Frankly, Rune kicks butt. It's easily the best hack n' slash game out there, chock full of bladed mayhem that offers an exemplary answer to the age old question: "What is best in life?"

A real joy to play, with an intense story and enough action to whet any gamers appetite. Well worth your gaming dollar.

Rune is an excellent game that's as enjoyable as anything and worth every penny of its $40 price tag. For parents concerned about content, the violence and gore can be turned off, something that should put a few minds at ease. Truly a joy to play, find an excuse to splurge this Valentine's Day even if you have someone special to devote the funds towards. It's that good.

I, being of Viking descent, had a particular interest in Rune. Hoping that it wouldn’t suck, I loaded it on my machine, expecting the worst. The instant the game began, I knew this would be one for the All-Time Best vault. Rune kicks ass on so many levels, it’s hard to pick just a few. Cinematically, this game swept me off my feet. The beginning sequence is truly something to be seen (if you’re a self-respecting PC gamer). Gameplay and graphics are easy and engrossing respectively, while the seamless FMV comes at all the right times. The Rune powers may be a bit on the so-so side, but the weapon and armor designs make up for it. The realism of the different weapons, coupled with the subtle and incredibly effective sounds, add depth where many hack n’ slashers are particularly lacking. Rune is a well designed, well planned, and well implemented romp. Be a berserker, buy this game.

Rune is a fun game. It’s not overly fun and addictive, but it’s still pretty cool. It’s not a Viking version of Quake - it’s more like a Viking version of Tomb Raider. Ragnar’s no Lara Croft, but he definitely kicks some major butt. On to a glorious death and Valhalla, my fellow warriors!

Overall, I would be crazy not to recommend this game to the fans of the genre. Bottom line -- Rune immerses players into an intricate game world! What more could a fan ask for? I got sucked in and wouldn't let go for two straight days of playing; and we're talking 'my girlfriend wants to dump me 'cause I prefer my PC to sex' playing time. Ahh, you know what I'm talking about. At least I hope you do, or otherwise (cough), I might consider myself a pathetic sociopath, or something...

As a solo game, Rune is a blast. It will keep you engrossed, puzzled and even frustrated for weeks. It has the atmosphere and level design to keep you creeping along with a terrible feeling in the pit of your stomach; you are confronted by seemingly impossible obstacles that make you feel truly triumphant when you conquer them. But you have to be persistent, and save often! The number of save slots is limited, but you can work around this by moving older saves to a separate folder. Multiplayer support is a bonus, but not a reason to buy the game. Even LAN games suffer from an unbalanced weapon set and mediocre maps. Although future mods and maps might change or fix these problems, it is clear that solo play was the focus of Human Head’s design team.

Not that any of that is a huge problem. Rune is a brawny game without a huge emphasis on brains - although Viking warriors toward the end of the game are challenging enough. There's a lot of visceral, visual enjoyment here - a near-perfect antidote to a long workday.

I have to say that it's refreshing to finally see a decent game based on Norse mythology. All in all, Rune is a fun little title that adds a bit of creativity to the monotonous action/shooter genre, but it does get repetitive and it has its share of frustrating moments. While it's certainly a feast for the eyes as well as the fingers, it seems the designers at Human Head thought up four or five really good tricks and used them again and again and again.

Overall Rune does get a thumbs up from me, I enjoyed this game. While I think it could have used a little something more in the single player, the graphics, combat, and weapons really shine. Now if they just could have improved on some of the sound effects (come on guys, did you just lift them off some shareware CD?). If you think you can take me in a deathmatch, I’ll cya online!

There is little reason for fans of Rune to check out Rune: Viking Warlord, except for the chance to battle their friends in the four-player split-screen modes. PlayStation 2 owners on the look out for an intense action adventure should definitely be entertained with the game for a while, though. Rune: Viking Warlord is a long, epic adventure that has a few problems here and there, but still stays entertaining.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
Along with the explicit gore, which even goes so far as to allow you to decapitate a foe then use the head as a weapon, Rune’s graphical appeal is dark and decrepit, yet beautiful. Even though it doesn’t live up to expectations, Rune has a bewitching charm to it. Action fans will surely get into it, but as a whole, Rune truly is the personification of mediocrity.

WindowsGamezilla
With the Unreal engine and a hack and slash deathmatch multiplayer setting, there are several redeeming features to this initial offering from Human Head Studios. However, without a well-developed plot to lure you on and with redundant combat exercises to challenge and improve your ability, this is one Action title that may be best to pass on.

WindowsEurogamer.net (UK)
But at the end of the day, Rune is still one of the best third person action games currently available. Its stunning graphics put most other third person games to shame, the ferocious hand-to-hand combat makes for a more visceral experience than is usual in this rather stale genre, and the heavy dose of Norse mythology provides an interesting and unique setting for the game. Fun and blood-soaked in equal measures, and with a truly epic scope. Just don't expect too much from it.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
If you are looking for a fun action game without a whole lot of story to get in the way of the bloodshed, Viking Warlord definitely delivers. If you are looking for a little more brains with your brawn, there are better alternatives. Personally, I would rent this game and play until I got bored.

