Ubisoft has knocked the ball out of the park with this blend of old school gaming action and new school trimmings. Get together with three of your buddies and prepare to have a blast.

As much as I love this game, as enthralling as it may be, it’s not going to be for everyone. I understand that – I’m preaching to the converted. And while the old gamers like me and mine will love it, and most of the retro gamers will probably enjoy it, the younger kids will probably find it frustrating and/or boring (younger, of course, being anyone born in 1990 or after – don’t argue with me). It suffers from the same pitfalls that all brawlers, as a rule, do; your thumbs will turn to Jell-O and you’ll piss off your upstairs neighbor with constant laughing/yelling. But, I’m still playing it. I’ve beaten it three times, and it’s a get-together waiting to happen every weekend, and it’s not getting any less distracting as time goes on.

The graphics are brilliant – a love letter to the golden days of 8- and 16-bit artwork, through a distinctly modern lens (worth noting here that the pixel art is by Australian Paul Robertson, who also worked with 5th Cell on Drawn to Life and Lock's Quest). The soundtrack is everything you'd hoped for (and more - chip-tune legends Anamanaguchi are onboard, bleeping, blooping and generally rockin' out all over the place). It's funny. It's challenging. It's brilliant. Even if you haven't read the comics and you haven't seen the film and you have very little interest in doing either, you still want to download this game and play it. Trust me.

After the Sex Bob-Ombs played their last song and the curtains have closed on Scott Pilgrim’s quest for love, the experience I had reminds me of my glory days at the arcade at the local mall. The days when $5 would grant me access to such classic beat’em ups such as the Simpsons Arcade game and Final Fight. The days when gaming wasn’t all about graphics and having a multi-million dollar budget. If you’re looking for classic side-scrolling beat’em up action, along with a blasting soundtrack, tough yet rewarding game play, and plenty of character, you can’t go wrong with Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

While the game is great fun as a single-player experience, it truly shines when you team up with friends. Whether you’re working together to figure out a boss pattern or hogging all the Canadian coins, multiplayer is a blast. The only problem? There is absolutely no online play. How was that feature left out in this day and age? I would have gladly paid an extra $5 over the $10 asking price for this feature. Picturing my friends list full of people playing this awesome game and not being able to team up just hurts.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: the Game is a must-have for anyone who has ever loved beat ‘em ups - especially River City Ransom. It’s the best downloadable beat ’em up on the market, and has everything great about the genre, but has raised the bar for the genre by offering up more gameplay variety and delivering one of the best soundtracks you’ve heard this gen. At $10, it’s a great deal on the PlayStation Network, and when it hits the Xbox Live Arcade soon, try it out ASAP.

None of that should stop you from playing the game if you liked the comic or the movie or any brawler ever, since this game looks good, sounds good and has great gameplay for the genre. There are so many little details and references packed into the levels that you will see something new each time you go through, and the protagonists all have enough unique traits to make 4 trips through the streets of Toronto well worth the time invested. Since you can get this game for less than the price of a ticket to the movie, I give Scott Pilgrim vs. The World two thumbs up!

SPvTW is one of those games that will click with gamers of a certain age. All the subtle referencing and celebration of gaming’s retro past (I don't want to spoil the subspace zones) works well in SPvTW’s favor. It is hard to believe this game only clocks in at such a low price. What is probably more remarkable, that never once did the thought cross my mind this game was tied to a movie. Absolutely no context is needed to take this thrill ride that tours all the best parts of gaming’s romanticized history and love every second of it.

A labor of love to an arcade genre mainstay, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is a stellar achievement on numerous levels: Not only is it an enjoyable, pitch-perfect retro-inspired experience in its own right, but its somehow escaped the nigh-mandatory shackles other "comic-to-game" and "game-to-movie" titles have so suffered from. As a "comic-to-movie-to-game" of sorts, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a resounding triumph, and well worth its measly $10 price-tag.

As far as beat ‘em ups go Scott Pilgrim vs. The Word is a dream come true. It’s the rare old-school title that embraces its retro roots but justifies its classic, antiquated game design. The initial slow pacing will likely turn away players that are just looking to pound a few skulls and the lack of online play will be a sticking point for many, but these are silly, minor excuses to not play one of the finest brawlers in years.

Perhaps the most notable omission is online co-op but given the game’s old school nature I wasn’t too bothered by its absence. Especially since there are dozens of current-gen games that support online co-op and very few that celebrate good old fashioned brawler co-op as was popular in the 8 and 16 bit eras. If you truly love console gaming, then Scott Pilgrim is a nostalgic treat that is pure condensed fun.

With a price point of just $9.99 I absolutely recommend this game! If you are a Scott Pilgrim fan you will enjoy it much more, and if you just love video games in general this is a great purchase. If you don’t like the genre, then by all means steer clear; however, if you are even slightly curious check out the demo and see what you think! As a fan of the IP, I want to give this game an 11/10, but as an objective reviewer, I feel it’s certainly worth an 8.5/10

Even if you aren't entirely interested in this hipster hero's quest for love, this excellent pastiche will reaffirm your love of classic beat 'em ups. Outstanding music and visuals from artist Paul Robertson and chiptune band Anamanaguchi certainly don't hurt, either. The lack of online play is a shame, but if you've been looking for a great follow-up to Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World should not be passed up.

