If you like to think... or if you like strategy... or if you like RPGs, then definitely give this game a go. Shining Force is a benchmark for 16-bit Strategy/RPGs. Finding it can be difficult these days but the experience is well worth the search and price...

How long has it been since you've visited Max and the Shining Force? If you haven't played the game in quite some time, I strongly advise you to download the game and revisit one of the paragons of the strategy RPG genre. If you've never played the game before, I envy you. You're about to experience Shining Force for the first time, and that is something I wish all of us could feel again. This game is the best 800 points you're ever going to spend.

I haven't been so glued to a game since the time when I first bought my Megadrive almost four years ago! Everything that I look for in a game - stylish graphics, great music, atmosphere and irresistible playability are all present here. The situation is made all the more outstanding for me because Shining Force is an RPG and I usually shy away from such games as they are often too long-winded and very tedious to watch. What makes the game so extra special is that there is a real sense of control over the combat sections. Consequently I find myself wincing at every blow that my comrades take and cheering heartily at every fallen foe. It sounds crazy but then play the game for yourself and see if you don't do the same! Though the graphics appear quite basic at first they certainly improve as the Shining Force progress and earn themselves promotions. Every member of the team is a true individual and have their own trademark methods of attack.

Shining Force won't dethrone the current king of Genesis RPGs, Phantasy Star II, but it's packed with enough quests and characters to satisfy your role-playing appetite.

In conclusion, Legacy of Great Intention is absolutely wonderful. It's got great graphics, amazing gameplay, good music and sound, simple (if slightly tedious) control, and a great plot that's easily enhanced with speculation. The fun factor alone should be reason enough to buy the game and if it wasn't for the slight annoyances like the talk control, this would be a must for any RPG fan.

Shining Force is a top-notch game and a true strategy RPG. It gives you the strategy engine but doesn't forget to include the heart and soul of the RPG, which is story, exploration and non-player character interaction. Many that have come after have tried to capture the feeling that this game has, but most have failed. They may capture the fun battles, or the great story and graphics, but none have combined them as well as Shining Force did.

Shining Force is a great, classic Genesis title that fits perfectly into the lineup of available Virtual Console selections, especially since there are, so far, no other strategy RPGs to compete against it. It's well worth its 800 Wii Point asking price, and should most readily appeal to old-school Genesis owners, fans of Camelot's subsequent work on Nintendo systems, and strategy gamers in general.

There’s plenty of entertainment to be had with loads of missions (many of which can last for well over an hour) and some mildly diverting 'town' sections, which fall into the traditional RPG format of locating an item/person in order to further the story. All in all, the game is an excellent addition to the Virtual Console library and represents a meatier, more involving purchase than most other games available on the service. If you want a game that you can really sink your teeth into then make sure you download this.

So overall, it’s a pretty grindy game sometimes, but still I found it an enjoyable way of spending downtime after work. It has its cartoony charm, and enough tactical challenge posed to be satisfying, but not super-complex. So if you’re retro enough to go back to the 16-bit days, there’s hours of fantasy fun here for less than the cost of a pint of beer.

Turn-based strategy games on consoles are old hat by now, but Shining Force on the Sega Genesis was one of the very first (and very few) games of this genre to inch its way out of the formative primordial ooze of the early 1990s. While rather primitive by today's standards, the original featured a huge cast of playable characters and what was then a new brand of tactical gameplay. Now released for the Wii Virtual Console, Shining Force shows its age in presentation and doesn't have much of the crazy complexity console strategies are so fond of these days. But with a roster of 30 recruitable characters and a lengthy adventure that easily lasts 25 hours or more, this retro role-playing game is well worth the 800 Wii points ($8).

Some games just do not age well, and Shining Force is one of those games. In essence, Sega had three options: to port a nearly 20-year old game to the console, to port an improved re-made version (2004's Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon), or to develop a new remake of the game that takes advantage of the iOS platform. Unfortunately, the first option, being the easiest, is the one that Sega went with, and the end result is a disappointing, lazy port that is tough to control and lacks compared with today's SRPG offerings. It doesn't have the difficulty of a Fire Emblem, the story of a Final Fantasy Tactics, the over-the-top craziness of a Disgaea, or the complexity and verve of an Ogre game. Today, Shining Force is a game without differentiators, when released today it flounders in the middle of the pack of SRPGs. And without a remake, reboot, or at least a better control scheme, there are plenty of better, more fun options for games on the iOS device.

So once things do get underway it's actually a nice surprise to find that, rather than the expected trawl through sprawling overworlds and chest-filled dungeons, what you've actually got is a tactical turn-based strategy RPG, very much in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics. It's not quite that good, obviously, as the menu system is a little clunky and the free-roaming sections can be a chore, but amid the ocean of shoot-em-ups and platformers sloshing around the VC, anything with that little extra depth and scale is a welcome change of pace.

Victory depends largely on your ability to effectively coordinate the movement and attacks of your units. Your units can accumulate experience points and gain levels, as well as earn "promotions" to improve their classes. When a unit dies in battle, you can't bring them back during the fight, but you can have it revived at a church. If the Hero is killed, the battle ends and you find yourself back at your last save point - with half the gold. The background music and sound effects are pretty enjoyable and the graphics (which included some simple illustrations of the characters) are relatively good-looking all things considered. A few of its elements are a little inconvenient, but on the whole Shining Force is pretty darn fun to play. Favorite Character: Zylo.

The combination of a few good fights and the strategy required to maximize a party's performance does make Shining Force a fairly entertaining game, but one that didn't appeal to me the way Fire Emblem and Front Mission, among others, did. While a solid early entrant into the diverse and long-lasting Shining collection of games, it just doesn't stand out in comparison to other retro turn-based strategy role-playing games. I had fun playing it, but nothing in the game struck me as memorable or particularly noteworthy.
