Sega Touring Car Championship

Lo único que logra salvar a Sega Touring Car es su apartado multijugador, que incluye tanto opciones de división de pantalla como de red e Internet. Por lo demás, el juego deja poco sitio para el concepto de diversión, ya que en su afán por ser tan real como la vida misma, Sega ha creado un título que más que un juego de carreras parece trigonometría sobre ruedas.

If you don't have a 3D Pad, then don't bother with Sega Touring Car. Without analog support you have little chance of appreciating this game. It moves fast, but at a low frame rate. Once you get used to the control and tweak your car(s), the challenge to compete will keep you interested...

Sega steckt in einer Zwickmühle: Arcade-Rennspiele 1:1 auf den PC zu übertragen – das klappt nicht. PC-Besitzer sind verwöhnt von einem dicken Strecken-Paket, Tuning-Optionen und vielfältigen Spielmodi. Wird der Spielhallen-Flitzer diesen Gegebenheiten angepaßt, hat er mit dem Vorbild nicht mehr viel zu tun. Was tun? Bei Sega Touring Car Championship ist der Versuch, die goldene Mitte zu finden, ordentlich gelungen. Das Fahrgefühl unterscheidet sich zwar vom Arcade-Vorbild, doch dank des brillanten Sounds, der Setups und der harten Gegner macht es durchaus Spaß. Der Mehrspieler-Modus verstärkt das Spielhallen-Feeling, doch die magere Streckenauswahl ist ein herber Dämpfer. Wer aber schon etliche Markstücke in der Spielhalle investiert hat, wird auch mit der PC-Umsetzung zufrieden sein.

Sofern das Warten auf den angekündigten 3D-Patch als zumutbar empfunden wird, kann man mit Segas neuem Rennspiel noch zufrieden sein. Echte Killer-Features, die es aus der Masse an PS-Software herausheben könnte, habe ich aber nicht entdeckt.

Daß es durchaus Spaß machen kann, mit Tourenwagen über enge Kurse zu brettern, hat Codemasters unlängst mit TOCA bewiesen. Die Rallyerfahrenen Japaner beackern dieselbe Baustelle – nur viel sparsamer. Läppische vier Autos dürfen Sie bei der Arcade-Konvertierung über drei unspektakuläre Kurse prügeln. Sehr dürftig, auch wenn Fahrgefühl und Steuerung stimmen, und Tuningoptionen sowie Force Feedback-Support zum Programmpaket gehören. Die Optik ist trotz 16-Bit-Farben extrem pixelig ausgefallen und der 3D-Beschleunigerpatch soll erst später nachgeliefert werden. Sorry Sega, aber das ist im Jahre des Herrn 1998 einfach zu wenig.

In all, Sega Touring Car Championship is more difficult than it's worth. There are no real-life tracks from out of NASCAR or the Formula 1 circuit, and Mario Andretti never makes an appearance. Graphically it suffers less than a lot of the competition - hats off to the developers for eliminating the number one enemy of any game based on pure speed: graphical slowdown. However, control issues plague the game, and with only three tracks, even a perfect racer would only be fun for so long.

We'll skip the bull and get right to the point. I could not stand this game. It is perhaps the worst racer that I have ever played, and I am left wondering how this ever passed the beta testing stage. While you do get a nice big juicy rebate ($20) when you purchase it, bringing the price to around $29, you might as well save your dough. If you want an arcade style racing game that will provide some fun, try Sega Rally Championship, it costs less money and plays a lot better.

What it all adds up to is a game that's not only unattractive, but also extremely un-fun. The promised 3D support might make things look a little better, but it won't do anything to make this game any more thrilling or engaging. If you're looking for down-and-dirty racing action for your PC, there is a slew of better choices available.

Fünf langweilige, sehr kurze Strecken und eine Präsentation von Annodunnemals ergeben zusammen mit der mißlungenen Steuerung ein Rennspiel hart an der Grenze zum Totalschaden. Dazu kommt, daß ich im Championship-Modus nicht weiß, wie es gerade um den Gesamtsieg steht. So habe ich gleich mehrmals den Meistertitel um ein paar läppische Zehntelsekunden verpaßt, weil ich die letzte Kurve mit zuviel Risiko nahm und noch einen unnötigen Crash hinlegte. Außer dem insgesamt ordentlichen Sound ist Touring Car Championship also eine herbe Enttäuschung, zumal die Japaner bereits bewiesen haben, daß sie mehr von Rennspielen verstehen.

I don't even know what a "touring car" is, but apparently they are forced to race on the most boring tracks on earth. There's really nothing to see outside of the wall-lined courses, and the high speeds make it hard to anticipate upcoming turns. But the worst part of Sega Touring Car, by far, is when you ACCIDENTALLY pull into that God-forsaken pit stop area. Like most racers, the pit stop is just a waste of time and if you use it, you're guaranteed to lose. I suppose the same could be said about playing this game.
