Without a doubt, hardcore Civilization fanatics will love Civ 5’s complex gameplay and fresh new mechanics and the addictive multiplayer will hook even the most casual gamers.
Civilization V is, once again, going to consume countless hours of my life in turn-based bliss. With the "boardgame" feel and the slick, polished features, I know I'm in for many sleep-deprived mornings. Fans of the series, or turn-based 4X games in general, will have a blast with this for a long time to come. And while it might be a little daunting to newcomers, Civilization V is also a great place for those who might want to wet their feet in the 4X pool.
Civilization V is one of the best strategy games I have ever played. There are some issues but those are so minor in comparison to all the great things Firaxis has done to not only make this accessible to new players but even returning players as well. I can say with great confidence that you will not get a better game of strategy right now then what Civilization V has to offer, it is just that good.
While some players may initially wish for an actual narrative, they will find that Civilization V allows the player to experience their own story. Every game will play out differently and events will stick with the player for some time. I will be coming back to Civilization V over and over again, and I will never regret adding this masterpiece to my strategy collection.
Between StarCraft II and Civilization V, it's been an interesting and exciting year for PC strategy games. Not to take away from either, but Civ V is, essentially, the anti-StarCraft, or at least as far as it can get while still occupying the same realm of strategy games. Either way, I cannot recommend Civ V enough to fans both old and new, or even people who hadn't considered playing a turn-based strategy game before. Which, I suppose, makes me the irresponsible one.

Civilization 5 is a fantastic turn-based strategy game, retaining the same addictive gameplay the first Civilization brought to PC gaming almost 20 years ago. In many ways, Civ V is the best representation of the series and certainly the most accessible for new and old players alike. Not all of the changes work or enhance the game, but most are a large improvement towards an even more playable entertainment experience. Between Starcraft 2 and Civilization 5, PC gaming is far from dead, folks!
So yes, Firaxis and I have had to end out relationship. Even though the changes in Civ V seem to be nominal, the impact they have on the game are massive. The more loosely defined religious and governmental structure to the non-stackable military units will redefine how the vets will approach this game. Most importantly, all the new adjustments continue to maintain and refine what is - in my opinion - the best turn-based franchise ever made. The addictive nature of Civilization continues to permeate throughout this fifth entry just as it always has, which is bad news for me. When my daughter asks for simple things such as food or clean clothes, she can only hear “just one more turn” so many times before revoking my quest for World Domination by way of a sledgehammer or a lawsuit.
It's very hard to describe a Civilization game in great detail without starting to ramble. If you take nothing else from this review, know that Civilization V is more inviting, fun, and engrossing than any lengthy description can truly convey. Not long after installing the game, I personally guarantee that you will be sucked into the world of Civ for hours at a time, regardless of what kind of genre you normally play. Civilization V is ultimate refinement of one of gaming's greatest franchises, and a shoo-in contender for game of the year.
Civilization V has, like the original game so many years ago, revolutionized the genre it represents. These innovations combine to make a game that both new players and old Civ veterans can get right into and enjoy from Turn 1. When combined with eye-popping graphics and one of the best instrumental soundtracks in gaming, everything comes together in one neat little package that could only have one label: Strategy Game of the Year.
Anyone who has read this far and is still reading should, most likely, buy a copy of Civ V; it's a good entry point, and it's a nice step for players of the series and the console version, alike. It seems to be "the best of both worlds," with more depth and more realistic presentation than can be had in Civilization Revolution, while being easier to approach with an easier to use User Interface than Civ IV. The only crowd I can't whole-heartedly recommend Civ V to (yet) are those who are all about the online multiplayer aspect of the game. For those people, I would suggest assuming a holding pattern and waiting for further reports.

