Maze Hunter 3D is an awesome adventure and in my opinion it's worth owning the Sega 3D Glasses just for this game. If it was 2D it would still be fun but the stereoscopic effect makes a huge difference by immersing you in the game world and Sega did a great job getting the best out of the technology.
Waidmanns Heil!
Maze Runner may find an audience that appreciates searching out exits, but isn't this the kind of thing we essentially did in Wolfenstein 3D? And that game actually was 3D, unlike this falsely named product. There are a lot of levels, a decent challenge, and a non-threatening item system, it's perfect for anybody who loves boring, tedious games.
Sound is simple, not living up to the visuals in any way, but the real problem is the generally dull gameplay. Gauntlet
's main excitement is the horde of monsters gradually sapping your energy. A few aliens which can instantly kill you are poor adversaries in comparison.
The graphics are pin sharp and crisply coloured and these factors enhance the 3D effect considerably. The screen scrolls around you and the the gameplay is quite sedate. The real problem with Hunter 3D is that the play is quite repetitive, so although it is luscious to the eye it does not get the heart beating wildly.
Unfortunately, all the nice graphics in the world can't hide the "by-the-numbers" gameplay. All you do is locate a key and find the exit. Sometimes you even need to backtrack, which is a pain. Hitting creatures with your club can be troublesome because you can't aim diagonally. The various stages are attractive, but the scenery (or lack of) makes them uninteresting. There's even the obligatory ice stage. I did like the catchy music however. Maze Hunter 3D is cool at first, but the novelty probably won't last.
Maze Hunter 3-D is a waste of time. The 3D does not add a lot to this one and without the 3D this is simply navigating a maze that is fairly linear in design. If you own the SegaScope 3-D glasses you might consider this game only because there are so few 3D games.
Overall, this game sucks. I simply can't put it in the middle the more I think about it because there just isn't enough here to go on. It's a basic maze game with little variety. It's clear they wanted to do only one thing, use an awesome peripheral as a gimmick instead of working with it and creating a finely integrated title that could go down as a memorable release from the 8-Bit era. Maze Hunter 3-D, like most of these games for the SMS, is just a game with three dimensions attached to it. It could have played without it, and that's how you know it fails.
