There’s no doubt in my mind that both golf and strategy fans will eat this game up. The presentation is second to none, the gameplay is addictive without being overbearing, and Sid Meier’s signature “I can’t-wait-to-see-what-happens-next” magic is here in full force. I hope the golf theme won’t turn anyone off, as they’ll be missing an amazing gaming experience.
The only thing holding this title back is the sometimes-sketchy graphical integrity and a few other minor bugs that will probably be fixed when the game is patched for the first time. Other than that, Sid Meier’s Sim Golf is a masterfully crafted piece of work that will likely spawn some intriguing expansion packs. Matt says this game will be bigger than Mario Sunshine when it comes out, but I think he’s insane. It’s Mario, Matt! Nothing sells better than Mario – not even Super Dodge Ball Advance.
The golf game is fairly basic, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun. Through time, your golfer’s abilities will improve, and if you are lucky, you’ll rack up the best score for the course. I can’t even begin to tell you how deep the simulation aspect is. Along with the plethora of options, the menus are easy to navigate – a blind monkey could do it. Simply said, this is a must-have for golf fans.
Game Over Online (Feb 11, 2002)
The design in this game is nothing short of an exercise of a craft, perfected by two of the most innovative and creative visionaries in the industry. It does not deviate much from the status quo but does so much to extend what has already been laid out (and in most cases by the two famed designers themselves). Surely there are flaws but they do not obfuscate the fun when we consider the entire corpus. I sincerely hope it demonstrates to the millions of me-too tycoon and Theme Park clones that this is, ex cathedra, how one of those games should be. Emphasis on humorous sarcasm and subtle but in-depth design kicks EA's 2002 off with another stellar release.

SimGolf is an incredibly fun game, despite what may seem like a long list of shortcomings. In fact, it's such an enjoyable game that you probably won't think about most of its problems until long after you've finished playing a session. Which means that you probably won't be thinking about SimGolf's problems for a long, long time. Though the idea of a game about designing golf courses might not seem like much, SimGolf is actually a terrific idea. It streamlines the sport of golf so that you don't have to deal with any of it except the good stuff: hitting the ball and sinking shots. SimGolf's building and design elements are easy to use and surprisingly open-ended. And playing as both a golfer and a course designer simultaneously is so distinctively enjoyable that it's difficult to even take notice of any of the game's problems other than its bugs. Because aside from its problems, SimGolf is colorful, fun, funny, and addictive, and it can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

This is a joyful program, capable of leaving golfers with the feeling of finally being in charge on a golf course. The civilization aspects are nicely represented, and players are sure to walk away with a sense of what it takes to create and maintain a course, as well as turning a profit. This game is definitely a sub-par round (which is a good thing in golf terms) in the world of golf. This is an option-rich environment that will appeal to golf fans and business/civ fans alike.
ActionTrip (Feb 15, 2002)
Beside all these appealing elements, the game also has a number of flaws which simply shouldn't have happened. For instance the graphics are displayed at 800x600 and the resolution cannot be changed. This is OK for low end computers, but players with bigger monitors will want to get a better resolution. The characters are way too small and poorly drawn and animated. The great in-game music will rarely be activated, as the sound is focused on the annoying player comments and sound effects. SimGolf will undoubtedly attract all the Sims' as well as golf fans, as it offers a new approach to this interesting sport.

SimGolf is easy to get into but readily flexes around your growth curve, meaning as you get better and set tougher goals for yourself, it accommodates you. By putting players in a position to compete with their own best efforts, SimGolf becomes almost infinitely replayable. The fact that its gameplay fits snugly into the difficult to achieve “simple-but-deep” category practically qualifies SimGolf as a barbiturate along the lines of Tetris. Its sound game design also makes it enjoyable by gamers who aren’t golf fans. SimGolf offers a deep strategy experience for those who can sit at their computer for hours on end, while it will also please players who just want to sit for an hour and build a winning golf resort. If you fancy yourself a strategist at any level, playing has its rewards. See you on the links!

In spite of a major bug and some minor issues, SimGolf provides the kind of gameplay that hooks you and won't let go.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sid Meier's Sim Golf. I give Sim Golf 4 out of 5 GiN gems. The overall game play is fun and entertaining. There is a "sandbox" mode for those players who want to design a world class country club without the stress of raising the capital to do so. If you are a fan of the other "sim"and "tycoon" type games, you will love Sid Meier's Sim Golf.

PC Gamer (Mar, 2002)
SimGolf isn’t going to rank among Sid Meier’s great games, but for just about any other developer, this game would be a respectable and fun addition to the tycoon genre.

Operation Sports (Feb 10, 2002)
To conclude, SimGolf is a fun golf course simulator. While not revolutionary as other "Sim" games it does a great job of what it is supposed to do. My complaints with the game are the same I have with all Sim games, once you experience it, the only thing bringing you back is the sheer fun of designing golf courses. Bottom line, this game is a fun experience, and one that really should be had by anyone that loves golf, golf design or Sim game lovers.
Gameplanet (Feb 17, 2002)
Overall, though, there is plenty in Sim Golf to keep most gamers satisfied. There are different difficulty settings, from Easy where balancing the books won't be a problem, through progressively harder settings where money gets tight. There is also a 'Sand Box' mode where you get to free-build with no cash limitations.
GameStar (Germany) (Feb, 2002)