Quel plaisir de débuter une nouvelle partie (que ce soit en ligne, qu'hors ligne, d'ailleurs), trouver l'endroit où établir les bases de tout un peuple, SON peuple. Une chose est sûre, on aimerait voir ce niveau de maîtrise de la part d'un studio de développement plus souvent et pour plusieurs raisons. D'abord, parce que ce soft est ultra-complet (18 personnages, des possibilités de victoires multiples, un wargame efficace, etc), mais aussi parce que depuis 1993 et le premier Civilization, le titre n'est ni meilleur, ou ni moins bon, il suit seulement son bonhomme de chemin dans l'élite du monde vidéoludique. Comme un bon vin, Civilization V se déguste passionnément, jusqu'à l'enivrement.

Civilization V is an awesome game and one of the best (if not the best) empire management games available. The story rejects a history lesson approach in favour of creating a game solely for entertainment, making the game vastly more enjoyable. The gameplay is very nearly spotless as the simplicity and interface design makes the most complex of tasks breathtakingly simple. There are a few elements that should have been done differently or improved upon but these are minor. The graphics and sound are amazing. The lifespan is almost unheard of in the gaming world. There are very few bad points I can raise about this game. It definitely feels like part of a series – you constantly feel as if this game has a past. Maybe, not an awful lot has changed or been added, just refined to near perfection. Consequently, fans of the long-running Civilization series may enjoy it more than newcomers. I still definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to experience one of Sid Meier’s legendary games.

Sure, I’m losing my job, divorcing the wife, and skipping my chemotherapy treatments, but I’m glad to see Civilization has still got it. As I read over my review, I’ve likely missed dozens of changes in this version (many of which I may not yet have seen myself) but that’s what Civilization is all about – layers. Every game I play, I see something new. Somehow where a lot of 4X games fail (I’m looking at you Master of Orion 3), Civilization keeps changing the game without losing the magic.
Civilization V makes huge advances to the series that do nothing but enhance the essential experience. Improvements to the user interface and AI at all levels result in it being more approachable for newcomers without losing any of the strategic depth that long-time fans crave. It vastly improves combat, making the micro-level gameplay both more complex and entertaining. It trims all the fat, leaving only decision-making, strategic planning, and the sheer joy of crushing your enemies. Civ V is the pinnacle of the franchise to date.

The bottom line is this: Civilization V keeps everything that makes the series great, makes the game more accessible to non-fans, and overhauls many of the finer gameplay details. Every PC gamer owes it to himself to give this game a shot.
If you like the Civilization series, stand up (or open up Steam and purchase it there), and run to your nearest software outlet to pick up this game. This is Civilization at its best and over time it will ripen like a fine wine and become a masterpiece. 2K Games have outdone themselves in making some massive changes without changing the core gameplay and alienating their fans. Now that I am finished with this review, I am jumping right back into the game and continuing my addiction…just one more turn!
As we've recently been reminded of, there's no such thing as moderation when it comes to Civ. Civilization V is a brilliant expression of the turn-based strategy game by the undisputed masters of the form. It's a great entry point for newcomers and veterans will delight in all the wrinkles and refinements. The exchange rate between real-life hours and in-game turns is not in your favor, but be prepared to surrender regardless.

Civilization V is an impressive addition to the series and without a doubt it meets the incredibly high standards we have come to expect from Firaxis. It's a title that carves out a space for the thinking gamer and provides ample space for the slower, more methodical approach to video gaming. Its masterful blend of high politics, international diplomacy, economics, technology, strategy and tactics is a must-have addition to the collections of any serious strategy fan. But above all else this title is its own. While its predecessor's still well loved, Civ V is not a mere clone of what came before. For the most hardcore Civ addicts out there, some of the changes may be a little unfamiliar. But Civ V retains the ethos of this iconic series, while modernising, simplifying and improving both its look and its feel. This series’ ability to turn a static turn-based, board-game-esque world into a microcosm of war and peace is unparalleled. And Civilization V is just the next jewel in its crown.

