Silent Hill 3.

Sure, the Horror genre of videogames really started with the Resident Evil series. But it was a little title called Silent Hill that really took it to a new level. Silent Hill contained themes that were more akin to the wonderfully weird film, Jacob's Ladder, or any number of David Lynch films, than to the simple "jump out and say boo" type of scare you get from Resident Evil. Across three games, the series hasn't become dilluted or lost an ounce of the impact that started with the original.

PlayStation 2Just Adventure
Finally, the Silent Hill series desperately needed to manifest a recurring character readily identifiable with the series and the town much like Clive Barker has done with Pinhead and the Cenobites. Too many of Silent Hill’s oddities are misshapen blobs of pulsating flesh with no purpose other than to gross out the player. Now I don’t want to give away any of the plot, but if there is another entry, there are finally some memorable monstrosities whose return would be most welcome and provide the series an evil focal point around which to rally.

Being a huge fan of SH2 myself, I was always a bit worried about the approach Team Silent seemed to take Silent Hill 3 in. After playing through the full game, I can only certify to some of my concerns, as well as breath a sign of relief that the game has still got a lot of depth to it. After SH2, the story in this doesn't feel nearly as crafty and bold. By going back to the roots of SH1, Team Silent also managed to alienate those who aren't nearly as excited by plots dealing with religious cults and mysterious identities. The pacing of the game is also done in a strangely haphazard manner. After making it through the mall, you're basically on a strictly linear route with absolutely no story events for a good while. Despite all of this, Silent Hill 3 remains a fantastic experience for both newcomers to the series as well as longtime fans.

Yes, the nigh-eternal foibles of cinematic horror games are still here, scattered about, but the product as a whole is still one of the best things going in horror gaming. Really superstitious and/or ADD-afflicted types might want to steer clear for their own special reasons. Everybody else with a reasonably high-end gaming rig, the residents of Silent Hill welcome you.

If you thought it was grim up North, you should try paying Silent Hill a visit. Fog, mutant dogs, slime, axe-wielding nurses and deranged paedophiles are just a few of the delights that will greet the unsuspecting traveller. For some strange reason, every psycho loser seems to end up going there at some point or other, and Silent Hill 3's lead character Heather (who looks spookily like the sister of James Sutherland, Silent Hill 2's lead) is no exception.

A girl, a town, fluffy bunny rabbits covered in blood, and the best recurring nightmare in gaming. Gather ?round, all ye masochists, and hear tell of Silent Hill 3, the tale of a teenage girl who wanders into the mall one day and winds up vomiting out religion in the wake of coagulated, vibrating, lumpy dog-man cadavers. This game is sick, ultraviolent, blasphemous, nasty, and filled with things that people were too afraid to create words for. Just the way a horror game should be.

Have you ever walked out of a particularly good horror flick only to discover that your muscles ache because you've been tensing them up in anticipation of the next terrifying event?

Silent Hill 3 is like that.

While Capcom's Resident Evil games rely on the "BOO!" factor to unnerve the player Konami's Silent Hills are far more cerebral. Slithering inside our brains and screwing with our minds, their horrors find a nice and comfortable spot inside our skulls and insist that they're going to be with us not only throughout the entire adventure but long after the game's been completed. Konami's latest, Silent Hill 3, is a unique interactive experience that is a must have for horror fans or for those looking for a great scare, and it's the newest reason why I won't go into my basement alone.

In the late 1990s when survival horror games hit their zenith, the equal blend of horrific stories, creative monsters and a newly imbued cinematic flair gave gamers a new thrill -- A chilling, occasionally shocking scare. While Capcom's Resident Evil provided shock and suspense, Konami's Silent Hill provided an eerie, surreal and disturbing sense of fright, one designed in the H.P. Lovecraftian style rather than in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein fashion.

The best-selling PlayStation 2 survival/horror series has returned. Silent Hill 3 has crept its way onto store shelves and is ready to keep gamers running around in the dark for hours. With a new cast of characters, new monsters, new weapons and new areas to explore, Silent Hill 3 is everything diehard SH2 fans have been waiting for.

Back in 1999, Konami unleashed Silent Hill, its first entry into the survival horror genre. But rather than ape the shock-based thrills popularized by Capcom's Resident Evil series, Konami went for a darker, creepier feel in everything from the game's environments, to the monsters, to the story itself. The resulting game offered its own fair share of shocks, as well as some genuinely fearful, emotional, and disturbing moments. What began as a game with something of a cult following has ballooned into a strong franchise, giving the new Silent Hill 3 some big shoes to fill. The good news is that this latest installment lives up to the series' high standards and is especially well suited to those who've enjoyed the previous Silent Hill games.

Silent Hill was my introductory game to the whole survivor horror genre. This was back when I thought Resident Evil was when my grandparents came over and took over my room for a month, and I genuinely thought Silent Hill was a sniper game. So, my expectations were more than met when the game turned out to be an ordinary Joe fighting off the minions of Hell instead of some boring game about sitting in bushes and shooting guys a long way off. I enjoyed the very plastic off the casing of the game. When the second game came out, I was stoked. While it had the same gameplay elements and took place in Silent Hill, it just didn’t feel right. It didn’t tie in with the original events at all.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
Silent Hill 3 weaves an unnerving web of psychological horror that is illustrated with some of the most grotesque and sadistic visuals seen in any game, television show, or motion picture. Just the thought of a woman eating a fetus is disturbing as is, but in the world of Silent Hill 3, it’s an ordinary everyday occurrence and something that you’ll have to stomach continually during play. Nerves of steel and the ability to accept the most shocking of content are an absolute necessity if you dare venture into this ghastly game.

