When all is said and done, Sonic CD is everything you could want in a Sonic game and more. The developers have made great use of the CD format, and managed to build a terrific Sonic game around it. It's nothing revolutionary, but it does stick to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. The bottom line is, if you're a Sonic fan, you absolutely must own this game. It's easily one of the best titles you can buy for the Sega CD system, and will keep any Sonic fan grinning ear to ear.

Speedy yet crystalline, with a hypnotic techno-rave soundtrack, Sonic CD may be the first disc to utilize fully the Sega CD's potential. The game itself, though, in which Sonic pursues his evil, robotized double, is a bit too easy; experienced kids may buzz through it in a couple of days.

The more you play, the more you'll enjoy! Sure, it's the same old Sonic, but he's made it to the top for a very good reason. Our 1993 CD Game of the Year.

SEGA-Mag (Objectif-SEGA)

All Game Guide
Easily one of the best games for the system, Sonic CD has the same type of high-speed, hop-spin-and-bop gameplay as Sonic the Hedgehog, but it improves the formula (and the length of the game) by allowing players to time warp to the past and the future within each level.

Sonic CD was released in 1993. A side-scrolling action game like most of the other Sonic games, the famous hedgehog's first CD outing contains some of the fastest and most engrossing gameplay ever. Your goal in the game is to defeat Dr. Robotnik; not only because he turned your animal friends into robots (for the 3 millionth time) but because he has also kidnapped Amy Rose, Sonic's girlfriend (I think she is anyway, damn the game's ambiguous storyline.)

Power Unlimited

This game is a ball! Sega CD owners finally have a good game to look for. There are tons of levels with cool effects, and the ability to travel into the past and future adds even more to an already great game.

Defunct Games
Sonic CD is the first REAL reason to own a Sega CD (outside of Snatcher, which came later). Nintendo has known from the get go that they NEEDED Mario to launch with systems, and Sega surely needed Sonic to sell systems. Sonic CD, while worth every pennies it costs, isn't a large enough leap, and it's a little too late.

IMPLANTgames
Sonic CD is a great Sonic game and is a must have for Sega CD owners. The control is every bit as responsive as a Sonic game should be. The graphics and sound are top notch, and have a unique futuristic techno feel not seen in the cartridge releases of Sonic. You can whiz through the levels or take your time and explore, destroying Eggman’s Machines and seeing the alternative futures. The excellent CD soundtrack and fun bonus stages are the icing on the cake.

The Video Game Critic
Compared to its predecessors, this is a major disappointment. That said, on a system wired with so many mediocre full-motion video games, this sub-par Sonic is still one of the better titles for the Sega CD.
