All things considered, I am absolutely thrilled with this collection. No question about it, Sega Genesis Collection has enough material to keep a gamer busy for a very long time. Back in the day, I would have sold a kidney for this one. See my Sega Genesis section for individual reviews of many of these titles.

The SEGA Mega Drive Collection has literally months' worth of gameplay packed into that little UMD and so longevity will not be an issue - add in the number of two player games and it should keep you and a friend occupied for a long while too. Once you have completed a number of challenges you can also open dozens of extra features, including interviews with notable SEGA developers, previews of the new Phantasy Star and Virtua Fighter games and even a further five extra games, which vary in quality and sadly are not Streets of Rage or Earthworm Jim as I had hoped. As with all Greatest Hits collections, there are many that are missing - Afterburner, Space Harrier, OutRun, Wonderboy, Hang On, Rocket Knight Adventures, Super Monaco GP and many more, but hopefully that means a second volume may be in the works.

Keep in mind, this is not a “greatest hits” set, nor is it just a random shot of cheap nostalgia like other collections. That isn't the point of Sega Genesis Collection. SGC is a celebration of the Sega Genesis platform and all it had to offer, opening up a vault of both revered and obscure classics for all to enjoy. It is not about major successes and wildly-popular titles, though it includes more than enough of those to satisfy. SGC is instead about epitomizing the entire platform on a single UMD, allowing gamers to go back and experience the Sega Genesis for what it was, and not just what it made. That makes this the first collection disc of its kind, and rest assured, it is the perfection of the formula to such a degree that Sega may have severely under priced it. To be blunt, Sega Genesis Collection is the definition of essential gaming, and it has a rightful place on the shelves of any PSP owner looking for an inexpensive and high-quality addition to their library.

Sega Genesis Collection is a pile of awesome with whipped cream and a cherry on top. You have got to get it for your PSP and that's all there is to it. It's like waking up on Christmas morning to find a stack of nearly 30 games under the tree.

Even if you're a mild retro fan or have a faint interest in playing titles you've missed, this is the new standard for compilations. The games choices are nearly flawless, the extras are worth unlocking and the games look stunning. It's hard to imagine a run of games on a single disc beating out this roster

Going back and playing as that little blue hedgehog from my childhood was enough to sell me on this game. On top of that I had the pleasure of playing Golden Axe, and Virtua Fighter 2 along with many of the other games that I played as a child. This could possibly be one of my favorite PSP titles on the market.

With plenty of unlockable extras, a strong line-up of games and virtually faultless emulation, Sega Mega Drive Collection is easily one of the finest retro collections in years. The ability to save your progress at any point is a fantastic addition, especially on the PSP, and low loading times and wi-fi multiplayer really adds to the experience. With its low price point its well worth a go, whether you’re a veteran of the 16-bit era or you’re too young to remember atime when all you had to play with was three buttons, a d-pad and no force feedback. This is exactly the sort of blast from the past we can live with… Flicky or no Flicky.

All in all, this is a great compilation. I recommend it to anyone who has never experienced the Genesis [or the embrace of a live woman - ed.] The replay value is endless, and the save anywhere feature makes these games great for someone who doesn't have 4 hrs a day to devote to gaming, like the typical college student. If you have any love for retro gaming in you, you owe to yourself to at least rent this game.

Sega Genesis Collection is easily the best assemblage of Sega games you can find on PS2. Though the presentation isn't quite as strong as I'd like, the sheer number of quality games makes any missteps forgivable. The graphics, while 16-bit, are as crisp and attractive as possible. If you are a fan of the Genesis, this is one collection that can't be missed. There's no doubt that at least 10 of the 32 games included will suck away a few dozen hours of your time. At $20, this a bargain almost impossible to pass up.

When it comes to classic compilations, the Genesis Collection features a far superior “good-to-bad ratio” when it comes to the selections. Despite a couple of omissions, this title will give you plenty of hours of classic gaming at an extremely affordable $19.99 price tag.

Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP is a dream come true for those who loved the incredible lineup of titles that made the Genesis such a great console. With a collection that includes such classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighters 2 and Altered Beast (to name a few of the best) this is a compilation game you will certainly want to own right away if you love the classics.

The Sega Genesis collection doesn't have a lot of new game play ideas or amazing 3D graphics, but you don't need that in a collection of 10+ year old games. What we are given are 28 games that are just as fun to play today as they were before Sony and Microsoft entered the fray. Not every game in this collection is worthwhile, but there's enough here to keep you busy for a long, long time go come. Regardless of whether you're already a fan of this era of gaming or you want to see what everybody was playing before the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, the Sega Genesis Collection is an amazing disc full of memorable games. Outside of adding more games, it's hard to think of anything Sega could have done to make this a better deal. If you're the type of person who wants to pack a lot of games on the go then you can't do much better than the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP.

The Sega Genesis Collection is one of the most satisfying, well-put-together classic game compilations to date. That it's available for a budget price on the PlayStation 2 makes it all the more tempting, though being able to take these games with you anywhere makes the PSP version a great choice, too. Even if you were an avid fan of the Genesis back in its heyday, chances are you never got around to playing a number of these games, many of which are still quite fun and remarkably challenging even by today's standards. Or, even if the Genesis is before your time or you simply never got one, there's just so much history packed into this collection that it'd be a great choice for anybody interested in video games in general.

If you're into collections or simply looking for a good value, either version of the game is worth your time and money. I'll freely admit that many of the games in the collection are pure garbage, but for the most part, you're getting a wide assortment of games that literally covers the entire Sega Genesis spectrum - with four full length role-playing games to really keep you busy being the crème de la crème! The emulation is amazingly accurate and the games you play in these collections will feel just as they did oh so many years ago - a bit dated, perhaps, but the gameplay and magic of these classics live on and to miss out on a collection such as this would really be a shame. This is a bit of history that should not be missed by anyone and if you weren't part of the Genesis revolution, here's your chance to see what you missed.