Das Spielgefühl ist mit den kleinen Missionen abwechslungsreicher und die zehn Sozialpolitiken erlauben eine bessere Spezialisierung meiner Strategie. Hinzu kommt endlich eine Entschlackung der Kriege, weil auf den neuen Hexfeldern eine wohltuende Einheitenbeschränkung gilt - so kann man sich ohne Stapelei auf Geländetaktik konzentrieren und jede einzelne Truppe gewinnt an Wert! Im oberflächlichen Zeitalter von Move, Kinect und Fuchtelfitness tut es unheimlich gut, wenn man mal wieder mit der Maus in der Hand und Hexfeldern vor Augen die Zeit vergisst. Wer Rundenstrategie liebt, wird auch diese Tochter von Sid Meier heiraten müssen.
There’s very little to fault here, and the main changes to the game are definitely for the better. Veterans of the series will re-discover the game’s magic while re-learning how to play and newcomers will find the deep gameplay tools and mechanics surprisingly inviting and easy to engage meaning Civilization V is actually a game of inclusion, not exclusion - easily the best Civilization yet.

On the whole, Civilization V is superb. Smooth, slick, nice UI, good graphics, strong new gameplay with some clean-up in the right old areas does not lose that fundamental ‘Civilization’ feel. Civ V is everything a great sequel should be. If you like Civ or turn-based strategy games, this one’s a must.
Overall, Civilization V continues with the simplistic rule-the-world gameplay that it is renowned for. I have played dozens of other turn-based strategy games, but the Civilization series continues to be the simplest and most enjoyable of all. The new features of the game all seem to work well and do so without making the experienced Civ gamer learn the rules again. I fear that another stint at CivAnon may be in order.
If nothing I said above makes any sense, it’s because Civilization V is such a complex game that it’s actually impossible to encompass in just a few words. The players won’t feel this complexity because the learning curve is very smooth and the sheer number of possible combinations for the scenarios makes it worth every cent.
The Civilization series needed a revolution of its own, and say what you will about it, Revolution was it. Now, Civilization V takes the best aspects from the long running series, and combines them with a more approachable interface to create what could be the best version of the franchise to date. Though it falls short of a masterpiece, even the most hardened players are sure to fall in love with the series all over again.

Les graphismes sont superbes, les nouveautés bien pensées, l’interface est splendide, le style est moins caricatural. Mais surtout, le jeu est toujours aussi captivant. Si Civ 5 n’est pas exempt de défauts et qu’on attend déjà avec impatience les ajours des futures extensions officielles, il a tout pour satisfaire les néophytes comme les vétérans. Bref, on en reprend encore pour trois ans, et on signe avec joie !
Despite my gripe with the animations in multiplayer, Civilization V is the perfect entry for the series’ debut in the current generation of gaming. I remain hopeful that Firaxis will someday allow me to watch in full detail as my glorious armies lay waste to my enemies’ lands.
Familiar, yet still refreshing, Civilization V is one of the best PC gaming experiences you can get. Just remember that it's likely to obliterate your social life, your relationships, and your work ethic. But then you’ll look up, realise it’s suddenly Tuesday, and you have a sweet beard. Silver lining!
For newcomers to the series, or those just recently initiated by Civilization Revolution, Civilization V marks a wonderful introduction into the robust, epic gameplay of the core series. To wily vets, the newest iteration may lack depth in the diplomacy and cultural tracts, but the additions of hexagons and advanced warfare should help to lessen the blow. Civilization V will more than likely have its weaknesses addressed by DLC and expansion packs (not to mention the vast modding community, which Civ V supports in some exciting new ways), but it is far from a paltry offering in its current state. This game has nearly everything you could ask for in a world conquest simulator, and if you plan to dive in it may be best if you let your loved ones know you are going to start writing a novel. Or training for a triathlon. Just pick something that takes a really long time and sounds hard. You’re going to be busy for a while.
Civ 5 has enough new features to present a minor learning curve even to seasoned veterans of the franchise, while presenting a dazzling number of ways to win. Yet, Firaxis has done a superb job keeping the bread and butter of Civilization in tact, and thus, maintaining the loyalty of its fans, and thousands of hours spent addicted to the game. Civilization 5 is easily one of the best games of the year, the franchise, and certainly warrants mention amongst the greatest strategy games ever.

