Game Chronicles
My last few parting words are these: Go buy this game, especially if you've never played the first! New players won’t be disappointed with the fun that this game generates, and even though it doesn’t have any new earth shattering features than the original, fans of the original will still find plenty to love about this sequel. Who knows, the next version may have multi-player capability, 3D graphics and a Sandbox Mode to really up the ante and take this series where it needs to go.

Sawyer's ambition to increase the boundaries of Rollercoaster Tycoon with his new code means that instead of having produced a new game in its own right, he has produced a new basis upon which to stretch the ideas further. It's wider, slightly bigger, and certainly hugely tweaked, and it leaves lots of room for greater and more complex expansion packs in the near future - the original ran out of room in this regard. But for now, can we just call this Rollercoaster Tycoon 1.6?

Those of you who don't find the existing scenarios challenging enough, the game ships with a scenario editor which is not overly easy to use, but substantially increases the replay value nevertheless. Oh, and one more thing; I cannot remember when I last played a game that didn't even bother to ask me where I want to install it and went directly for "C:\". I really hated this, especially as I didn't have too much space on C drive to begin with. Titles like this always had an audience, which guarantees success for Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 as well. The basic idea of the original game has been expanded by introducing more new possibilities (coaster and scenario editors, new coasters, etc.), while still retaining all of the original's good ... and bad features.

So let the backlash begin. I know it's coming despite the point that I still like Roller Coaster Tycoon regardless of its age and freely say that. Just realize that when you go out and buy this game that you shouldn't expect a new game. You should expect to see a game that looks and plays like it was made 3 1/2 years ago.

In RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, you can now build your own structures from a variety of walls and roofs, but this new scenery often highlights the limitations of the 2D engine. It's very satisfying when it finally comes together, but fitting overlapping pieces together is often an exercise in trial and error. An "undo" option to backup from a mistake would have taken a lot of the frustration out of playing with RollerCoaster Tycoon 2's new scenery.

Had men hier drieënhalf jaar voor nodig?

Does little to improve on the original but does not fault it either. Plays pretty much like the original.

But in general, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2's parks won't seem very lively to you, especially if you've played the original game. It's entirely possible that if the developer had taken a lot of risks and changed the RollerCoaster Tycoon formula radically, it might have angered the game's many fans around the world. But unfortunately, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 seems to go in the opposite direction, making hardly any significant changes or additions to a formula that has been incredibly successful but has remained largely unchanged for years. If you've never played a RollerCoaster Tycoon game before, you won't be amazed by the graphics, but you'll likely find RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 to be as colorful and charming as the original game was to its fans. However, if you've played the original game, you'll find that RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is successful in some aspects, but ultimately isn't a fulfilling sequel to one of the best computer games of the past decade.

All the themed buildings and rides are wonderful additions, with one major drawback: they can't be used outside their matching scenario in other scenarios! While it is true that the scenario editor can be used to design a scenario and place these items inside said scenario, this is a clunky method of utilizing these items. I should be able to place any of the new items inside any of the scenarios from the original RCT2, without having to make a new scenario.

I’m seriously torn about this game. I’ve played the first Rollercoaster Tycoon and all its expansion packs absolutely to death. I’m not an expert; I don’t wring every last penny out of my park, and my maintenance people don’t even mow the lawns, and I’ve never, under any circumstances, forgone sex. And yet, by Loopy Landscapes it was all starting to run a little thin. The graphics started to look tired, and there’s only so much vomit you can mop up before it ceases to be fun. I don’t know why they released this game and called it Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.