Sega Genesis Collection could've been a little better thought out in terms of what games to include in the package, but we won't complain that much here. The bottom line is that this is still a wondrous trip down memory lane, with loads of 16-bit titles to invest hours in all over again. It's almost enough to make you want to go to the flea market and hunt down a lumbering old Sega CD unit. Almost.

Still, having a portable selection of some of the Genesis's better games is better than nothing at all. Sure, not all of the 28 games are all-time classics, and yes, the lack of certain games keeps Sega Genesis Collection from being the definitive compilation many had hoped for, but solid emulation of classics like Sonic 2, Comix Zone and Ristar mean the die-hard Sega fans, who once would have paid over $1,500 for everything on the disc, should have no qualms dropping a mere $29.99 to relive the glory days.

But the crucial aspect of Sega Mega Drive Collection is that it will always be able to fall back on the quality of its games. For veterans, it's a great opportunity to relive some old favourites while perhaps discover the odd title that may have escaped them. But ultimately, it's something that all can enjoy – there's some excellent games on offer, many of them packed with utterly wonderful (and still unique) touches meaning they absolutely stand up to modern scrutiny. Graphics may age, after all, but solid game mechanics rarely do – and here, there's certainly an abundance of that. Quality and quantity, indeed.

While there are plenty of other retro compilations out there vying for your business, Sega Mega Drive Collection arguably offers the most value for money and could quickly become the ideal travel companion for your PSP, as it's a delight to dip in and out of the mostly top notch games included. Some classics, like Streets of Rage, are conspicuous by their absence though, so don't expect to wait too long for a second instalment of retro Mega Drive action.

PSPGamesAreFun.com (GAF)
Some may be puzzled by the exclusion of some titles - Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3 are here, but Revenge of Shinobi is nowhere to be found. The Streets of Rage series is also noticably absent. Perhaps these will be included in a Sega Genesis Collection 2, but for now, just know that the Sega Genesis Collection is well worth your gaming dollar. Buy it.

PlayStation 2PSX Extreme
All in all, the Sega Genesis Collection is exactly what it should be: a fun-filled romp down memory lane for the old-schoolers, and an entertaining glimpse into the past for the younger gaming class. Besides, one of the best new features is something we can all identify with- you can save. Yes, that's right, you can save your progress in any game you select, which is a luxury we certainly never had with the Genesis. And for the budget price of $20, you can bring home 28 games that are displayed in all their initial glory. It's nothing groundbreaking or breathtaking or mouth-on-the-floor fantastic, but as we said from the start, it's not supposed to be. You'll have plenty of fun, and that's what counts.

PSPAll Game Guide
The only complaint is that there are even more Sega standouts still available, such as Streets of Rage, Shining Force, ToeJam & Earl, and the rest of the Sonic games. Hopefully, these will all be addressed in future installments, but in terms of value and quality, consider Sega Genesis Collection a must-have title for your PSP.

In these days of paying over the odds to download crippled Virtual Console games, and pretending not to notice how many Microsoft points are on your credit card, this latest compilation takes on an even greater value and may even - whisper it - encourage a few of us to finally take the original boxes out from under the bed, and consider putting them lovingly in the attic.

If you do the sums you realise that this works out as amazing value for 20 quid. If you can't do the sums perhaps the names Golden Axe, Sonic 1 and 2, Ecco, Alex Kidd, Shinobi and Phantasy Star 2 will help persuade you that this collection really is worth your attention. Recommended.

They're still worth checking out as historical curiosities, though, curiosities that otherwise might have just disappeared. That's an underrated aspect of a retro pack's quality. Like any game software, they're meant to be fun to play, but they're also an important way of preserving gaming history.

This Genesis Collection does that. Some of the selections aren't exactly lasting favorites, and others might not necessarily be for everyone. Take it all together, though, and it's a pretty clear snapshot of what made Sega's 16-bit console worth remembering. It's a great nostalgia trip, an even better history lesson, and hopefully the first in a long series of Genny revivals.

Sega Genesis Collection is a nice reminder of some of Sega's best days as a first-party developer, and the lengthy list of titles on board helps chronicle the console's history as a provider of diverse games. Though there are a few classics missing from the group, the compilation is a nice mini-encyclopedia of games that still carry appeal more than a decade later, and is a good deal at $20 for Sega fans and old school gamers alike, with a few added unlockables granting it a bit more value.

PlayStation 2Game Vortex
SGC is probably a guaranteed winner for anyone who owned a Sega Genesis. The games are simple, but may be too difficult for young kids (who also have bigger, flashier games to hold their attention nowadays). I got a kick out of the extra content, and since it was unlockable, it provides a reward for gameplay, at least for a while. This is a good collection, with some good extras. The only thing I'd ask for are for more games and more extras, but for the price, SGC is not bad.

Maybe if “Sega Genesis Collection” was only the first of a multi-volume compilation I’d be more receptive to the selections presented on this disc. But I take issue with several of these titles being called “classics”. Like most collections (and like most of life), this is a case of a handful of superstars flanked by quite a few ho-hum efforts that should have been sidelined in favor of better games from a wider array of genres.

28 games for $20. Good deal. Granted, not every game as a winner, and the controls feel far less responsive than they should, but overall, there's too much value here for anyone to pass up. Fans of 16-bit gaming should own this already, but for those who always wondered what video games were like before particle effects, this is the collection for you.