Sid Meier's Civilization V is almost surprising in how much it differs from its predecessors. Longtime fans might view the new approach as less compelling due it initially appearing simplified, but I would say it's actually just streamlined and, as a result, more focused. Fortunately for them, the excellent Civilization IV and its mods handle the classic style nicely. For casual fans and newcomers, and even veterans wanting something a little different, Civilization V offers the same exhilarating experience of discovery and advancement, but now with a more tactical combat system and a less opaque design – making it the most inviting and engaging proper release to date. While there are some definite performance and AI issues that need to be addressed, there is also no denying that it is dangerously addictive and well worth your time.
The Firaxis team has proven that change is good when it's done right. Sid Meier's Civilization V takes core game assumptions that have persisted for as long as two decades and replaces them wholesale — almost invariably for the better. The results pull off the miracle of being both more accessible and deeper than before. Firaxis remains the undisputed king of the thinker's game among commercial developers, and Civilization V neatly fits as another jewel in its crown.

There’s only so much a developer can achieve by filtering out the white noise, boiling down the hard-to-understand elements and building in more shortcuts. Though it pains me to take issue with transparency and ease of use, Civilization could stand a little untidiness in the name of pushing envelopes. Firaxis has already done the whittling-down bit with Revolution, and to an extent Civ IV: time now for a shake-up. We’re often told that you can’t polish a turd, to pick an especially uncivil critical metaphor. Sounds about right – but past a certain point, you can’t polish a gemstone either. Still, none of that’s going to stop you losing sleep over the future of the German dye trade, or sketching out invasion plans on the bus to work, and once the AI’s charms begin to wane, there will be mods (the recently released tools look pretty substantial) and multiplayer rounds to fall back on. Highly refined and just a little faded, Civilization remains the classiest act in the “4X” marketplace.
Fans of Civ 4 might not be as happy with the gameplay changes and the performance issues. All I know is I kept coming back to Civ 4 again and again since it was released four years ago and I am happy with the changes Civilization 5 has presented. I am looking forward to losing track of time to the 'just one more turn' syndrome until the next version of Civilization becomes available.

De verbeteringen zijn geweldig en voelen aan alsof ze al jaren aanwezig zijn. Een must-buy voor de fans en de ideale manier voor nieuwkomers om nu eens eindelijk aan de slag te gaan met een goede turn based-game.

Sid Meier's Civilization V sucks hour after hour of your day away, giving rise to plans of global conquest and thoughtful tactics. Of course, you could say the same of Civ games of the past, but what makes Civilization V a praiseworthy successor is how it changes up key elements of the franchise. The game's core values--expansion, exploitation, exploration, extermination--are as strong as ever. But the newer tactical combat and addition of city-states give strategy veterans new ways of tackling their goals, while a friendly interface and expansive Civilopedia help newcomers get up to speed relatively quickly. There are a few aspects of Civilization V that could have used a bit more attention, but even as is, this is yet another classic edition to a series that consistently rewards and renovates. If you have even the remotest interest in worldwide domination, you owe it to yourself to get lost in one of the most rewarding turn-based games in years.
Liebe Leute von Firaxis, darf ich euch schlagen? Mal ehrlich: Was fällt euch ein, mit Civilization V ein derart hervorragendes Spiel abzuliefern? Wann bitte soll ich endlich mal wieder schlafen? Sicher, es gibt ein oder zwei Dinge aus den Vorgängern, die ich ein bisschen vermisse und die KI agiert zwar recht aggressiv, aber nicht unbedingt clever. Aber die Änderungen, die ins Spiel geflossen sind, machen den Titel zu einem echten Juwel: sei es die herausragende Bedienbarkeit oder der neue taktische Anspruch bei den Kämpfen. Das ist Sucht pur! Fängt man einmal eine Spielsitzung an, nimmt diese erst nach langen Stunden ein Ende. Möglicherweise auch, weil der gute Mensch vorm Bildschirm eingepennt ist und nun Tastenabdrücke seine Stirn zieren. Ich ziehe meinen Hut vor den Entwicklern, die es auch nach fast zwanzig Jahren noch schaffen, dass Civilization V eines der besten Strategiespiele auf dem Markt ist. Und jetzt Schluss mit schwafeln, ich muss eine neue Zivilisation aufbauen.
In all, the news with Civ V is just about all good. It's still not very accessible to non-grognards, and it's still fairly boring when it comes to multiplayer (turn-based games just involve too much waiting around for other people to finish up). But it's also still incredibly addictive, begging you to stay up just five minutes more, just to see what happens in the next turn. And the next turn. And the next.

