AH-3 Thunderstrike

So it's not a flight sim - no big deal. Despite a few annoying quirks, it flies like a dream. Thunderstrike is hardcore action at its finest.

Realistic sound and intense 3-D simulation make this the best helicopter shooter for any system. With ten unique operations to choose from and 360 degrees in which to fly. AH-3 Thunderstrike has great replay value. Truly an intense experience. Highly recommended.

Chopper jockeys will love the game. The missions average about four stages each, which should keep you going without boring you to tears. The game is also challenging enough to keep your attention span fresh. Thunderstrike is ready for any impossible mission.

Ändå saknar jag vissa saker i spelet. Efter ett fullbordat uppdrag gäller det till exempel bara att flyga över en streckad linje. Själv hade jag korsat linjen av misstag flera gånger under pågående uppdrag, kommit till debriefingen och fått en fet "FAILED"-stämpel i mina papper. Irriterande! Varför inte stoppa in en landningssekvens i spelet? Dessutom efterlyser jag en karta när man sitter i helikoptern. Visserligen får man en slags kartbild på sin radar, men en översiktskarta med uppdragsbeskrivning vore att föredra. Med dessa detaljer åtgärdade - kanske i Thunderhawk II - skulle spelet utan tvivel få betyg fem.

Even without gargantuan boss encounters or vast gameplay diversity, AH-3 Thunderstrike provides some of the strongest action available on the Sega CD. Pick it up and discover for yourself why critics and journalists used to care about Core.

What saves this antiquated shooter from the bottom of the barrel is its simple, arcade-style gameplay. Targets are locked onto automatically, surrounded by red brackets and labeled "primary" when applicable. Thunderstrike contains a few obligatory CGI cut-scenes, but their gee-whiz factor has long since faded. You can save your progress after each mission, and there's also a high score board. Hard on the eyes and lacking excitement, AH-3 Thunderstrike is one of the more forgettable entries in the Sega CD library.