WindowsGame Informer Magazine
When Ragnar isn't killing something, he's usually trying to find a switch, navigate a series of tricky jumps, or simply figure out where the heck the entrance is to the next area. This is one aspect of the game I'm not exactly blown away by. While some of the puzzles are fairly interesting, most of it’s pretty standard Tomb Raider/FPS stuff. Thank Odin you don't have to push blocks around. I had also hoped there would be a little more story to accompany the incredible artistry. If the developers had done a better job of capturing the essence of Norse mythology, rather than using it as a pretty backdrop for a hack n’ slasher, it could have been a much more interesting experience.

WindowsGamekult

PlayStation 2GameSpy
Rune: Viking Warlord will most likely appeal to fans of the PC title and those looking for a straight forward hack-and-slash game. It's good filler game while waiting for future titles, and will provide adequate gaming experience. The split screen multi-player can be a lot of fun when you get the hang of the controls. Over all it is a decent game, with both good and bad points. Nothing to wait in line for though, and not one you're likely to lose sleep over.
68
WindowsComputerGamers.com
Rune is entertaining for what it is worth, but your money might be better spent waiting until this one hits the discount bin. Just as a side note, Rune has set the stage for Blade of Darkness to take up the slack. It will be interesting to see if Blade of Darkness has what it takes to fulfill the promise made by Rune.
67
WindowsGameSpot
The best platform action games introduce a series of player skills and then gradually force the player to combine them in a long sequence of increasingly complex tasks. Rune introduces a simple skill, puts that skill to a simple test, and then keeps repeating the test for 20 straight hours. It's an undeniably beautiful-looking experience created by a team of skilled technicians. And that makes Rune's failings, as a game, even more disappointing.
62
PlayStation 2Gamezilla
A game that looks like it could have been put out on the PlayStation, with poor controls, zero character development and below par graphics, Rune is a hollow shell of what could have been a sleeper hit. Yes, it does have some redeeming qualities, but they pale in comparison to its major faults. If you must play this game, rent it first. But, I can’t really recommend that either.
60
WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
It’s a close call here. I guess I recommend Rune because the smooth controls, gorgeous maps and substantial content are worth it. There is something spirited about slicing a bloodied path through the undead and becoming a master of Asgard. But a lot of the substance crucial to current third-person action titles is missing, and at the end there’s a sense that the game should have been better. The combat schematic is too simplified, and although this will benefit less experienced users, veterans will scorn the handholding. Also, the impact of the problematic AI cannot be overstated; it undermines the challenge essential to good melee combat. Human Head’s first title is not a collapsing ruin, and although it can be entertaining, it is missing the strong foundation needed to capture one’s long-term interest.
60
MacintoshmacHOME
Rune provides great melee mayhem, but it lacks cohesion. It could have been much more, but it’s an entertaining novelty and still worth a look.
60
PlayStation 2PSM
If you can suspend your disbelief, the single-player game progresses nicely through the epic story with plenty of frantic action and cryptic cutscenes. The control is quite intuitive after the adequate tutorial and there are plenty of weapons with added rune powers. In all, Rune: Viking Warlord is a decent, although flawed, hack-'n-slash.
60
MacintoshMac Gamer
So there really is nothing wrong with this game. It has perhaps raised the bar on third person action games in terms of research, graphics and complexity. However, you can call me a whiner, but I would have preferred more hacking and slashing than "how the hell am I going to get up to that ledge?"

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
RUNE is more for those who enjoy the journey rather than the fighting along the way. In the end, an evening with RUNE is like a date with someone who is “just a friend”; it can be enjoyable at times, but it leaves you longing for something more.

A solid game offering a twisting on the “Doom” genre of random destruction, but without the depth of “Halflife” or the intensity of “Quake”.

PlayStation 2Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
If there was ever a culture destined for video game greatness, the Vikings were most assuredly it. Certainly, third-person shooters seem like an ideal mix with these brawny Northmen, and Rune: Viking Warlord manages to create a blend of the genre with Viking lore. The blender must be dull, however, since the end results will only have appeal to those who’ve been simply dying for a good Viking game, and no others. Visually, this title appears impaired, since muddy textures, blocky characters and choppy frame rates have no place on the PS2. In terms of gameplay, there’s even less to like, as the same repetitive switch flipping and monster bashing soon becomes tedium. While some may choose not to believe me and still get their dose of goblin bashing with Rune: Viking Warlord, trust this reviewer’s suspicion that Loki had much more to do with this game’s construction than the noble Odin.

PlayStation 2PSX Extreme
By now, if you're too stupid to notice, this review is telling you to stay the hell away from Rune. It's one videogame that should've been cancelled, and Human Head needs to seriously get their act together if they want to survive in the console world. Featuring some of the blandest PS2 visuals, and a story that's about as boring as it could possibly be, Rune: Viking Warlord is one of those games, we'll all pretend never happened. It's a debacle from start to finish, even though I couldn't stand playing the game for more than 20 minutes. It just reeks of pre-first generation, and a rushed cash-in attempt, although I really don't see how a low-key PC title can really cash-in in the console world. I'm not the one to be saying this, but it needs to be said. A word of advice to Take-Two/Rockstar: try to stick with what you've got, successful formulas such as Midnight Club, Smuggler's Run and Grand Theft Auto. Let's not ruin a great image with flops such as City Crisis and Rune.

PlayStation 2Game Revolution
Rune: Viking Warlord is a big disappointment, a shoddy port that suffers due to both the limitations of its new platform and its technical pitfalls. We haven't seen too many PC-to-console ports lately, though with the upcoming release of the Xbox it's bound to happen. By Odin's blood, let's hope developers learn a lesson or two from Rune's mistakes.
