Rogue Ops is a solid game for stealth fans. It tries to be the next Metal Gear or Splinter Cell but can’t quite succeed. Nonetheless, judged on its own merits, the game is quite enjoyable.

Sam Fisher with boobs is an accurate description. Rogue Ops from Bits Studios and Kemco. The game obviously draws inspiration from Konami’s Metal Gear Solid franchise and Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell but can’t quite compete with the massive budgets for those games.

Stealth action fans should definitely look into picking this up, if just to try out the new items that are brought to the table. While Rogue Ops won’t set the gaming world on fire, the stealth action genre could be better off for having Nikki Connors.

Rogue Ops tries desperately to be the next Splinter Cell, or even the next Metal Gear Solid, but the game lacks both the mechanical polish and visual splendor to achieve that lofty goal. That's not to say that it's not a fun little offering all the same, though, because in my opinion it is. Flawed, but fun.

A dash of Splinter Cell, a hint of Metal Gear Solid and a sprinkle of Perfect Dark, Kemco's Rogue Ops is a stealth-saturated action game that hopes to grab a chunk of this increasingly popular subgenre away from heavy-hitters like Konami and Ubisoft. This is no easy task, but this Bits Studios developed offering manages to mimic the formula that worked for its predecessors well enough and as a result some of its play scenarios and objectives are intriguing, fun and ultimately satisfying. That said, Rogue Ops lacks the originality and, more importantly, polish of the games it strives to be -- and no amount of heroine sexiness or humorous one-liners can make us ignore that.

Rogue Ops offers one of the best stealth gameplay elements seen in an action title to date. I really got into that little combo move, cackling with glee when I snapped a neck or cursing when I flubbed the move and got taken down. I also enjoyed the icon-driven environments that made moving and interacting with objects very easy, and some will argue, too easy.

Rogue Ops, to me, is a welcomed surprise. Early on, my good friend and PR contact, Tim, gave me the heads up on Kemcos next project. After seeing the last few titles they released today, I was reluctant to investigate the title, but I bit the bait and was lucky enough to see the title progress over the past year. While the game doesn’t top Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid, it does offer its own flavor to stealth games. Kemco looks to be turning things around and Rogue Ops is a great start. It’s definitely a stepping-stone for them, and I have it on good word that, if the title sells well, we will be seeing more of Nikki. I sure hope we do because Rogue Ops may have its flaws, but when it gets right down to it… it’s a ton of fun!

Rogue Ops is a lot of fun to play, it’s filled with good puzzles and because of the varied levels you’ll have a good time right untill the end. Too bad that end comes a bit too soon though. The controls and the framerate are a bit sloppy in places, but never so bad you’ll stop playing. If you’re a stealth fan and can’t wait for The Twin Snakes and the new Splinter Cell, Rogue Ops is a fun game to try in the meantime. Don’t expect it to be as detailed as those two titles though, think of Rogue Ops as a less serious take on stealth gaming. If you’ve never played a stealth game yet and are not sure if you’ll like it, Rogue Ops is a good game to begin with. It’s not as unforgiving as Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, so you’ll have a better chance at getting used to sneaking around unseen.

When I heard about the new Kemco game, Rogue Ops, I at first thought it was a new Tom Clancy game. It's obviously not, though it does bear a few minor similarities to that game. The best way to describe Rogue Ops is this: give Lara Croft a bleach job for your heroine, mix the general look of Tomb Raider with the stealth and sniping of Metal Gear Solid and the manipulation gameplay of Final Fantasy X and the confusing item location of Silent Hill 2. Strange combination? Definitely. But is it fun? Yes ø though it has some flaws.

Rogue Ops is a fairly respectable effort by Bits to reproduce that feeling of being a secretive badass that a good stealth game provides. Unfortunately, its uneven components keep it from cohering in the way that better stealth games have. If you can't get enough stealth action and can overlook Rogue Ops' flaws, you ought to give it a look.

Rogue Ops is a new stealth action game from Bits Studios that draws inspiration from other stealth games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell. Rogue Ops also brings a few mechanical innovations to the table, some of which are actually pretty well-thought-out and help ease the flow of the stealth gameplay. Alas, some of the game's fundamental components aren't as strong as they could be and end up detracting from the experience. Still, if you can get around the weaker aspects of the game, Rogue Ops should be a reasonably entertaining experience for stealth fans looking for their next fix.

