Most of the objects look digitized, and the framerate keeps up pretty well as you careen down city streets at breakneck speeds. The gameplay is almost identical to the Genesis version; you can kick, punch, or smack your opponents with a club or chain. You can even beat up on the police and ride over pedestrians. Some of the advanced bikes feature a "nitro" speed burst. The video scenes showing gangs of bikers are entertaining and the music is fantastic, featuring Soundgarden, Hammerbox, and Paw, to name a few. The "Big Game" mode allows you to earn money, purchase bikes, and progress through five levels. The set of tracks in each level are the same, except they get longer and tougher. I've always been a big Road Rash fan, and I was very impressed with this.

If you don't own a 3DO, you won't regret the bucks you dish out to rent a system and this game. And if you do, you gotta get the Rash!

Go ahead: drive angry. The superb Windows 95 translation of Road Rash preserves - indeed, enhances - all the lunatic speed and enthusiastic violence of the classic console motorcycle racing game, which first appeared on the 3DO.

In conclusion, Road Rash on the Sega CD is actually pretty good. The only thing it lacks is a two-player mode, but you can't have everything. The invisible walls, which seem to an inherent problem with the graphics engine, don't ruin the experience at all, and there's some solid racing to be had here, especially if you've already played the few quality racers available on the Sega CD, like Jaguar XJ220. If you're looking for a great game to add to your game collection, then try this one out. It may be a little hard to come, by seeing how it was released in 1995, but if you can get your hands on it, you're going to love it.

The game's only downfall is still the 3DO's cumbersome disc accessing time. The soundtrack - a varied collection of hard rocking industrial grunge, featuring bands like Soundgarden, Swervedriver and Hammerbox - is perfect for the title and the graphics are top-notch. Road Rash is an incredible effort from EA that's got to be played to be believed.

By far the best thing about Road Rash is the ability to race with a cold drink one hand and 3DO controller in the other. (I'd never try this in real life --- but now I can!)

The gameplay calls for excellent driving more than heroic combat, but you still won't want to relinquish the controller. This Road's well worth the toll at the cash register.

There are at least two common points among The Need for Speed, FIFA Soccer and Road Rash. First, they are among the best titles ever made for the 3DO console and second, they are all published by Electronic Arts.

That not withstanding, this is one of the best 3DO games I've had the privilege of purchasing and playing. I also believe this review contains the most hyphenated words I've used in a review thus far. A winning combination!

I loved the Genesis version and I love this one even more. With the CD quality sounds and the 32-bit capability of the 3DO, this version is one not to be missed. The tracks are cool, but the one thing that I griped about is that this game can get repetitious and tiresome. You can get used to the controls the moment you pick it up. Great addition to the 3DO.

Vorsicht - tieffliegende Biker: Road Rash, das The Need for Speed auf zwei Rädern, verquickt beinharten Fahrspaß mit viel Zynismus, kernigen Hardrock-Soundtracks und pompöser HiRes-Grafik. In Kooperation mit der Papyrus Design Group (NASCAR Racing, IndyCar Racing) hat Electronic Arts das populäre 3DO-/Playstation-Motorrad-Rennspiel exklusiv für Windows 95-PCs umgesetzt.

Overall, Road Rash on the Sega CD is a mixed package. It takes the music and user interface from the 32-bit versions of the game, and mixes it with the classic 2D game play. It does nothing to move the series along, but is still a satisfying experience. The original Genesis Road Rash games are some of the finest titles on the time, so there is nothing wrong with leaving well enough alone. This is a worth while purchase for Sega CD owners.

Despite it's shortcomings, this disc's amusing cinematics, thrilling gameplay and increasingly difficult levels will draw you in. The Rash has finally arrived on the Sega CD!

3DOAll Game Guide
I can't remember a game that has lasted longer than Road Rash. I played it for weeks on end when I first got it and I still play it frequently. The impressive computer AI and random traffic patters mean that every sitting provides you with something different. Surely, a racing game not to be missed by an older audience.

3DODigital Press - Classic Video Games
Beating down other riders and crashing into oncoming traffic at 150mph is an experience you won't soon forget. The Saturn and Playstation ports of this game do sport a better frame rate, but it's only a mild increase at that. None of the games support 2-players. 3DO owners would rarely be happier than with a copy of Road Rash.