PlayStation 3The A.V. Club
Even for those who aren’t Scott-aholics or retro-game obsessives, Scott Pilgrim is one of the best downloadable games available on home consoles, worth it simply for the solid play, the incredible sprite work from Paul Robertson and Stéphane Boutin, and the bitchin’ soundtrack by Anamanaguchi.

PlayStation 31UP
And that highlights Scott Pilgim's real problem: the lack of any online multiplayer. If you want to play with friends, they have to be sitting on the couch in the same room with you. And if someone comes up and wants to join a game in progress, you have to exit out to the main menu to bring them in. You can't have friends jumping into a brawl mid-level. As a nostalgia-inducing romp through colorful worlds, Scott Pilgrim is a great time-waster. But even if you're not a twenty-to-thirty-something with fond memories of River City Ransom (or a huge fan of the Scott Pilgrim comic/movie), the detailed art and driving soundtrack from Anamanaguchi should be more than enough reason to give this retro-inspired brawler a try.

PlayStation 3Cheat Code Central
Playable licensed games seem to be rare these days, and even when you have a good game based on existing material, it usually doesn’t stay relevant for long. What sets Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World apart is that it forgets it is based on a movie/comic and, much like this year’s 3D Dot Game Heroes, plays like a love letter to all your favorite games from the past. At ten dollars, this game is a steal, and is well worth the price of entry. Between the single-player RPG-like experience and the frenzied co-op mode, there is something for everyone in Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. Though I can’t vouch for the quality of the upcoming movie, the game is solid and its players can count on having some fun with this one.

PlayStation 3Digital Chumps
At its core, Scott Pilgrim is still just an upgraded version River City Ransom, but its polish and sense of style aims to keep players engaged, nostalgic, and smiling. Never trying to do more than it sets out to do, the game offers a fine balance of presentation and gameplay mechanics. There is perhaps no beat ‘em up in history that does what Scott Pilgrim does: leave you with an itch for more.

Of course, most of my complaints can rightly be identified as nitpicks. Certainly, they shouldn't dissuade you from downloading this game if you're excited by the promise of a competent action brawler. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World does nearly everything just the way that it should, provides a bunch of interesting locations, a rocking soundtrack, charming and detailed graphics and enough character customization to keep you busy for hours. It feels extremely dated, but that's intentional and completely okay. After all, there were some things about gaming in the 80s and 90s that totally ruled. Scott Pilgrim is here to remind you what they were. And to get with the girl, admittedly, but I like to think that it's mostly the first thing.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World could be called River City Ransom 2 for a post-modern audience, but we’re not snobs like that. Instead, let’s say that just like the movie and comics, Scott Pilgrim the game speaks perfectly to a specific generation of people that will absolutely enjoy this breezy blast from the past. And anyone who’s wanted a new yet classic brawler will be satisfied by this no matter how they feel about Scott Pilgrim getting a life.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is really enjoyable, even if at times it can be really frustrating. The music is incredible and it has an amazing style unlike anything else out there. If only it had online co-op. But it doesn't. And so, while really cool, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is far from perfect.

Scott Pilgrim "captures the energy of a generation," said a widely quoted Publishers Weekly review of the second graphic novel back in 2005. It seems that the same is now true of the game, not in the sense that it embraces today's geeky indie kids, but in the sense that it embraces third generation 8-bit gaming with such exuberance and attention to detail that you won't stop playing until it's totalled.

PlayStation 3Game Chronicles
That does not mean that the game does not receive my recommendation, though. I think more film-to-game adaptations should be handled like this. No need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on huge licenses to create games that are too big to be built in such a short period of time. Make a small game, give it a lot of heart (or in Pilgrim’s case, a metric ton of heart) and release it at a reasonable price. If you don’t like classic beat ‘em ups, I tentatively recommend this game with the qualifier that you need a few friends to play with. If you do enjoy classic beat ‘em ups -- then why are you still sitting here reading this?

Scott Pilgrim is definitely a niche game that is appealing to a specific audience, much like the movie itself. If you don't enjoy old-school looks, repetitive gaming and blips for music, then you obviously aren't the one this game is aimed at. However, if those things give you goose bumps and memories of beating up the same enemy over and over then Scott Pilgrim is your game. For ten bucks it is hard to argue with such passion. Now if we could only get a patch to help with the co-op mode.

SPvTW:TG also offers some good incentives for replay. Not only is the game just a good one to casually sit down and play on a whim, you’ll also want to reach full-level-up status for each of the four characters, save up for all the expensive goodies in the shops, unlock additional characters, and even some new game modes, including a Survival Horror mode, where you take on hoardes of zombies. Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is also incredibly good value: it’s currently going for less than 20 bucks, via download on the Playstation Network. There’s also a demo you can download if you’re still not sure. I give it 8/10 for a well-executed idea, great presentation, wicked soundtrack, and solid replayability. You should definitely check it out.

