The gameplay is rock solid and the control is dead-on. The vertical scrolling is a bit choppy, but otherwise the action is smooth and fun. The difficulty is fair, and it ramps gradually.

Shinobi was one of the early greats for the Master System. I've recently been reviewing what most fans consider to be the SMS "Top Ten" for this website and this is almost always in everyone's list. It's an excellent game and deserves all the attention it gets. It is without a doubt the best conversion of the arcade classic you'll ever set your eyes on, so much better than the awful NES version by Tengen. Great job Sega, too bad you didn't make more like this.

If you've played the arcade original, then you'll be pleased with the Master System port. Everything is in tact from missions to music, and graphics to gameplay. Shinobi provides hours of ninja fun from the master programmers at Sega.

Flickering sprites are made up for by fast action, neat animation, loads of colour, good sound and plenty to do - Shinobi is almost worth buying a Sega console for.

Shinobi doesn’t raise any standards as far as game play goes for the SMS, but it’s just a fun and very challenging game that?s worth the time it takes to master. Pick it up because it’s only going to cost you a few bucks, and where else are you going to find a samurai boss named Lobster in a game?

All in all, Shinobi is a classic platformer and one of the best games in the library of Master System games. Shurikhay!

Overall, Shinobi for the SMS is still fun to play, as it is a good port of a great arcade game, but there are extremely frustrating parts culminating in a unrewarding finish. This adventure of Sega’s favorite ninja sounds bad, plays hard, and looks good.

Overall, Shinobi is a mixed bag, featuring excellent level design, decent graphics, smooth controls, and a good soundtrack. Sadly, the extreme difficulty, cheap AI, and awkward hit detection zap a lot of fun out of it. After a few hours of play, Shinobi can be fun. I’m just not certain this game is worthy of the praise it receives.