Overall, SH3 doesn’t really add anything in the series that would be considered revolutionary or new, but since we all remember the potential rioting after Coke went to it’s new formula back in the 80’s, it just goes to prove that sticking with the original can be your better idea and can cause less issues (and bad review scores for that matter). If you’re a fan of the series and looking for a new terrifying installment, then look no further. Great story, cool new character, and all the dark, evil, and grotesque monsters and environments that you’ve come to know and love all together again for your PC gaming enjoyment. Happy gaming … and pleasant dreams.

Whether you love it or hate it, the quirky genre known as "survival-horror" is here to stay. Starting as far back as Infogrames' Alone in the Dark series on the PC, the genre allows a large portion of like-minded gamers to scare themselves half to death. For my money, Konami's excellent Silent Hill series epitomizes the very best in shock value, terror, and those creeping feelings of dread that we all sometimes crave. The latest addition in the series comes in the form of Silent Hill 3, and while the game does little to radically change the successful formula, it once again succeeds in crafting a sinister but cruelly gorgeous video-game experience.

Silent Hill 3's awkward story suffers from some serious pacing problems, as all the interesting stuff is saved for near the end. The combat and puzzles could have been better, too. The game doesn't even have that many true scares in it, but if you want to lose yourself in a really disturbing world that really digs under your skin, Silent Hill 3 is hard to beat.

PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic
In terms of creature design, Konami went a little overboard this time. Most of these shambling freaks look like misshapen hunks of raw meat, although their ear-splitting screams do make them more frightening. The human models are nicely rendered with amazing lifelike faces. On the downside, the dialogue is uneven in quality and the voice acting often sounds stilted. But my main issue with Silent Hill 3 is the clumsy camera. Not only is it hard to see where you're heading, but it's often hard to keep the monsters you fight in view. A shoulder button lets you center the camera behind you, but the transition is slow and disorienting. Regardless, Silent Hill 3 is a great looking game that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

In one sense SH3 is another fine slice of demented survival horror. But in another it's an unambitious update that retains the core features of the franchise without stamping its own mark on the series. We loved Silent Hill 2, despite its obvious console roots and gameplay limitations. But what's really scary is that if the next installment doesn't show a lot more innovation, its review scores will likely be truly horrifying.

WindowsPC Gameplay (Benelux)

PlayStation 2Gamesdog
Overall, Silent Hill 3 and horror is one of those things that you either like, or don't. I find the horror genre a little too much horror and not enough game and in the long run, really quite tedious. The fact that this is the third game in the series says that there must be a legion of fans out there to keep it going. Not a game for everyone, but if you are looking for something different, it is a very accomplished offering.

PlayStation 2Press Start Online
It’s somewhat fitting that in the early stages of the game Heather finds herself on a rollercoaster track as, much like the fairground ride, Silent Hill 3 reaches dizzying emotional peaks, and navigates harsh twists and turns throughout its course. It’s something of a shame, therefore, that the thrills are broken by its dull and stuffy middle - as though seeking to catch its breath from the white knuckle ride that sandwiches it. Ultimately, by setting the bar too high from the outset, Silent Hill 3 stumbles and falls victim to its own relentless ambition half-way through, but not before a gripping final stretch that reminds us why we played the Playstation original in the first place.

PlayStation 2Ferrago Ltd. (play.tm)
Disappointingly uninspired as it is, Silent Hill 3 is entertaining for a while, and you're likely to want to keep playing to see how the game is tied into the events of previous titles. But while that's enough to make the game worth renting, it doesn't have the necessary replayability or appeal to make it a must-buy outright. Maybe Silent Hill 4 will be a return to form, but sadly Silent Hill 3 is a game with limited shelf life and quite a mundane story.

WindowsActionTrip
In a nutshell, it might not be a good idea for players to spend their money on this one, especially if they expected radical innovations in the genre. Although the game does show some improvements, which include better graphics, excellent sounds, and an action-packed gameplay with a sample of new weapons to try out. Truehearted Silent Hill fans should probably stick to playing the console version. But even then I'm not sure if they will be pleased with some of the changes made by Konami. Also, I'm afraid that once you're done with the game, you won't find any reason to come back to it. And, need I remind you that Silent Hill 2 failed to deliver a truly lasting horror experience on the PC. To our disappointment Silent Hill 3 doesn't expand on that aspect any further.

PlayStation 2Games TM
Despite the high frustration level, it's hard not to be impressed with Silent Hill 3. Annoyances aside, there's a mysterious allure to the game that keeps you playing. The plot is as confusing as ever and asks three questions for every one it answers, yet the infrequent interaction you get between Heather and the few other people left in town is enough to maintain interest between puzzles and freaks.