Of course, just as people who don’t play games tend to miss a bunch of clever references in the books, those of you who’ve not read the books are going to miss stuff in the game, too. It’s not essential to have read the books before playing the game, but a lot of things aren’t going to make any sense. Why were all those people dead when I walked into that concert? Why did that skateboard appear and then just vanish without letting me use it? And why is that guy getting harassed by the Vegan Police? Wait – Vegan Police? Still, if you’ve not read the books, that’s your problem, not the game’s. Sort your life out, man. Then buy this game. It’s effing great.

So yeah, I don't care that Scott Pilgrim doesn't have online play. I also don't really care about the balance issues and the bugs. I love this game. It pushes all the right buttons for me. It stands along Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Cave Story on my "favorite game of 2010" list in a three-way tie. It's a game that I can pick up and play at any time, start on any level, and still have a hell of a time regardless. The last level is particularly awesome. Every Mega Man 2 super-fan needs to play it at least once in their lives. That said, I can't give the game the near-perfect score that reflects my subjective experience with it. The game drops below the modern standard in too many objectively observable areas. If they patch the bugs, fix the balance, and add online play, this game could be a perfect 10. For now, it can only score a...

Though I really enjoy this game, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is almost too retro for its own good. Even on the lowest difficulty setting, playing the game is at times a chore. If you happen to have a few friends over, the burden lessens, but only marginally. Devout fans of the character will find a lot to like, as will die-hard side-scroller enthusiasts, but newcomers turned onto everything Pilgrim thanks to the movie may find themselves overwhelmed. It’s a good game, but it’s core audience is a niche within a niche, and I think that by making the game an homage to the games of yesterday, they missed the mark ever so slightly.

And yet, because the series is a tribute to 20-year-old gaming culture, any actual videogame born from this universe is subject to those restraints. For this reason, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is pretty much the perfect Scott Pilgrim game, hitting all the notes that fans of the series and its worldview could want. But for those who couldn't tell an Envy Adams from a Julie Powers (pity them), it's little more than a cute parody game, meticulously detailed, but outdated by design.

Still, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game makes for one of the better movie-based games out there. It carries its homage to old beat 'em up games a little too far, forgoing online play and a consistent checkpoint system, especially for a game that's not meant to be played by yourself. But if you have some friends to share a couch, it's a fantastic $10 downloadable that will remind you of the good ol' days, for a night or two.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is a downloadable title that has little to do with the movie starring Michael Cera. Instead, it's a homage to '90s side-scrolling beat 'em ups and the graphic novels of Bryan Lee O'Malley. Retro fans will feel acknowledged and loved but everyone else may miss the hype.

You can finish the game in just a few hours, but there is still replay value for people craving more face-punching action. Unlocking the extra characters takes a bit of time and skill. There are also hidden shops, branching paths, and multiple endings, and it's fun to replay levels to find all of their secrets. Despite the healthy replay value, endearing visuals, and classic gameplay, there are some problems in Scott Pilgrim that are difficult to overlook. The lack of online support is not only puzzling in the modern era, but downright annoying if you want to play with long-distance pals, and the fact that you can't even jump into a friend's game midlevel puts up another barrier to entry. Furthermore, things are so cluttered with four players that just staying alive is a trial. These blemishes certainly tarnish the experience, but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is still a fun brawler at its heart.

Dommage.

I’ve always loved beat em ups. Whether it was playing 'River City Ransom' on my NES or hanging out at the arcade playing 'X-Men,' they’ve always held a special place in my heart. When I look back on it, the thing that made them so great was always the ability to play them with a friend. Unfortunately, Ubisoft forgot this important fact when they made this game and have made playing with a friend way too difficult. There’s a fairly good game here that’s just marred by a terrible co-op system. If you create a game thats geared towards co-op, its probably a good idea to make playing together as easy and seamless as possible.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is a great homage to beat-em-ups of old that plays well, but is hurt by a few technical issues and gameplay missteps. Amazing pixel art and a rocking chip tune soundtrack complete the package, but the omission of online co-op will sours the experience for those with modern gaming standards.

PlayStation 3Gaming Age
Despite my own complaints and seeing some glitches (such as a few enemies become untouchable-yet-harmless within battles), Scott Pilgrim is a solid romp in a 2-D world of memory and current-day pop culture. It is carefully designed with little touches such as tile on a floor trailing off into Tetris block patterns, the Super Mario Bros 3 worldmap, and various character/NPC animations are top notch. As my greatest gripe being that multiplayer is necessary largely to enjoy the game based on difficulty, Scott Pilgrim The Game's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. If it is at all possible for online co-op to be patched in then it needs to happen ASAP, because the thought put into the game's design and world are the real points I commend it for at this time. Once I get a chance to run through with a buddy, my opinion may change, but that doesn't change the situation for players in my shoes.

Scott Pilgrim isn't as fun as it could have been, but at least its heart is in the right place. Fans of the comic can bump up the grade by a letter because of its faithfulness to the source material, which is outstanding.
