Surprise, surprise, surprise. A licensed game for a movie, aimed predominantly at kids that is actually pretty darn good and even innovative at times. I didn’t really have too high of hopes for this game, especially in light of so many bad movie to game franchises and the unmitigated disaster that was the first game, but I came away very pleasantly surprised and confident that Activision did right by the license. Shrek 2 is one of those rare games that should appeal to gamers and fans of the material, no matter their age or experience level.

It captures the spirit of Shrek and the world created for him, and seems to have enough of a challenge with learning to use four characters almost at once to provide gamers with something different and fun. And it's multiplayer, something you don't see from this kind of game very often. It's got a couple little minor issues for me, but overall I'm enjoy it. And hey, it's kid safe too. Parents can feel at ease picking this up for their kids. Good job guys, good game.

There are some things in the video game world that will never change. For most every giant movie release, there's going to be a video game based on it. And as much as you think you can stop it, you can't. In fact, some games come out before or on the same day as the movie release. But the downside with movie-to-game translations is that they generally don't work. I can only think of one or two that I actually liked; such as Enter The Matrix. But otherwise they always seem to fall short. But in comes, one company, and the only giant green orge I've ever seen with a Scottish accent to try and change that perception.

Not having yet seen the movie, and trying to stay away from any real plot spoilers, I’m not quite sure how closely the Shrek 2 game follow the events in the upcoming Shrek 2 film. That said, the game does appear to be based on events in the film, with characters ranging from Puss In Boots to The Gingerbread Man appearing to lend Shrek, Donkey and Fiona a hand.

Shrek 2 is a polished, easy to grasp, platforming game which has enough spice to keep you along for the entire trip. The movie franchise has been properly represented and is one of the best four-player, multiplayer games out for the Xbox. All Shrek fans should pick this up, and all others should at least rent it once.

I would think that Shrek 2 wouldn’t appeal to that many people but given the movie’s sales, I don’t think that’s the case. As I said for the GBA review, if you’ve been shying away from the series, it’s time to pick up a controller and play as everyone’s favorite green ogre (not that you have many choices as there aren’t that many, green ogres…).

From the start of the game, Shrek 2 surprised me. It begins with one of the most unique character setups I have ever seen. Then, only a few minutes later, I find myself bursting with laughter at the game's hilarious dialogue. If those voice-overs didn't come direct from the film, they found excellent Mike Myers, Eddie Murphey and Cameron Diaz impersonators. And to top it off, the graphics are bright, colorful, and nicely match the film's fairytale atmosphere.

Shrek 2 the movie is due to hit the theaters in a few weeks, and Activision has released several console versions to precede the movie. Previous Shrek games have been somewhat less than stellar (and that's being kind), so it was interesting to see how this latest version would fare with developer Luxoflux. I'm happy to say that this Shrek game is far, far better than all the others.

I'll admit it. Shrek 2 surprised me. I was expecting yet another derivative title of questionable quality. On the contrary, the green ogre delivers with an entirely solid gaming experience.

i’ll admit it. Shrek 2 surprised me. I was expecting yet another derivative title of questionable quality. On the contrary, the green ogre delivers with an entirely solid gaming experience. The fairly standard mission progression moves through a largely unremarkable platform landscape. Innovation lies in the use of four characters that you must control in cooperation. You’ll get to play as most of the memorable cast, and each is voiced by some of the best sound-alikes I’ve heard. The game is marred by a sadly inadequate camera system and occasionally frustrating objective-finding. I also would have loved to see a little more of the adult innuendo and cleverness that made the film such a universal favorite. As it is, the jokes cater mostly to the kids, and that’s exactly who should enjoy this fairy tale jaunt the most.

Another Shrek game -- the mere idea of it may already be sending shivers down your spine. It's actually amazing that someone is willing to make a Shrek game after the catastrophe that was Shrek Extra Large (specifically the GameCube port). However, Activision, with the help of the True Crime: Streets of L.A. team (Luxoflux), has decided to take on this rather large and green challenge. Has Shrek regained his video game honor? Read on.

Shrek 2 is a solid game that leans towards the easy side. The only real flaws are an iffy camera and iffier reading of its potential audience. It's still the best interactive thing to happen to the Shrek universe thus far. Hardcore fans, as well as those who want to share game time with younger players, will find a wee bout of challenge and some visually faithful fun here. That'll do, Donkey... that'll do.

Overall this game is actually well done and can be considered pretty fun, aside from the repetition, especially if you can find friends to play with, but it is also not aimed at the older audiences. The game is deemed fit for teens or younger. If you like the movie you may also like the game, but as for me I will probably go find a more mature game to play. For you parents out their looking for a game to get your young kid, this can be a great family game, but don’t take my word for it. Try it out for yourself and decide.

