Few video game series hold the distinct title of "genre redefining." In 1988, a group of young Sega developers unleashed Phantasy Star on a world of unsuspecting RPG players. Nearly 15 years later, a new generation of gamers can enjoy the origins of this classic series with Phantasy Star Collection for the Game Boy Advance.

As the name implies, Phantasy Star Collection bundles Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star III in a single cartridge. This RPG series revolutionized the genre with immersive 3D dungeons, massive environments and hours of non-linear exploration.

    Phantasy Star

Originating on the 8-bit Sega Master System, Phantasy Star blends sci-fi storytelling with fantasy creatures. Players follow the exploits of Alis Landale on her quest to avenge the death of her brother.

Joined by powerful companions, Alis's travels take her across three planets of the Algo solar system. Gameplay consists mostly of traditional overworld exploration and turn-based combat sequences. You can also speak with various townspeople and explore dungeons from a first-person perspective.

    Phantasy Star II

Released in 1989 on the Sega Genesis, Phantasy Star II weaves an entirely new tale of intrigue featuring a diverse set of characters and locales. Set in the same universe as the first title, Phantasy Star II tells the story of Rolf, a young government agent.

The planet Mota is governed by the Mother Brain computer. Things quickly go awry as the world's climate and machinery begin behaving erratically. As Rolf, you must investigate these malfunctions, and hopefully save the world.

You're joined by a rogue's gallery of colorful allies to aid you on your quest. You'll travel to distant planets, battle fierce creatures and even become an outlaw on your journey of discovery.

Compared to the original Phantasy Star, part II features enhanced graphics with larger characters, more on-screen colors and brilliant spell effects. Arguably the best game in the series, Phantasy Star II alone is worth the price of admission.

    Phantasy Star III

In 1991, Sega released Phantasy Star III on the Sega Genesis to millions of eager fans worldwide. Darkness rules the land and you must control three generations of heroes to free the world from tyranny.

Much controversy surrounds the release of Phantasy Star III. Fans of the first two were initially dismayed by the radical departure of visual and storytelling style.

The artwork abandons the cartoon-look of the originals in lieu of more realistically proportioned characters. Phantasy Star III also introduces a "generational" system of character control.

At the end of your initial quest, you choose a bride and have a child, who becomes the next character you control. That child differs depending on which bride you choose, offering a unique spin on the role-playing aspect of RPGs.

    Relive the Magic

You'll be hard pressed to find a better collection of RPGs. Even given the wide selection of RPGs on the Game Boy Advance, Phantasy Star Collection deserves a spot in your gaming schedule.
