From the gorgeous, seven-minute movie-quality intro (which nearly overshadows the game itself), to the lush audio track, to the 360-degree action provided by a rotating point of view, Dragoon immerses you in a lyrical and exhilarating epic. The triumph of Dragoon is that you begin to think of it as a story, not just a game. If the Saturn can deliver more such experiences, then the videogame industry will have truly undergone a transformation.

Only a few games reach such lofty heights. This one is remarkable in most every way, and brilliantly executed.

Take a look at Panzer Dragoon - and remember that it always takes developers some time to figure out how to program for new game systems. Hopefully, this game's a killer sign of what's to come from the Saturn. It looks great, sounds great and plays like a dragon's dream.

Once again Sega has taken a proven concept and built it into something that's head and shoulders over anything else out there. With Panzer, you get an overwhelmingly convincing 3-D virtual environment, gnarly SFX and orchestral music from heaven above. The only thing even remotely bothersome in PD is the "man this is hard" difficulty setting. With games as high quality as PD right out of the gate, the Saturn may be the ticket towards a new renaissance for Sega.

Do you enjoy similar games like After Burner III, Rainbow Cotton and Star Fox? If yes, then definitely give Panzer Dragoon a shot!

IGN
The Panzer Dragoon series remains a favorite amongst SEGA fans and many hardcore gamers. While later entries would outstrip the original in both gameplay and graphics, there is something special about this springboard. The soundtrack, the art direction, and fluid (but simple) gameplay came together in a near-perfect package. The fact that Panzer Dragoon holds up as well in 2008 as it did in 1995 is just testament to the staying power of good art and tight gameplay. If you missed Panzer Dragoon for any reason when it originally debuted or are only familiar with its sequels, such as Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox, it's well worth exhuming this game.

All in all, Panzer Dragoon is a hit and yet another reason to get a Sega Saturn.

If you're into 3D shooters with a real soul, Panzer Dragoon surely won't disappoint. The original Panzer Dragoon is a fantasy treat that's worth purchasing.

At its core, PD is a simple shooter that plays very much like StarFox. You’re riding on top of a dragon whose flight path is pre-determined. You can turn 360 degrees to fire all around you, but you can’t actually turn the dragon around. The effects are outstanding, with several show-stoppers on each level. Gigantic enemies float effortlessly across your screen without slowdown or flicker, and a dramatic soundtrack enhances the surreal atmosphere. Some gamers may complain that PD lacks power-ups and energy restores, but as I said in my Tempest 2000 review several issues ago, it’s the simple shooters that keep you coming back. If you can’t finish the level, it’s not because you missed something. You just aren’t good enough yet.

At it's core Panzer Dragoon is nothing more than Afterburner with a Dragon motif. Now don't get me wrong, Sega's flag ship Saturn launch game may not have all the interaction that other games offer, but what it lacks in depth it more than makes up for with a fully realized world.

From the adrenaline-charged sandworm chase in the desert to the amazing dragon vs. dragon dogfights, Panzer Dragoon constantly proves that there's still life left in the shooter genre. Add the innovative 360 degree viewpoints and you're totally immersed in a world unlike anything you've ever experienced. If this is any indication of what Saturn players have to look forward to, then Sega is definitely on the right track.

Sega's next generation machine is here and shooting games will never be the same! If you haven't gotten your mitts on this game yet, get it now! The graphics, especially the backgrounds, are beautiful to behold and the music is awesome! The weapons are great, but the game could have used a little more. But if I had to say one gripe about the game, it would be that you fly in a predetermined path, but that can be easily overlooked considering the quality of the game.

The Video Game Critic
Unfortunately, the Saturn's graphics capabilities can just barely handle this game's visual demands. There's major pixelation and it's hard to make out certain enemies, especially in front of equally pixilated scenery. Another problem is the lack of a level select, meaning you'll have to replay the early levels each tie you play. Be sure to check out the introduction - it's one of the best I've seen in a Saturn title. Panzer Dragoon is a landmark shooter, and every Saturn owner should have this game in their library.

But despite minor gameplay issues, this game stands out as a must- have simply because Team Andromeda created such an engrossing world. They even created a new language for the game to make it more realistic! The language, which fans refer to as Panzerese, is rumored to be an amalgamation of Latin, German, Japanese, and other modern languages.