The video game tie-in has basically become a standard part of your average summer family movie package, alongside the plush toys and the backpacks and all the other marketing flotsam. So, it's no surprise that Activision has released a Shrek 2 video game just weeks before the film opens. What is surprising, considering the bottom-of-the-barrel level of quality you usually get from kid-friendly licensed games, is that it's actually pretty good. Hot off of True Crime: Streets of LA, Shrek 2 seems like an extreme shifting of gears for developer Luxoflux, but to its credit, the game comes together fairly well. However, the older kids who found some chuckles in the adult-aimed nudge-and-winks found in the original Shrek movie probably aren't going to find anything too compelling here.

Shrek 2 isn't a Super Mario Sunshine platformer. It is meant to be played with friends, and preferably, fans of the series. The gameplay is cliched, but the laughter that you might endure, depending on your personality type, will keep you interested in the game until you beat it in the seven to ten hours that it will take you. I beat it in one night, with a friend, and I have no regrets. Shrek 2 isn't a priority, but definitely look into giving this a rental.

Graphically, Shrek 2 is easy on the eyes, and animations are especially good. The collecting is a pain, the CPU-controlled characters' path-finding AI is primitive, and the camera has a habit of zooming too far back, but the biggest problem is that it's just very simple and easy - probably a side effect of being made for a broad audience.

So, is Shrek 2 worth it? This depends on the audience. The targeted younger crowd will probably eat it up, although there are a few spots where they may need help. A seasoned gamer should be able to get through this in 10-12 hours, including the bonus levels, meaning this is perhaps a weekend rental for the curious. However, someone that's just a fan of the movies will probably enjoy it, so long as familiarity with console platform games is already present. It's very derivative, and beyond a few puzzles requiring you to use all four characters in tandem, there's not a lot that's new here. At the same time, it's mostly enjoyable while it lasts, and that's more than can be said for most movie-based games.

Summer is upon us and that means a slew of "summer movies" where the action is hot and the plotline is predictably thin. Recently, it's also meant more tie-ins than ever, from the predictable fast food trinkets and backpacks to the newer addition of video games. With the recent mediocre entries (Enter the Matrix, The Hulk, the first slew of Shrek games), it's always a little dicey when new games timed with Hollywood's release schedule show up for review. Scarier still, none of the major voice talent from the movie is in the game, and the developer, Luxoflux, is fresh off the success of True Crime: Streets of L.A. An odd concoction, but by sticking to the basics and polishing when necessary, the developers have gone from a bloody, mature rated game to a kid-friendly movie tie-in without too many hiccups.

I can recommend Shrek 2 enthusiastically to kids and novice gamers, and marginally to all other fans of the movie. But to true action game aficionados, the game will surely be too simplistic to be sufficiently rewarding or compelling. These gamers should look elsewhere.

An entire cast of characters is playable, and you'll always have four on the screen at any given moment, with one exception: "Hero Time." These events (there's usually one per level) use the special skills given to each playable character and place them in a short mini-game by themselves. For example, Puss In Boots can walk on tightropes, so his Hero Time is a small level with lots of that action. Lil' Red can throw apples, a requirement of her mini-game. Most of these games are fairly simple and can be beaten on the first try, so long as you're familiar with the standard conventions of platform games.

Dreamworks' Shrek 2 is a rare film for a couple reasons: it's a sequel that's arguably better than the original, it's a computer animated film not made by Pixar, and it appeals to children and adults alike. That's a pretty potent formula, as evidenced by the fact that it's the top grossing animated film of all time.

At the end of the day, at best, Shrek 2 only really has any merit in so far as it isn't quite as bad as some other games. Which is hardly much of a recommendation.

Few would deny that one of Shrek and its sequel's greatest successes on the big screen was managing to tell a basic child's story in such a way that it genuinely appealed to both children and adults. Sadly, the same is not true of the game developed by Luxoflux to tie in with the film's release. Although perfectly serviceable in many respects, sitting down with the nippers to play the game of Shrek 2 is going to be rather tedious for the rest of us.

When all is said and done, Shrek 2 is a better game than it could have been and is at least recommendable for young children, particularly the Xbox and Gamecube versions since they feature better graphics and built-in four-player support. Though the objectives are overly simple and quite repetitive, the game is well programmed with decent graphics and a solid pace, and the cooperative aspect should make for many lively slumber parties. Just don’t expect it to keep the grown-up ogres entertained for long.
