Ghost House is a great little game and has plenty to offer for even the most modern gamer, a feature you don't find very often in older titles. The only issue that really affects everything is the control problem I mentioned above, but other than that this title is nearly flawless. It has a heaping helping of variety and a difficulty setting the most advanced of gamers will have problems adjusting to. It was actually released in two formats, one in cartridge the other in card, but there is no difference in the actual content. Not sure why they did that either. Regardless, this is a core title every Master System fan needs to own and is a prime example of where to begin if you're just starting out.
In closing, Ghost House was one of my first Sega Master System experiences. Though incredibly difficult, the game didn’t feel “cheap”. I felt compelled to play, and try to get further each time that I died. I’d recommend for anyone looking for a challenge on the Sega Master System.
Ghost House has a quirky charm that’s distinctly Sega, but it doesn’t go far enough. Three levels with slightly varied templates and the same basic “Kill Dracula again” objective for each stage feels slight, particularly for a Mark III title. The title Ghost House has unlimited possibilities too, both for monsters to battle and environments to explore. Why stop at Dracula when you could battle Frankenstein, the Wolfman or any one of Universal’s beloved monster backlog? Why limit yourself to a three story house when you could throw in a castle or a graveyard, if only to distinguish the stages from each other? Granted, Ghost House is a Sega Card game with only 32kb of limited space to work with. But limited space doesn’t have to mean limited ideas. Considering the promise Ghost House‘s premise contains, methinks Sega was just being lazy with this one.
All systems deserve to have one good, scary game, but Ghost House isn't scary OR good. It's just a generic platform game with stupid-looking, cartoon monsters. The ghosts look a lot like Kirby of Nintendo fame, which is not a good sign! Your job is to collect the five "family jewels" by defeating five Draculas. Five Draculas? That should set off some alarms right there. And guess how you defeat these five vampires? A wooden stake? Garlic? Holy water? Nah, you just punch them! C'mon, if you're going to make a game about vampires, you have to at least follow the rules! The game has no atmosphere at all and the music is as goofy as the graphics. Control isn't so hot either. Why do I keep falling through the floors?? Ghost House also features some annoying slow-down, and sometimes it will even freeze up for no reason.