It's a top game, overall; yet its true value won't be revealed until you've played it for 100 hours or so. It's only after three or four run-throughs with a new Civ that you really get a handle on how your decisions can pan out in the long-term. Lucky for us, its highly mod-able construction ensures that an abundance of tweaks, missions, and mods will gush forth from the community for years to come. Even though the nuts and bolts of development have passed to a new generation, this is undoubtedly the true successor to the Civ crown. Now, as always, Uncle Sid's games are magic.

In all honestly, it's really hard to fault Civilization V when it comes down to it, as the team at Firaxis just seem to know what they’re doing, and they do it really damn well. If anything, and this is being incredibly nitpicky, the game requires a lot of time to really get into and from time-to-time we feel the AI can be a little too aggressive, but these things are pretty much cosmetic (or personal; we hate Montezuma) in flaw. To put it really bluntly, Civilization V is just a really good, entertaining, addictive and highly polished game that only goes to show that Firaxis are masters of their craft and can somehow, with a bit of magic, evolve their franchise to even greater heights than before. Now back to killing Montezuma...
Keeping a franchise alive and kicking, not to mention fresh, after twenty years can't be easy. In many respects, these changes, this new 'direction' if you will actually isn't surprising. Would a "Civ IV plus whatever" game really have been just as good? We doubt it - Civ IV was Civ IV, and this is what it is, and it is glorious. With the likely hood of expansions, DLC and the mod tools on the horizon, we honestly can't wait to see what's in store for this game in the future. In the mean time, I think we'll just have one more turn...
I'm just skirting around the edges of Civ V, giving you a few insights into the way I play and some of the things I've come across in the past couple of weeks. You'll get something different out of it. Everybody will – the random elements involved in generating a map ensures that each game will always have its own flavour, bringing various permutations of events and squabbles to the mix. I can only show you bits and pieces from my time with it, while trying to illuminate a set of catch-all differences that run through the game as a whole. But, really, it's those individual moments that make it so special, and you'll have to get those by playing it yourself. Who knows, maybe Catherine won't always be such a pain in the arse to you. She probably will, though.
There really is very little to find fault with. Well, OK, perhaps the performance could be a bit better, especially when in the latter stages and maybe there should be more content in the modern/future eras. And, perhaps, more risks and radical changes should have been made, but then again, if it ain't broke etc. In the end, it's an absolutely storming classic strategy game, one that'll eat your social life once again. Civilization V is one of the best turn-based strategy games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. Whether teaming up with my friends for some multiplayer, or simply losing a whole night of sleep to the game’s endlessly replayable single player, this is one game that any strategy enthusiast, or, hell anyone strat-curious should check out. Sure, I miss some of the deeper inter-civilization relations that the more defined religion and government setup brought in Civilization IV, but that’s nothing anyone new to the series will even think twice about. With all the tips, advisers and tools in place, this is the first Civilization for PC that I feel is worth just about every person’s time. Go forth and create, subdue, and exploit. Do as Firaxis has done, and bring Civilization to the masses.
Civilization V brought me back to the series with that 'just one more turn' feeling that I haven't felt since I played Civilization II. Even though it has its share of problems and rough spots, especially compared to the state of Civilization IV after years of patches and expansion packs, it keeps bringing me back for more, and I could hardly tear myself away to compose this review. Even for hardcore Civilization IV players, the game is different enough to warrant a purchase for anyone looking for something new. Civilization V took a whole lot of risks, and nearly all of them paid off. I just can't wait to get back to helping Alexander the Great rule the world.

