gamers, if not the senators who don't believe these players exist.

SEGA CDElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
An almost-perfect translation of the PC title. Rise of the Dragon has a richly-deserved MA-17 rating. This one captures it's gritty future incredibly well, with atmospheric graphics, but the problem is there is almost no replay value.

This unique game is pretty graphic and backed by an adult theme. However, it is easy to get stuck permanently in this game if you do the wrong thing. It lacks elements of replay value.

SEGA CDJust Games Retro
If you're looking for a futuristic detective story in the vein of Snatcher, Rise of the Dragon won't disappoint. It's not amazing in any sense of the word. It's also short, not particularly challenging, and fairly undistinguished. But starving adventurers will be glad to know that it's a competent adventure with good gameplay, not just a new plot and different setting. The Sega CD's "talkie" version is pretty well-acted, but the reduced colors and green tint bring the value of this port back in line with the original. Interested parties should seek out whichever is most convenient.

Rise of the Dragon may be more style than substance, but if the theme and visuals appeal to you, there is some enjoyment to be found. Just don’t expect to be engaged as fully as you’d like, and keep a stress ball handy for the action sequences.

SEGA CDThe Video Game Critic
The system for manipulating items is confusing, and I was always accidentally leaving items behind at locations. It's also easy to get stuck in "dead end" situations that occur when you fail to make a crucial move, and these can be hard (if not impossible) to recover from. Some of the puzzles, like connecting wires, can be annoying, but at least you can save your place at any time. There are also two arcade-style mini-games thrown in. A lot of people love Rise of the Dragon, but I found it to be difficult and somewhat tedious. If you're into detective games, it may be worth a look.

SEGA CDVideo Games & Computer Entertainment
Rise of the Dragon has some tricky puzzles, but the bad voice acting and fuzzy graphics detract from the fun. If you're into graphic adventures, buy Jurassic Park or Monkey Island before you even consider Dragon.

Don’t be fooled; the original disk-based release might be considerably harder to find, but it tears this CD “upgrade” into thousands of itty-bitty pieces.

SEGA CDMega Fun
