Sea Rogue

aka: Sea Rogue: An International Quest For Sunken Treasure
Moby ID: 7512

Description official descriptions

In Sea Rogue you assume command of a five person treasure hunting team that searches possible underwater sites for sunken treasure and artifacts. Sea Rogue allows the player to train the crew for different roles, for example divers that search the wreck while trying to stay out of the way of sharks, scientists that conduct research and examine historical artifacts and engineers that take care of the mechanical operation of your ship or submarine. Real-life shipwrecks are present in the game, including the Titanic. Of course, you have a rival for most of the game who is known as 'Evil Eddy' - the richest man in the world - and the goal of the game is to beat Eddy by becoming rich enough to purchase the ultimate submarine: the Sea Rogue.

A Classic Sim

The Good
With such varied gameplay, it's a wonder this game originally came on 8 1/4" floppies. There isn't any real main objective (beyond becoming 1st in the Wreck Finder rankings, perhaps), so it's a game that really is defined by the player; something aided by how its RPG elements allow you to create/train your crew and configure your ship from the ground up.

There's really something special in how you can cross the Atlantic to pinpoint a site, recover the treasure, appraise it, sell it, and get a commendation from the wreck's country of origin.

Simply a fun sim you won't find duplicated.

The Bad
The manual is near essential for wreck research (and even ID, before one purchases the Auto-ID computer). Luckily, this resource has been digitally saved, so I'm sure dedicated fans can seek it out in .pdf form.

The sound is terrible and really doesn't serve much purpose except to deliver alerts.

The Bottom Line
"Solid" is certainly a word I'd use to describe this game. Its broad gameplay and utterly unique take on deep-sea treasure hunting is both fascinating and engaging.