Fans von Rundenstrategie-Spielen werden für eine lange Zeit keinen anderen Titel mehr benötigen und im fünften Spross von Sid Meiers berühmter Serie versinken, um ihre Zivilisationen zu gründen und durch die Epochen voranzutreiben. Und trotzdem hätte ich mir mehr gewünscht. Mehr Abwechslung und grundlegende Neuerungen, die das Spiel über das nun schon seit 19 Jahren bekannte Schema hinaus erweitern. Civilization 5 ist Civilization. Egal, ob beispielsweise das Politksystem neu oder man jetzt auf Hexfeldern unterwegs ist. Hier hätten die Entwickler einfach ein bisschen mehr Mut für Neues beweisen können und wären es nur wechselnde Jahreszeiten oder rollenspielartige Missionen gewesen, durch die Anführer vielleicht neue Fähigkeiten hätten erwerben können. Ansonsten kann man dem Spiel nicht viel vorwerfen.

Civilization V is a very good game. It mixes the old and new very well in an effort to propel the Civilization franchise to new heights. Some may like the changes, while the diehard Civilization will probably hate Civilization V's guts. The recommended system requirements are opposite to the game's more simplified and streamlined approach. Steam can be a deal breaker for some. All-in-all, Civilization V is the most mature presentation of any Civilization game to date and it does not sacrifice the core game experience to appeal to a greater audience. I do hope that games like Civilization V and Starcraft II are in fact marking the resurgence of PC gaming.

Casualisierung!« befürchtet, der sei beruhigt: Civ 5 ist immer noch ein komplexes Spiel, in den Kämpfen sogar taktischer als je zuvor, und es ist ohne Zweifel ein reinrassiges Civilization. Für mich hat der fünfte Serienteil sogar mehr Daseinsberechtigung als der vierte. Das hier ist eine neue, spannende, schöne Variante von Civilization, ein Kind unserer Zeit: geradliniger, polierter und, in diesen für den PC kommerziell schweren Zeiten, mit weniger Aufwand produziert. Das ist das einzig wirklich Bedauernswerte.
Just like Total War, it’s impossible to make it all perfect when there are so many options involved, with so many nations on the same map. So, because what problems I encountered weren’t that big, I was able to put them aside. And for those who want realism, control and micromanagement, there are MODs which will surely be created by the community, whether it’s only maps or even gameplay changes and customized campaigns. So don’t go running, because Civilization V has its iron fist well hidden inside a fine velvet glove. From beginners to veterans, each will feel at ease remodelling the world’s civilizations.