Besides some upsetting quirks, Rogue Ops is worthy enough for rental or a cheap purchase. Players will hate the poorly set up point-and-click qualities of the interactivity between environments, but they will enjoy the uniqueness in the game play. The story is very bland and it is told through weak cut scenes with horrible voice acting but the stealth kills will keep players entertained. If you want to play a game with quality graphics and shadow effects, then play Splinter Cell instead because the graphics in Rogue Ops are well below average with horrible character models and scratchy voice acting. If you are a fan of the third-person stealth genre (Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Splinter Cell) then you can probably see through Rogue Ops' flaws. With some originality and variation in the completion of levels, Rogue Ops is one operation that you might want to experience.

It's sad that this game is so short and contains only one ending and no unlockable content. This makes the replay value not very good. The controls are the biggest problem with Rogue Ops. When you have to stop and look where to go or wait for a marker to turn green so you can go up just interferes with the flow of the game. This was a fine first try for Kemco in the stealth game genre. I hope they can fix a few of the problems with the game and then they will have a real winner.

The controls is what ruins this game unfortunately, they make a good game become increasingly annoying. I found myself often aggravated about how I had to work around the faults in the game to make it seem more fun. The need to line up to the ladders and pipes to climb them, or lack of fluid motion the game has when you must stop your activity and then press the action button, or directional on the analogue stick to get up against a wall. The pauses in progression is what hinders this game most. You picture a set of actions in your head to get from point A to point B and you start to act them out only to be stopped by bad controls and lack of fluidity. Unfortunately the wonderful game play elements don't compensate for the inherit flaws Rogue Ops has.

At the end of the day we are a bit disappointed with this one. We have followed it since we first saw it last year and we have been excited about it ever since. We thought it had a genuine chance of being one cracking game but it has turned out to be a title that just pokes it head above average. If you really wanted to have a crack at it we would still recommend you do, but to anyone else this is one to avoid.

the intelligent touches and relative difficulty make Rogue Ops generally fun for fans of the genre. The unevenness in the presentation and controls keep it from really setting the genre on fire, but this approach is just unique enough to keep hardcore stealth fans happy until the next batch of signature titles come down the pipe.

Splinter Cell may have given birth to the latest generation of stealth action titles, but the granddaddy of them all is, of course, Metal Gear Solid. So any game with designs on the PS2 stealth throne has quite a gauntlet to run; it's not like fans have got nothing to compare it to. Rogue Ops features a female lead by way of differentiation, but otherwise is pretty much what you'd expect from a new entry to the genre. Thanks to a couple of smart design moves, however, there's just enough here to make it a worthwhile curiosity for enthusiasts.

Glitches can be found throughout the game, such as bodies floating on steps, along with weapons. Again, it comes down to how much this genre has to offer. Rogue Ops brings little to no innovation and/or improvement to the table. Be careful when selecting this title; at the most, give it a rent. It is too bad that not even Nikki Connors can save this title.

Rogue Ops might have worked as a kids game, replacing the characters and settings with something more family friendly. It works on a simplistic level (perfect for a young one to learn the genre), but in direct competition with some of the best the industry has to offer, it has neither the depth nor the tension required. Even as a budget title, it would have been better off becoming something else.

Rogue Ops is just destined for obscurity. Although it's obviously a very different game, Argonaut's I-Ninja has already shown once this month how you can borrow pretty much every genre trapping in existence and still produce a cohesive, absorbing and memorable game. Rogue Ops does the opposite - it borrows lots of ideas from games like Splinter Cell (light meter), SOCOM (near-usable voice commands in single-player), Tenchu (brutal stealth kills), MGS (weapons), and plenty more besides, but it doesn't pay enough attention to what makes the best of them so memorable.

It fouls up the basics, and then tries to overcompensate by getting more and more contrived - and it just doesn't work. The intricate layering of tasks and guard puzzles merely proves frustrating, and with the lack of anything beyond the game's eight lengthy single-player levels, which you probably won't feel much like completing, it's a game that looks good in theory but falls flat in execution.

Red-shirts. Those poor bit parts that always took point on away missions and wound up getting chided, chopped, chewed, chaliced and often choked by any indigenous creatures sensible enough to try and apprehend Captain Kirk. It's clear now that they were the lucky ones. Put a red-shirt in the average stealth-action game, and he'd realise what it truly is to be expendable. Having robbed from virtually every stealth orientated game released since the original Metal Gear Solid, Rogue Ops involves killing nameless guards by breaking their necks, shooting them in the head, sniping them from afar, slicing them up with shurikens, poisoning them with arrows, dumping fossilised dinosaurs on their heads, locking them in silos with detonating nuclear weapons, and of course leaping down and crushing their heads. Take that, Ensign Nobody.
