There are also many side-quests to keep you busy, even after the main storyline is done. Not to mention the fact that the game’s fun factor seems to make it seem more at home in the golden age of 2D platformers, as opposed to the 2000’s. There’s only one thing that disappoints me about Shantae, and that would be the fact that the planned GBA sequel never saw the light of day.
While time can often be overly generous to the reputation of cult classics, some may find that the actual product doesn't live up to the hype. Indeed, there will be those who give in to the worshipping of Shantae only to find a game that isn't for them. Modern gamers beware: Shantae is something of an acquired taste. This is a game best enjoyed by those who are truly retro gamers; and no, not the guy who likes Tetris DS and downloaded Super Mario Bros. 3 from the Virtual Console but only played the first few levels. We're talking about people who are familiar with Mr. Gimmick! and can't wait for the next episode of Little Miss Gamer. Shantae does proper justice to the golden era of gaming. For those of us enrolled in the old-school, there's no higher compliment that can be paid to a modern game.

Seriously, the game is a wonderful platform adventure with excellent puzzle elements, as well as having tons of variety in its level and character design. Shantae looks fantastic as a Game Boy Color game, and pretty darn good on the Game Boy Advance, comparatively speaking, of course. Shantae is in seriously limited release because of the game's lack of familiar branding and lowered demand for GBC product, so get out there and pick this girl up.
Few games for Game Boy Color exploit the system to its limits with such unabashed good gameplay. What a shame the title has been released during the final throes of the GBC development cycle. Shantae certainly ranks with the best the system has to offer and challenges the Legend of Zelda titles for sheer enjoyment and design.
Der Hype um „Shantae“ mag einzig durch die geringe Auflage der Erstveröffentlichung angefacht worden sein, das Spiel ist aber in der Tat ziemlich spaßig. Einige Mängel wie der starke Schwierigkeitsanstieg mögen für heutige Hüpfspiele eher ungewohnt sein, durch die Speicherfunktion der eShop-Version wird aber vieles wieder vereinfacht. Wer auf knifflige Jump‘n‘Runs und Plattformer der Game Boy-Zeit steht, wird mit „Shantae“ einige spannende Stunden für 4,99 Euro verbringen.
Des graphismes enchanteurs, une durée de vie consistante et des musiques allant parfaitement de pair avec l'ensemble. A priori, Shantae possédait tous les atouts en main pour devenir un incontournable de la Gameboy Color. C'était sans compter sur d'irrémédiables défauts qui auront la fâcheuse tendance de mettre à mal le rythme de l'aventure. Bien heureusement, ces quelques lacunes de gameplay se dissiperont rapidement une fois que les pas de danse rythmés et sensuels de l'héroïne entreront en scène. Au final, c'est à un coup de natte toujours aussi ravageur auquel les joueurs ont de nouveau accès sur 3DS.
I'd say go ahead and buy Shantae, its only a GBC game so its not too expensive, and you'll enjoy it on all those long flights and lonely nights. You'll get more dancing action than you can shake a stick at. Which reminds me, I never did beat the highest class in the dance parlor.
Ultimately, Shantae is a fine example of how good a 2D platform game can be on a portable system. While it would have been nice to see the game developed specifically for the Game Boy Advance, it does what it does well, even on the Game Boy Color. So if you're looking for an excuse to dust off your Game Boy Color, or you have a taste for 2D action, you need look no further than Shantae.
While Shantae is definitely beautiful, quirky, and fun, there are a few gameplay elements that can make it a real chore just to stick with it.