I wasn’t sure going into this exactly how family friendly Civilization V was going to be. I was pleased to find that the developers chose to exercise tact and focus on quality gameplay instead of explicit scenes of violence. The game’s Everyone 10+ rating is very appropriate in my opinion and parents should feel confident that even though this is a war game, it is not likely that you will find a less violent war game. The passages from the Bible are a nice touch as well as other inspirational quotes from various historical figures. I did not encounter any quotes or passages pertaining to other religions during the time I played the game, but it stands to reason that there may be other religions represented as well. The game has a way of stealing time away from you, so I would again caution players not to allow themselves to get addicted to or overly wrapped up in their quest for world domination.
Civ V's modern graphics and substantial production values make it the new series standard by default. For the most part its gameplay tweaks feel natural, a refresh of the core Civilization gameplay. After twenty years, there is still something very addictive about clicking “next turn.” For a gamer, Civilization is a standard, an essential. It’s like having a Monopoly set, you never know when you’ll want play, and it’s just a fun thing to have around the house. V’s introduction of broad Social Policies, and failure to evolve its multiplayer, will undoubtedly have some fanatics sticking with their copy of IV, but less opinionated players will be satisfied. Whether to unleash your inner fascist or ambassador, there’s never been a better time take the reins of a civilization.
Civilization 5 is quite similar to being in a relationship. At first - when everything is new - you are full of questions. Soon, you get used to the quirks and feel like you can really begin to get beneath what’s on the surface. When you aren’t playing, you are thinking about playing. You make a couple mistakes and have to fight some other guys off, but your quick thinking pays off. Somewhere, near the end of the game, you look back on what you did early on, swearing you’ll never make those mistakes again. Eventually, win or lose, you want to play again.
Civilization, qui faisait jusque-là autorité dans le domaine de la gestion et de la stratégie, vient de gagner ses galons de wargame à l'occasion de ce cinquième volet. L'adoption d'une grille hexagonale et l'impossibilité d'empiler les unités militaires – une véritable révolution dans la série – décuplent littéralement la dimension tactique des combats. Les autres nouveautés s'avèrent moins convaincantes : entre un système de doctrines sociales assez superficiel et des Cités-Etats qui ont tendance à verrouiller les relations diplomatiques, tout n'est pas rose. La vraie question, c'est de savoir si Civilization V est à même de séduire les vétérans. Si on peut regretter la disparition de certaines fonctionnalités, il suffit de regarder en arrière et de considérer Civilization II, qui reste le meilleur épisode de la série, pour comprendre que le plaisir de jeu n'est pas forcément proportionnel à la complexité croissante du gameplay.
Ultimately it’s a very enjoyable game. If you’ve never played Civ before, go for it. If you loved Civ 4, there will be things in Civ that will impress, but a few dumbed-down changes that may annoy. But hey, that’s why God invented Updates.
There’s only a few definites in this world: life is short, taxes are a pain in the ass and Sid Meier makes beautiful strategy games. That’s right, mark Civilization V down in the success column as Firaxis Games has delivered another stellar product that is among the year’s best. Overwhelming with an insane amount of depth, Civilization V offers enough replay value to fill at least 3-4 strategy games. Intelligent, surprisingly engaging, and ever-inviting, Civilization V is user-friendly and should bring forth a slew of new fans that have never experienced the brilliance of one of the best turn-based strategy series in the history of the video game industry.
All in all, I was very impressed by the game. The game can be very slow, and a standard game can take you days to finish. The only real factors that made me frown were the constant game crashes at first, and the simplified feeling compared to Civilization IV. I can recommend this game to any casual gamers that like strategy games and have a bit of patience. Civilization V is very addictive. One of the best turn-based strategy games out there.
A great step forward in streamlining and modernizing Civilization and a lot more forgiving for newbies, yet ultimately shipped with a long laundry list of problems and balance issues, not to mention completely incompetent AI. A flawed classic in need of some serious patching.
So what is our final verdict on Civilization V? Well, it's got quite a lot of improvements over version IV, a buttload of small tweaks that make the gameplay experience better and some additions like the city states that add some additional flair. Still we don't want to give Civilization V a near perfect score as it's near from perfect. Most of the bugs have disappeared with the first patch, but the system specs are overly high, the AI of other empires is still quite bad, and not all the changes made are for the better. Still, all in all Civilization V will keep you pressing the "next turn" button until it's way past midnight and you wonder why it suddenly has become so dark. Addictive like hell, just as always!

Firaxis had a goal in mind with Civilization V. They took the classic feel of the series and added completely new and interesting features to challenge the hardened fan base. People balked at the idea of City-States and a hex-based world instead of the tried and true squares when they were introduced. The good news is that the final product is in fact a worthy civilization game for all to enjoy, for those new to the series and those of us who play turns in our sleep after we close the game. It’s a wonderful experience and you’ll lose sleep over it, whether you like it or not! You can always save and quit on the next turn…

Civilization 5 remains a threat to my productivity and household happiness. Though not quite the complete triumph it could be, Firaxis has shown how a twenty year old design can still be tweaked and improved in the hands of a team unafraid to break things in the interest of progress. If the computer opponents can just learn to keep their heads about them when you are losing yours, there will be many late nights ahead for all of us.
If you haven't bought it yet, don't. Save yourself. Run. It's been nine days since I started this review. Sometimes I make an edit, sometimes I write while having Civ 5 running in the background, and after a few words I go back for a few more turns. I think it was my dad's birthday or something last week, I had to go out for dinner and thank God Montezuma didn't pull a fast one because after a day of him and Alexander pissing on each other's carpets I was ready to rebase my Atomic bombs to a serious place of contention. I'm definitely going to shower tomorrow, and not stay up until 6 A.M. tonight. I'm gonna close Civ 5 after finishing this review. I promise. The only way I think I've made it this far is thanks to Civ 5 crashing on me occasionally putting me off from playing it for a while until I want to go back and give it another shot. I'll be truly screwed when Firaxis starts patching the game up, which is really holding it back from what it could be in a fully fleshed out form.

