That having been said, the gameplay experience from the arcade has been preserved extremely well. Since you're fighting zombies and other undead creatures, they usually take more than one shot to put down (and even then, head shots are preferred). Forget pinpoint accurate shooting, just blast everything over and over until it stops moving. It's a pretty intense experience. Every once in a while, the game will finish loading a level or section off the CD and immediately throw something at you, which isn't exactly fair, but the gameplay is otherwise a good match for the arcade.

Even though I had problems hitting targets on the side of the screen (I wish Namco would make a Saturn Gun-Con), The House of the Dead kept me happily shooting for a long, long time. I enjoyed the creepy techno-goth music and the customizable-on-the-fly gameplay - depending on what and where you shoot, there are a bunch of different branching paths to take through the carnage.

In the arcade or in the home, Sega's House of the Dead is basically a marriage of Capcom's zombie thriller Resident Evil to the popular Virtua Cop gun game series.

Considering this game came out late in the system's lifecycle, you'd think they could have done a better job. The Saturn light gun, on the other hand, is responsive and exceedingly accurate. In fact, even without calibration, these guns are superior to the ones I have for my Xbox. Despite its flaws, I enjoy playing House of the Dead, especially since the changing paths make each play slightly different. And any game where you shoot killer monkeys can't be all bad.

While it is always nice to see a new game with my zombie friends in it (even if they are portrayed as stereotypical flesh-eating monsters), it is a shame that it has to be such a mediocre game as this one. House of the Dead is just a quick, sloppy port from the arcade. Sega obviously didn't spend much time on this one and it shows. While the gameplay is still pretty good in most parts, the lousy graphics and minor gameplay glitches drag this one down.
