All in all, Phantasy Star is mind blowing for its time. It is by far the most robust and impressive RPG ever to grace the Master System and rivals most 16-bit games in complexity. If you have the means, and you don't mind the grainy look and the character building, it is definitely a game worth playing.
Game Freaks 365 (Jul 04, 2010)
A number of gamers out there aren't really fans of RPGs, but Phantasy Star is a game that can even bring the staunchest anti-RPG gamer to try it out. It's intuitive, deep, beautiful, it just has everything you'd expect out of a good game RPG or otherwise. It's often considered to be the greatest game for the system, and though some people may argue against it, there's just too much going for it in its favor to deny it. The graphics are incredible, the sound has been bludgeoned until there is nothing better to be done with it, the gameplay is intense and deep, it's creative as all hell, and it will keep you coming back for ages. It's just a great game, plain and simple, and easily the best title the Master System ever had to offer. Every gamer out there needs to say they've at least played this game.

The game typically take 40 hours to complete although the musical score will stay with you for much longer. Innovative and elegant in its own unique way, Phantasy Star offers an enticing combination of simple gameplay and engaging storytelling.

If you want to play the definitive traditional RPG, then look no further than Phantasy Star. It may be long and tedious by today's standards, but it was state-of-the-art in 1988. It has great graphics, pseudo-3D dungeons, a decent storyline, and endless turn-based battles on three worlds. Phantasy Star is at the cornerstone of my Sega Fan's foundation.

IGN (Sep 01, 2009)
The core of Phantasy Star is a pretty standard 8-bit RPG, and it's understandable that many players wouldn't want to spend five bucks on an experience that will have them grinding levels, buying health potions and running into random battles after every few steps on the overworld map -- longtime fans of the genre will have done all that many, many times before. But Phantasy Star is nonetheless fully worth its asking price of 500 Wii Points for the fact that, without this game, many players wouldn't be fans of the genre. It was such a definitive release and so pivotal for an entire generation in the late '80s that it can't be denied its classic status, and must be recommended to experience again here on Wii.
Defunct Games (May 12, 2007)
Overall this game is a must have for all Master System fanboys and girls. Its innovative concepts are a true foundation to the standard role-playing game setting of today's overblown epics. In any case of the matter, I would love to pop in this game re-experience the joys of 8-bit glory heaven. Nuts included!
Megablast (1992)
In diesem Sinne... viel Vergnügen!

On the whole, Phantasy Star offers pretty much everything a role-playing enthusiast could ask from a Sega. It has puzzles, battles, lots of interaction and a fair bit of depth. My only reservation about recommending it is its monumental price tag – forty quid seems a lot to pay even if you do get a big game and a battery-backed memory system. Real RPG fans should definitely check Phantasy Star out, but anyone with just a passing interest in this type of game might not feel they're getting their money's worth.
Realm of Gaming (Dec 30, 2013)
Phantasy Star is almost mediocre by today's standards. I say "almost," because the game finds true redemption in one of the genre's sadly lost concepts: it eschews a "deep," silly narrative and leaves you to your devices. Ultimately, you are the one who decides where to go and what to do next. Neither are you beaten over the head by the suggestions of NPCs (who mostly leave vague hints regarding certain locations and items), nor are you forced into motion by dialog-heavy cutscenes. Phantasy Star is a great rustic experience for people who aren't big on modern RPGs. Those of us who enjoy dipping into both retro and contemporary pools, though, might find that the campaign isn't what it used to be.