And so its a game that inherits many of its flaws, none of which when taken in isolation do anything to mar the experience. The game’s biggest success is retaining almost all of the depth of previous games and presenting it to players in such a streamlined and effective manner. It’s deceptively simple at a glance, but play on – and you will – and you’ll soon be sucked in to its turn-by-turn charms, carefully balancing the needs of your people with the overwhelming urge to go and bash the civ next-door. And then, glaring unblinkingly at the screen, you realise it’s 7pm.
On the whole I am pretty pleased with Civilization 5. In some ways it’s a simpler version of the previous games, but there are enough new ideas and changes to keep it both fresh and familiar at the same time. Hardcore Civ fans will probably not like some of the changes, but on the whole it feels cleaner and simpler, with much of the old depth still there, if not so obviously. It reminds me of seeing an old drinking friend who’s just had some new clothes and a haircut after spending time abroad – recognisable, new, interesting , but you wake up 2 days later wondering just what the hell happened to Friday and Saturday. And then you start all over again.
In all, Civ V gets just about everything right, again. It takes some admirable chances on major gameplay changes, and while it doesn't always succeed, it's also completely open for modding and tweaking by fans -- so what isn't perfect out-of-the-box is up for fixin' down the line. It may be intimidating, or it may be the kind of game you never quite got around to digging into, but if you have any sort of soul for strategy, you oughtn't let Civilization V become just another name you drop at parties.
Despite it being such an astoundingly slick, engaging game, for all the hours it eats up, outside of its multiplayer it gives disappointingly little back, and it will continue to give very little back until Firaxis bites the bullet and admits that there are aspects of Civilization which deserve not just to be improved, but fixed.
There is no doubting that Civilization V is a deep, complex game, ruthlessly addictive, and polished beyond any prior installment in the series. It’s so difficult to stop yourself from playing just another few turns, then just another few more. And the interface, massively polished as it has been, makes doing so easier than ever before. Switch to and from it, and the game just about holds up for long stretches of time. But despite being mildly addicted to it over the past few days, not once have I felt truly gripped, properly taken in, by Civilization V. Elegantly constructed, and absolutely beautiful, it’s nevertheless lacking a certain something: a certain spark, a speck of real character, and - frankly - just a little bit of soul.
It’s two steps forward and one step backward for this series. The graphics are better, the hexagonal tiles make sense, and the social policy system is vastly improved. But the long build times, frustrating battle mechanic (how my armored tanks can ever get defeated by archers I’ll never know), and lack of true innovation is frustrating. For such an epic, engrossing, and altogether peerless series, it’s strange that the developers keep reconfiguring the formula only to expose new flaws in the game. Personally, I think the franchise fails to be as ambitious as it once was: why not bring back the espionage ability from Beyond the Sword or give us new ways to engage other civilizations or imagine new technologies for us to research? Civilization V is a game about evolving your society to become the best. The developers need to find more inspiration from their source material.
Civilization V is certainly a fun game, but it seriously lacks the addictive quality of Civ4. Yes, I still click “next turn” plenty, but I do so out of boredom, hoping the next turn will be more interesting… and I’m starting to regret taking Civ4 off the hard drive for this. Granted, the version of Civ4 I played had multiple expansions, and in time I hope CivV gets “expanded” to be as fun and addictive as the games that have come before it.
In many ways, Civilization V is an admirable game, bolder and sexier than the average strategy game, and sporting some nice innovations that will make it hard to go back to Civilization IV. But in other ways, it's a disappointment that needs a lot more work before it earns its place as the successor to Civilization IV.
