As the title indicates,"Rise of the Robots" brings us into an ultra-modern futuristic world where sophisticated technology has permitted man to create all sorts of robots to do the most difficult of tasks. Evidently these robots are, above all, submitted to man and must remain servants to society.

Science fiction writers have made a big thing about how controlled and sterile things would become if machines took over the world and Rise Of The Robots almost proves this. Yes it's better than the average beat 'em up title but just doesn't match the best.

You'll enjoy the music too. You'll hear everything from industrial to techno to French pop influences. At the very least, you'll want to rent this one.

DOSWorld Village (Gamer's Zone)
Now the bad news. Despite all the points this games wins in the graphic department, this games comes along as a disappointment. It seemed the makers did not put as much effort in other areas as it did the in the graphics. After the "golly gee wow" factor of the graphics dissipates, the games loses that particular aspect that makes the player want to come back for more.

I tried hard to like Rise of the Robots because it does look so damn good, but although I did derive some fun out of it, it was short-lived. If you're really gagging for a beat 'em up go for Mortal Kombat II instead - it has more characters, more moves more lastability and tons more fun.

Rise of the Robots est assez sympa, mais qualitativement, il reste loin d'Ultimate Body Blows sur CD32 !

Game GearVideo Games & Computer Entertainment
Rise of the Robots for the 16-bit systems was kind of a disappointment, so it's not surprising to find out that the Game Gear version is so-so. You are an android whose missions is to fight against renegade robots. Basic fighting game structure here, but with special moves that are way too hard to execute; you'll find yourself kicking and punching repeatedly once you corner an opponent. The graphics are above average for the Game Gear and the design of the opponents is top-notch. If only there was gameplay to back it up. This one's for hardcore robot groupies only.

AmigaAmiga Computing
While on the surface everything looks the business, the playability is definitely not up to the same standard. it's not entirely bad by any means, but when you've played Mortal Kombat 2 only minutes before, you really do feel like something is missing from Rise.

SNESGame Players
As a game that was originally designed for PC, Rise of the Robots offers impressive graphics and a solid soundtrack. But the old phrase 'never judge a book by it's cover applies here, since there is not much beyond visual appeal to hold your interest.

SNESElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Rise of the Robots suffers from poor control and few special moves. The graphics are very good, but the lack of variety hampers the overall effect. Cool looking fighters and a good idea, but it just doesn't work.

3DOGameFan Magazine
This very well may be the worst fighting game I've ever played in my entire life, despite all it's fancy, shiny SGI-ness. With choppy animation, incredibly shallow, painful and lame two-button gameplay, zero scrolls or even stages that move for that matter, Rise of the Robots is one to avoid...especially with such power-games like Tekken, Tohshinden and Virtua on the way.

Man tröttnar väldigt fort.

ROTR may keep you satisfied if you don't own any other games and you're into extremely basic video fighting. The bad control, weak gameplay and choppy animation infest this cart from start to finish. Robot's more than a little rusty.

This is probably one of the more disappointing titles of the last year. After being hyped to the skies, mostly for it's rendered look, the final game falls short in lot's of different categories, including animation and control.

SNESAll Game Guide
Although Rise of the Robots is not as bad as Shaq-Fu, it is one of the most boring 16-bit fighting games. It's a shame that the creators, who went to so much obvious effort with presentation, character graphics, and other surface qualities, couldn't design an exciting fighting game. Despite the nicely rendered cyborg and the highly detailed robots, this game is barely worth a rental.

3DOElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
This is by far the worst fighting game I've ever seen. It dwells too much on cinemas and it's (supposed) eye-popping graphics. The game play is almost non-existent. The few moves are near-impossible to do. In this game, trying to do a normal punch is on par to a special move. The animation really lacks and it's just plain boring to watch. Rise of the Robots is a game that is just not fun to play. I don't like ripping on games, but ones as poor as this deserve it.

Finger weg!

Perhaps the worst fighting game of all time, Rise of the Robots ironically features some of the best graphics ever seen in a beat-em-up. In one-player-mode, the Cyborg is the only character that may be selected. The Cyborg also only has two special moves. Two moves?! Though the 3DO's graphic capabilities make this a better-looking game than the cartridge versions, it's still to be avoided at all costs; if you're curious, you can look for copies in the "used" bins.

SNESDigital Press - Classic Video Games
Not only was this atrocity released to a ridiculous number of consoles (the Game Gear version is particularly funny), but the idiots even made a sequel. Finding a fighting game that is worse than Rise on a home console will be pretty much impossible. If the designers accomplished anything, it's solidifying their place in gaming history by crafting one of the worst games of all time. Congratulations!

AmigaAmiga Format
I cannot recommend you buy this game. You are as well to look at the screenshots in the magazines as to spend over 40 quid. The five-disk intro looks tremendous. But you only ever watch these things twice. The robots look fabulous. The attention to detail is excellent, the movement fluid, in a mechanical sort of way. They are supposed to have artificial intelligence which allows them to read your moves and act accordingly. So why is it that you can squeeze them into a corner and tap away at them until the bout is yours? Simple moves like crouch and kick are very effective, but after winning five bouts on the trot, you get rather bored.

Overall, besides the initial idea and the setting, everything about Rise of the Robots is and feels defective. The graphics are mediocre at best, the control is bad, the shortage of options is baffling, and there are all kind of other annoying flaws that each make this game a total nuisance. All those flaws together however, truly make Rise of the Robots "one of the worst video games ever."

DOSKingdom of Desire
Ist Rise of the Robots wirklich das schlechteste Spiel aller Zeiten?

Amiga CD32Amiga Power
Rise of the Robots is terrible. I am not exaggerating. Ironically, it is probably because the graphics are so good that it plays so poorly – every move the robots make takes so many frames of animation, and so much memory, and so many months of rendering with 3D Studio, that is simply would not have been possible to make the gameplay any more complicated than it is. What an astonishing waste of time.

3DOThe Video Game Critic
As you would expect, there is a two-player mode, but player one can only be ECO35-2. What the heck is THAT all about?? There are three punches and three kicks (light, medium, hard), but they all look exactly the same! The controls are sluggish, and trying to pull off special moves is futile. That's not much of an issue though, because the weak fighting engine doesn't demand much technique anyway. There are no interesting backgrounds to view during the fights, and no music either! Rise of the Robots is painfully shallow compared to classic fighters like Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat. Even if you like this kind of thing, Rise of the Robots won't do much time in your 3DO.
