Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire

Add another feather to the caps of Meier and Reynolds; they haven’t lost the magic that makes their strategy games top-notch.

While many companies slap a bunch of new scenarios on a CD and call it a game extension, Alien Crossfire is something more. You won't find scenarios here, but numerous small changes to the original Alpha Centauri that make it a strategically more complex and exciting game.

Alien Crossfire macht Alpha Centauri noch etwas komplexer und abwechlungsreicher, vor allem aufgrund der beiden Alien-Fraktionen. Die neuen Technologien und Bauten fügen sich nahtlos ein; so gibt es endlich eine Gegenwehr gegen den »Jäger-Sucher-Algorithmus«. Die Außerirdischen sind meist so drückend überlegen, daß nur eine Allianz aller Menschen hilft. Trotzdem erhält Alien Crossfire als Addon nicht die 90er-Wertung des Hauptprogramms. Die Präsentation ist so, ähem, ausreichend wie eh und je. Nur die Aliens haben einige wenige neue Einheitengrafiken vorzuweisen. Außerdem vermisse ich Einzelszenarios, gerade für Mehrspieler-Partien. Doch wer Alpha mag, schlägt zu.

This game allows you to have fun and be absurd. This is important, really. Any game with only one or two ways to win becomes stale and boring after a while. Firaxis has done all it can to keep this game fresh, fun and challenging. If you liked SMAC, go get this add-on. If you loved Civ II or Call to Power get Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire. This expansion is worthy of the name Sid Meier, and that is the highest praise I can think of.

Wanneer je Alpha Centauri geen geweldige game vond, zal deze uitbreiding je mening volgens mij niet veranderen. Alien Crossfire is dus eigenlijk bedoeld voor de die-hard Alpha Centauri spelers die er geen genoeg van krijgen. Ik denk dat vele mensen zullen worden afgeschrikt door de amtige graphics en het feit dat het een turnbased spel is. En dat is jammer, want spellen met zo'n diepte en meeslependheid worden zelden meer gemaakt.

Kann man ein dermaßen komplexes und kompliziertes Spiel wie Alpha Centauri überhaupt noch vielschichtiger machen? Man kann! Alien Crossfire beweist auf eindrucksvolle Weise, dass monatelanger Spielspaß nicht unbedingt spektakuläre Grafik und Spezialeffekte voraussetzt.

Alpha Centauri wasn't quite the commercial success that Firaxis hoped for, but it did earn a loyal following. These fans looked past Alpha Centauri's similarity to Civilization II and reveled in its deep turn-based gameplay and strong premise: an interplanetary war for military, economic, cultural, and scientific dominance. But many others shied away from Alpha Centauri because both its alien factions and its technology were too unintuitive. Fortunately, Alpha Centauri's official expansion pack, Alien Crossfire, resolves at least one of those concerns.

Alien Crossfire ist trotz seiner kleinen Bugs ein Muss für jeden Alpha-Centauri-Fan. Die Betreuung der beiden auf Waffengewalt und Hochtechnologie spezialisierten Alien-Rassen macht Lust und die der Packung beiliegenden, vorbildlichen Handbücher und Karten Laune. Die mickrige Anzahl der neuen Technologie-Stufen und Einheiten dagegen hat mich schon etwas enttäuscht - und der mit rund 80 Mark fast schon unverschämte Preis erbost.

Alpha Centauri is the premier turn based strategy game for the Mac. The Alien Crossfire Expansion Pack adds to the mix by doubling faction choices, adds a civil war, and includes many enhancements. It requires the original Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri game and can only be purchased online for approximately $19.95 at the Aspyr store and other online retailers such as Interact. It's an excellent way to continue the Alpha Centauri experience.
