Shining the Holy Ark is the newest addition to Sega's insanely popular Shining series, and the first game in the series available for the Saturn. It's also the first game in the series that can be defined as a pure RPG (Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, and Shining Force II were RPG-strategy hybrids). This switch to a new format hasn't hurt the title, and Shining the Holy Ark shows itself to be a strong, if not particularly novel, RPG release (which is something of a novelty in and of itself in this day and age).

Shining The Holy Ark is possibly the best first-person dungeon RPG yet released in the US. Although I'm personally not a big fan of the game's layout, I still really enjoyed playing through it. I heartily recommend this one to all interested parties.

Shining the Holy Ark may not seem like much compare to today's rpgs but it can still give you a good time. It's definetly a game that can be called underrated. It's a shame that not too many rpgers today will know anything about it.

Overall saying, I still think this game is average at best, but for those seeking a classic RPG with ties to Shining Force 3, Shining the Holy Ark is as good as it gets. Well, it's a rather old game but I guess part of the thrill comes in searching for it...

Game Revolution
The best part of Shining the Holy Ark is that it is fun, and a welcome treat for RPG-starved Saturn owners. The innovations in the user-friendly interface should immediately be adopted by all future RPG's as they make the game much less tedious. The first person perspective is also a nice change, and younger kids will find the cartoony graphics entertaining. However, a few good enhancements just aren't always good enough when you don't care about the story. The motor works fine, but the Holy Ark could still use a little more buffing and polishing.

Although the most popular instalments of Sega's Shining series were always Shining Force I and II on the Mega Drive, there seems to be an eagerness to take the property in an altogether different direction with its Saturn incarnations. Not always, it would seem, a wise move. Shining Wisdom was a rather lacklustre Zelda clone and now Shining the Holy Ark seems to be nothing more than an update of the very first game in the series, Shining in the Darkness - itself a clone of that venerable classic, Dungeon Master.
