Worth Playing
It is, in fact, excellent — a superlative example of what can be done with atmosphere and concept. The source graphics engine it's built on is tried and true, the pace keeps the frame rates crystal clean, the artistic art-deco design is gorgeous, and there is a pervasive sense of subtle gallows-humor throughout all levels that kept me smiling, even while playing offline. While I did only manage once to pop into a server with several actual people playing, let me tell you that it's quite entertaining when everything clicks. What it all comes down to is this: without people playing it, the game isn't much fun. As a result, the few people who actually try it won't have fun, will stop playing it, and make it even less entertaining. If my words carry any weight whatsoever, then please take my advice and give The Ship a try. The more of you who do, the more fun we'll all have, and the better a chance there is that the developers will continue to make games like this that break new ground.

Essentially a murder mystery, The Ship combines elements of the whodunnit classic board game Clue with shooter elements, in addition to some personal management features not unlike The Sims. There's lots of action, tasks, strategy, and laughs to be had. You can play with others online or offline with bots. Each mode has its own good and bad points, but the good points outweigh bad. If you're looking for a refreshing change of gameplay, then I think your ship may have just come in.

GameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands)

Just Adventure
There aren’t too many ideas that have emerged as an independent game from an unofficial mod. Even less are the games that actually offer something new. Well, The Ship is both and it is one hell of a game. Once a Half-Life mod, now an amazing original independent game, The Ship is probably the first multiplayer game with elimination and hunt your foe gameplay that will appeal to adventure gamers.

This wildly different take on Quake, The Sims, and Clue is off the wall and innovative.

Overall, The Ship is a good game at a great price. It seems to be developing a decent-sized fan base, and I rarely have trouble finding a server. For 20 dollars, you really can't go wrong, since this is one game that you can play for a few rounds or all night. I recommend The Ship to anyone who enjoys slower, more deliberately paced games of strategy and planning. I feel like this game can only get better with time.

PC Action
Mein Mehrspieler-Geheimtipp heißt ab sofort The Ship. Spielen Sie The Ship nur online! Die Bots im Einzelspieler-Modus taugen nichts.

In short: if you're looking for something new to pass some time with, you like innovation and love playing online? Don't hesitate any longer and get The Ship. The little downpoints, like some bugs and a lack of human opponents, don't outway the legendary gaming moments you'll experience with this title. Also, the game only costs €20 and creativity earns to be rewarded. No money? You can always help a hand at the docks ;)

Yet Another Review Site (YARS)
Being based on Valves Source engine, the graphics are pretty good, even for a game nearly 2 years old. The ship and characters are all rendered well, with real sense of personality and atmosphere. Sonically The Ship is no slouch either. With 1920s tunes playing the background and the sounds of people going about their business, you really get drawn in to it all! As a single player game, there is not a huge amount for you. But take this online and you are in for some of the most entertaining and original game play you are likely to find anywhere. Add to this it's budget price and The Ship is a real winner!

Overall, I have to say I enjoyed single-player more than the multiplayer portion of The Ship, even though the former was rather short. If the right enhancements are put into place I can definitely see room for additional missions and would actually like to play more of them on different ships. The multiplayer seems innovative but it just doesn’t stick for one reason or another.

Despite the Ship's diverse elements, they're fitted together fairly well. It's an intense experience to see someone walk by who may or may not be trying to knife your stomach. It definitely has a few faults, though. The combat is decidedly awkward, the bot A.I. is horrific, and there's a significant amount of waiting around with nothing to do. The action is interesting enough to keep players coming back, however. For those thinking of making the 20 dollar purchase, be aware that it rewards patience and commitment much more than twitch skills. It forces you to pay attention to your character's needs, lest they die or commit suicide, which some may have a distaste for. I liked it though, and found The Ship to be a refreshing diversion from the doldrums of convention.

Finally, here’s a fresh first-person shooter that doesn’t rely on twitchy trigger fingers or overdramatic stealth sequences. The Ship trades in quick reflexes and steady aim for an emphasis on sly cunning and novel intrigue. Originally developed as a Half-Life mod, this UK-produced multiplayer game has been remade on the Source engine and released at retail and over Steam as another indie-dev-goes-commercial success story.

There isn't much depth to it all: catch someone going to the restroom but kill the wrong person; get thrown in jail (for 29 seconds) for having a weapon out in an area with surveillance; you can even just kill your target ruthlessly round after round, but wouldn't you rather find an umbrella to do him in with first? But the formula itself is fun and the art and sound teams did an amazing job creating an immersive experience.

The Ship is definitely not for the hardcore FPS gamer, it takes on a more casual relaxed approach, and while fun for the odd game or so I don't think I shall be returning to it too often. It does show promise though, and if you're bored of the bog standard death-match in most FPS games then it's probably worth checking out. Just don't go expecting it to replace your hardcore FPS needs or it could end up going down like the Titanic.