Put your leather gloves on, lace up your leather boots, throw on that leather jacket, and prepare yourself for one hell of a ride in Electronic Arts' Road Rash. This game puts you on top of your motorcycle and challenges you to stay on it while traveling through cities and other surroundings. This is the most aggressive motorcycle game ever to hit the PC.

3DOGame Informer Magazine
The 3DO version of Road rash may not have paved the way for the future racers with innovative mechanics (the controls are passable at best), but it did leave a lasting mark with the first game soundtrack feature licensed music; the lineup boasts acts like Soundgarden, Paw and Monster Magnet. Since pummeling racers into the pavement is an ageless act of aggression, it would be great to see a developer (like, say, Burnout creator Criterion) recreate Road rash for next-gen systems.

WindowsPC Gameplay (Benelux)

PlayStationGame Players
But as much fun as Road Rash may remain, you can't help but feel the game is getting a little old. Sadly, the expanded memory capabilities of the CD-ROM seems to be filled with lame FMV sequences instead of innovative gameplay that has become expected from Electronic Arts. If you've never experienced Road Rash, there is certainly enough here to warrant a purchase. Otherwise, downshift and pass it.

SEGA CDGameFan Magazine
I don't know about this 3DO connection. Sure, Road Rash CD is a good 16-bit racer, but let's not go overboard. The 3DO has joy-polygons, powerful animation and thousands of colors. The Sega CD has no polygons, OK animation and 64 colors. Still for 16-bit, it's neato. I'm sure RR fans will do backflips, like silly.

So is it any good? Well, it's a competent racing game but looks a little dated when compared to the likes of Screamer 2. And, though the trimmings are all very well, unless you're bit of a biker, they just leave you cold. Still, it's nicely done and will help you pass a few minutes affably.

WindowsGamezilla
Road Rash is a great concept carried to an extreme, both in hardware requirements and juvenile attitude. With the likes of EA and Papyrus behind this title, it should have had the best of both companies' impressive qualities; instead it seems to have carried over the worst mistakes of their past racing titles -- Papyrus' blocky graphics and EA's recurring hardware-compatibility difficulties. Still, even with its drawbacks, I did find myself playing it for quite a few hours and having quite a bit of fun. Overall I rate it a 72. So much promise ... it should have been so much better.

WindowsGameStar (Germany)

PlayStationElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
If you've seen the 3DO version you probably won't see any changes on this version except for the minor differences. The sounds have been changed for the better and graphics are smoother than before. Other than that, everything else is the same. Overall, the game needs some spicing up with more tracks.

I absolutely loved this game on the 3DO and this is essentially the same game. So I should love it, right?...Wrong! This is the PS. Where's the upgrade? Gex, Total Eclipse and especially Off World Interceptor got majorly better going from 3DO to PS. What gives here? Gimme Rash 2 and maybe we can talk. I got a 3DO.

SEGA CDThe Video Game Critic
The other four stages are standard, Genesis-quality fare. There's a two-player mode, but it's alternating only - no split screen. Yeah, this is pretty disappointing stuff. The only redeeming feature is that you can save your progress to memory (no long passwords). Road Rash on the Sega CD is still a decent game, but the CD features didn't make it any better. NOTE: If you don't have plenty of memory available when you run this game, you'll get the message "PLACEHOLDER" in the corner, and won't be able to play.

SEGA SaturnAll Game Guide
In the end, Road Rash is still a good game and will appeal to gamers who appreciate motorcycle racing. At least to those who haven't played the game before. Unfortunately, the lack of updates severely hurts the title, making it an unwise purchase for anyone who's already had their fill of Road Rash.

PlayStationAll Game Guide
This PlayStation version of Road Rash could have been great; give it some beefed up graphics, new options, and different bikers and you'd have a hit on your hands. While it's still a fun action/arcade racer, it's not terribly innovative and falls as an average PlayStation conversion.
50
SEGA CDDigital Press - Classic Video Games
Of course EA wasn't the only one to just upgrade their old games on the new format, but this one had potential. It's not so much an average game as it is a disappointment. So many companies (especially Core) took it upon themselves to push the hardware, there is absolutely no reason why EA could not. You can see a great game hidden here is only the scaling effect was smoother. This is the perfect example of a missed opportunity.

PlayStationIGN
While Road Rash was cool for the Genesis, it hasn't made enough upgrades to make it on the PSX
