Rise of the Triad: Dark War

Rise of the Triad: Dark War is the first title from Apogee that can really compare to Doom, the reference for first person perspective games. With a license from Id Software, Apogee used the powerful Doom engine and added many interesting features. For example, you must choose your character at the start of the game and aim up or down to blast away your your enemies or use one of the ten devastating weapons you find in the game.

Rise of the Triad è un prodotto senza dubbio superiore a Doom dal punto di vista tecnico, contando tutti i particolari e le innumerevoli chicche che alla Apogee hanno inserito. Hanno commesso un sole errore, a mio parere: pensare che tutto il fascino di Doom fosse nel massacro, e infatti quello che hanno messo su in Triad è semplicemente una macelleria. [...] È più grosso più cattivo di Doom ma è in fondo semplicemente “avanza e spara”, e perde diversi punti rispetto alla giocabilità, l’atmosfera e l’adrenalina di alcuni livelli del gioiellino della id. Il problema sta anche qui: i livelli della versione shareware di Triad sono progettati peggio di quelli di Doom. [...] È un peccato perché i punti a favore di Triad sono ugualmente molti: l’engine è valido, ottimo graficamente, ha un’opzione multi giocatore in 11 che promette benissimo e una cattiveria assurda con l’arsenale definitivo per sfogarsi un po’ nelle giornate nere.

Si è già fatto il paragone con Doom e naturalmente ROTT ne è uscito perdente; con questo non vuol dire che dopo il gioco della id non si debbano più realizzare sparatutto bi o tridimensionali, bisognerebbe però in questi casi sforzarsi non solo di ideare un buon prodotto, ma un prodotto eccezionale, un po’ come ha fatto la Lucas con Dark Forces, perché il paragone è lì dietro l’angolo. Detto ciò ritengo che comunque Rise of the Triad sia uno sparatutto divertente ed immediato che sarà sicuramente apprezzato dalla frangia di doommaniaci più avvezzi alle emozioni forti (probabilmente la stragrande maggioranza).

È abbastanza divertente, è dotato di un confortante e perverso senso dell’umorismo e quelli di voi che hanno l’accesso ad un modem o ad una rete si fregheranno le mani con gioia pensando alle numerose caratteristiche multiplayer (che includono anche l’opzione per il collegamento del microfono al vostro PC per urlare insulti agli avversari). Ci sono moltissimi livelli e probabilmente vorrete finirli tutti, magari ricorrendo a qualche sotterfugio. In realtà, alla fine tutto quello che dovete tenere in mente è quello che ho detto all’inizio: che è simile a Doom, ma non è altrettanto valido. E questo è il ritornello che tutti i recensori di videogiochi si sono stancati di scrivere. Passo e chiudo.

The latest shoot-'em-up from the creators of Wolfenstein 3D is no Descent or Dark Forces, but it has a lot going for it.

„Rise of the Traid“ ist definitiv ein gutes Spiel mit wirklich abgedrehten Ideen und für die Zeit des Release auch einer ordentlichen Grafik. Einzig die etwas undurchschaubaren Level trüben die sonst gnadenlose und schnörkellose Action in tollem Gewand. Insgesamt also ein innovatives, abgedrehtes und brutales Spiel, mit kleinen Schwächen im Aufbau.

Keep in mind that the violence, like many other aspects of ROTT, seems to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. It seems doubtful that anyone at Apogee seriously thought that this game would offer a serious challenge to the title of Best DOOM Clone, so they instead decided to have some fun with it. RISE OF THE TRIAD cannot be described as more than an average 3D action game, but it does have all the necessary ingredients, especially when it comes to network play, and it has its moments, too.

Rise of the Triad è un gioco che si presenta come un rivale di Doom e che invece, osservandolo attentamente, si rivela niente di più che un Wolfenstein 3D potenziato, con grafica e sonoro ai livelli dell’ormai mitico prodotto della ID software, ma un motore grafico e un plot generale che ben poco si discosta dal vecchio capolavoro degli stessi programmatori.

Själva spelet är i samma anda som dom andra shoot'em up-spelen typ Doom och Marathon. En vesäntlig skillnad är dock att Rise of the Triad har så mycket renare och bättre grafik än de andra.

ROTT is a long forgotten fast-paced FPS that is exploding with style, let down by a lazy port. Take the time to master the control scheme though and you’ll find ROTT a lot of fun to play and jam-packed with innovative features.
