Pretty decent compilation...but we want MORE!

The Good
This is a great compilation of some classic Genesis games. Phantasy Star 2 alone makes this CD worth it, and the other games are great as well. If you're into compilations of classic games, this is one of the best. Each game is emulated almost perfectly, so they're virtually the same as they were on the Genesis. Although Altered Beast and Outrun were already released for the PC years ago, these Genesis versions look and sound much better, as well as being easier to run under Windows. I can only hope that Sega will release some more Smash Packs with the rest of the Phantasy Stars and maybe some Master System games.

The Bad
Being perfectly emulated games can also be a bad thing. Although Smash Pack is supposed to be a discounted re-release of some classics, it would have been nice if they had opted to rework each of these games with better graphics and sound.

Even though Smash Pack's versions of Outrun and Altered Beast are superior to the DOS originals, its version of Golden Axe is not. Sega already had a great port of Golden Axe for the PC, which looks and sounds better than the Genesis version included on the Smash Pack. It would seem to make more sense to include a superior version that is native to the machine it will run on, than to emulate an inferior version and include it on the compilation.

The Bottom Line
This is a nice little compilation of some classic games by one of the best game developing companies in the world - Sega. All these game are the Genesis versions with no upgrades, but it sure is nice to play these games on your PC instead of seeking out a Genesis and each cartridge.

What a smashing compilation!

The Good
Sega Smash Pack, packs 8 classic Sega Genesis games. It retailed at budget game price. I bought this collection mainly for Phantasy Star II. But you that all the games packed hours upon hours of entertainment. Sega Smash Pack is a cheap and legal alternative to emulation

Altered Beast, Super Shinobi, Columns, Vectorman, Outrun, Golden Axe, Sonic Spinball, and Phantasy Star II, all on one disc for 20 bucks! All the games play great as good as the originals but with better resolution due to the PC’s monitor. These games were all great when they were new a still pack loads of fun. Phantasy Star II alone packs about 40 hours of gameplay.

The Graphics are still good. This is probably because they were ahead of there time, so do not look that bad even by today’s standards. Some games look better than others. Shinobi looks better than Altered Beast for example.

All the music and sounds are intact and still sound good. Particularly Yuzo Koshiro’s Shinobi score. And Bo’s Phantasy Star II score.

All the classic games are here and play as well as they did a decade ago.

The Bad
The bad. On some systems the sound screws up. And there could have been more games.

The Bottom Line
Overall I would recommend this one to fans of older games. If you loved these games 10 years ago you still will.

Trivia

Think all the games in Smash Pack were reprogrammed for the PC? Have you wondered why they look so much like the original Genesis games? That's because they are the original Genesis games! What you are using to play the games is actually a modified version of the popular Genesis emulator, KGen98, modified by Steve Snake. Steve Snake wrote KGen98 and was also once a big Genesis programmer, having worked on several projects. One of those was NBA Jam Tournament Edition for the Genesis.
