This action-packed helicopter game was available on many systems, but this version is easily the best. It's also the most difficult. Your mission is to rescue hostages in enemy territory while avoiding enemy fire. The graphics are sharp and well defined. From the architecture of the buildings, to the clouds in the sky, to the tiny animated people, there is plenty of attention to detail. A nice surprise is the ocean level, in which you need to rescue prisoners from ships at sea. This is a great idea, and although it plays the same as the land levels, it looks fantastic. As I mentioned before, the difficulty is fairly extreme; you'll take ground fire from cannons, tanks, and jeeps, as well as air fire from enemy planes. You can't stay in any place for long, especially when picking up prisoners. This is one exciting game.
Though Choplifter is not one of the greatest games for the Master System, it's often mentioned in SMS fans' "Top Ten," and I think it deserves a position there despite its faults. It can be fun, a bit annoying, but fun. Not every game could have been perfect, but I'd have to say had Sega made more games of this caliber in the early years of the SMS, it would have done much better in America, possibly placing itself just slightly below the popularity of the NES, instead of way below.
Choplifter doesn’t seem to be remembered much today, despite having a couple sequels portioned to the Game Boy, Game Gear, and SNES in the early 90s. It does hold the distinction of being one of the few, if only, games to begin its life on a computer before being remade for the arcade, then ported back to a home console. What a trippy, overly aggressive journey.
Overall, Choplifter is a decent, but not great, Sega Master System game. The one-hit kills and somewhat clumsy controls keep this from being a classic. The smooth graphics and the unique game play concept make Choplifter better than average, but just barely. I would recommend Choplifter if you can find it for cheap.
